Quick Tip
Max from Virginia writes:
When Microsoft ends support for Windows XP, will antivirus and firewall programs such as Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes remain effective so us faithful XP users can still feel safe?
Your programs won't stop working. But, there's a very big catch. There will be no more security updates from Microsoft. So there will be no fixes for new threats. Third-party security services are saying they cannot promise to keep XP safe after Microsoft stops supplying updates.

This will make XP systems a prime target for hackers. You could choose to stay off the Internet entirely (no web surfing and no e-mail) and not add any new files to your computer, just in case they've been infected. But that's really not practical.
XP faithful shouldn't feel safe with their systems. Extended support ends for XP on April 8, 2014.

Computers 101
LaDonna writes:
I've had my Win 8 computer for about 9 months. After the first month window tiles stopped working so I re-installed Win 8. The tiles have stopped working again. How can I fix without re-installing Win 8. The only tile that works is the desktop.
I have two suggestions for you to try. The first one is pretty simple. Windows 8 apps do not update automatically, even if you have your Windows updates set to happen automatically. Some users on the Microsoft forums have been able to take care of the tile issue simply by updating their apps.
Go to your Start Screen.

Select the Windows Store app tile.

If that tile doesn't work, pull up the Search Charm and choose the Store icon there.

Then look to the far right of the Store page.

If there are updates available, you'll see them listed there. Tap or click on Update

You'll be taken to a list of available updates.

At the bottom of the page, choose the apps you want and select Install.

If that doesn't work, there may be a problem with your user account in Windows. Go to the Search Charm and type in "create an account."

Select the Create Account icon.

You'll see the option to Activate a guest account.

Turn it on and see if your tiles function with that account. If that's the case, try creating a new user account.

Hopefully one of these solutions takes care of the issue.

On The Move
Brian from Vermont asks:
I went to message a friend on Facebook the other day, and all it would come up with was a chat window! What gives? I'm not even logged into Facebook chat, and I'm really missing the standard Facebook conversation window I've always used in the past. Help a dude out!!

Yeah, that's a frustrating one, Brian, and it's happened to me in the past, too. Sometimes, for some odd reason, Facebook decides to use a chat window for a regular old message instead of the tried-and-true conversation window, but thankfully it's pretty easy to get back to the way things used to be.

Hibernation In Vista And Windows 7
You may already know that Windows has a useful "Hibernate" option along with Shutdown, Restart and the Sleep mode. The Hibernate feature is especially useful when you want to save the current state of your operating system and do not want to restart, or shut down the computer.
For example, suppose you are working with a lot of open applications or documents, and have to leave your desk for a couple of hours. It would be helpful if you could save the current state of Windows and resume your work from the same point, when you come back later. When you wake up Windows from the hibernate state, you can start working from the last used state and will not have to open the same programs or documents you were working on earlier.

Windows will save the state of all the open applications, program windows and running processes to your computer's hard drive as a hibernation file. When the computer is powered on, all the contents are reloaded from the hibernation file and Windows does not boot from scratch.

Here's how to enable hibernate mode in Windows 7

Steve's Master List Makes Photo Trips Easier
Ever leave for a photo trip feeling like you've forgotten something? I've got some tips that will make that problem a thing of the past.

Of course, you'll need to pack your photography gear. But what about all the non-photography items that you'll need to take along with you? Instead of a photo tip this week, I'd like to share one of the tools I use to prepare for my photo trips.
About five years ago, I put together a master list that I use every time I take a trip. And let me tell you, it's made traveling a lot easier.

Amanda's Coolsite
Tom Eckert Art
A reader shared this site with me and after seeing Tom Eckert's sculpture, I knew I had to share it with you guys!
On the main page you'll learn all about the materials used and Eckert's art process. At the top of the main page you'll find navigation options: Tom Eckert, Galleries, Biography, and Contact.
Tom Eckert takes you to the main page.
Galleries – here you'll find the galleries filled with Eckert's sculpture. There are four galleries in total: Recent Work, Image Gallery 1, Image Gallery 2, and Image Gallery 3. Each displays how many images of art in the gallery beneath its title. My favorite pieces are where Eckert has manipulated wood and then painted it to make it look like cloth. It's just amazing!
Biography – here you can learn all about the artist.
While normally you might ignore a Contact page, I suggest you don't on this site there are four really cool images on that page worth seeing. As well as link to this video and other places around the web where Eckert's work is or he talks about his process. Seriously go watch the video.
What an amazing wood sculptor, you have to his work for yourself – so go check it out!

Autumn Magic At Bond Falls
You know, I'm starting to really like Bond Falls. It's located - more or less - in the north central area of Michigan's UP, and let me tell ya - I've been there twice and pulled out a good shot each time! The first time was of the main falls, this time I went for the upper falls. In fact, back when I took the main falls I just couldn't help but think this area could really be fantastic if the timing was right in autumn. So, about 13 months later I came back…(More)
Whitetail Through The Window
This Whitetail Deer Buck was photographed in Custer State Park, SD just as the colors were starting to turn. It was early morning and we were the first (and probably only) car on the Wildlife Loop Road. In fact, I think we were a little too early - hadn't seen much - then we spotted this guy. One look at that amazing rack was all it took for me... (More)
Incoming!
This was captured at the Bosque Del Apache NWR one chilly evening as the snow geese were settling in for the night. The sun was getting pretty low in the sky and the temps were dropping rapidly. I knew I didn't have too much time left and I was blasting away at any group of snow geese I could get my lens on. They were coming in large groups and... (More)
