Cybersecurity is hot, with FireEye's recent doubling in stock price after going public and this week's $255 million acquisition of fingerprint tech company Validity Sensors the most recent examples.

Venture investments in the mobile sector topped $1 billion for the first time in the third quarter, powered by big bets on Flipboard, Uber and Kymeta.

Mobile security software startup Lookout has raised $55 million in funding led by Deutsche Telecom.

Synaptics has agreed to buy Validity Sensors, a company that sells fingerprint ID technology like that found in the new iPhone 5S, for up to $255 million.

TechShop said on Thursday that a new sponsorship deal with Intel has given it the money it needs to relocate and rebuild at its original location in Menlo Park.
