I know nothing really about 'the cloud' but I do know it's like a server system that all your stuff goes to but where is this cloud really located at? Here in the US or some foreign country. I don't trust it and would like to know more about it.
As we explained in our Cloud 101 Special Report: The cloud refers to the network of computer servers that store, process and share information for a computer program or service. It's not much different from the old-style computer mainframes that used to take up huge spaces. But these servers are connected to the Internet and each other and have the ability to sync information between all connected users. Those servers could be down the street or in another country. The complexes that host these servers are called server farms. Google spent $1.1 billion to build a 57-acre complex in Council Bluffs, Iowa and Apple has a huge data center in North Carolina. It's estimated that there are millions of server farms worldwide. Bill writes: I have installed Ubuntu on my XP netbook. However, I didn't go through the elaborate steps in your two-part tutorial. I just downloaded the Ubuntu installer using Windows. I now have a dual-boot set up when I turn on the computer, I have a choice of booting XP or Ubuntu. Did I miss out on anything by not using your approach? Many readers are wondering if, after they install Linux Ubuntu, if they can still keep XP on the computer. You can run a dual boot with both operating systems. However, you will still leave yourself open to the same security risks if you leave XP open to the Internet. You could, however, set it up so you disable your network card when using XP, if you only want to use XP for programs and games that you can use offline. That way, when you want to use those programs you just reboot into XP and start to work. Here's how you can disable your network card. First, go to the Start menu and click on Control Panel.
Then, click on Network Connections.
You will see all of your available connections, generally an Ethernet connection and maybe a wireless adapter as well. Right click on each one, and in the menu that pops up, click Disable.
Once it is disabled, it will always be disabled unless you physically enable it again. That way, each time you start up into the XP operating system, your computer will be safely offline. The internet connection will still be active when using Ubuntu. -Audra Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Cel Mengata from St Paul, Minnesota writes: What is a certificate and how does it work on a computer? Cel, a digital certificate is an attachment to an electronic message used for security purposes. It is the digital equivalent of a physical or paper certificate. Just as a physical license serves to identify an individual and show what they are allowed to do, e.g. a driver's license identifies someone who can legally drive, a digital certificate is presented to prove your identity and the right you have to access certain information on the internet.
It is used to ensure that when data passes from one computer to another over a network, the data will not be able to be read by an unauthorized entity and for extra security measures, the data will be checked by the receiving computer using a digital certificate to verify the integrity of the data and to ensure that it was not altered in transit. When data is sent through a network, there is usually a risk that the message may be intercepted, read and even modified by an unauthorized person. To prevent this, data is usually encrypted to prevent it from being read and understood until it is decrypted. This is where digital certificates come in. Digital certificates use a cryptographic technology called public-key cryptography to sign data and to verify the integrity of the certificate itself. To understand how public-key cryptography works, we will look at how it is used to encrypt email messages from Email Client A to Email Client B. Suppose A wants to send a secure encrypted message to B and wants to ensure that only B can decrypt the message. B owns a public key and a private key. He can only decrypt a message (using his private key) that was encrypted by his public key. To make it possible for others to encrypt messages with his public key, he applies for a digital certificate from a Certified Authority (CA). The CA issues B a digital certificate containing his public key and a variety of other identification information. The CA then makes B's public key available on the internet through a directory service. When A wants to send a message to B, he obtains the digital certificate containing B's public key and identification information from a CA's directory service and uses it to encrypt the message before sending it. When B receives the message, he uses his private key to decrypt it. As long as B's private key is kept secure, no other user can decrypt a message meant for them.
A digital certificate contains information that identifies the certificate's owner and their public key. The certificate also has information that identifies its issuer i.e. the Certified Authority (CA) that issued the certificate. The CA digitally signs each certificate with its own private key. To do this, the CA generates a message digest from the certificate, encrypts the digest with its private key and includes the digital signature as part of the certificate. Clients can use the message digest and the CA's public key to verify the certificate's integrity. If a certificate becomes tampered, its message digest will not match the digest in the CA's digital signature. ~Joyce Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Question: A lot of your articles for backing up files or moving files around say to use a flash drive, but you don't explain how to use it. My son wanted some photos from my computer and said that I should copy them to flash drive and just send it to him. I bought one at the store, but it doesn't have any instructions. What do you do with a flash drive? A USB flash drive (sometimes called a jump drive or memory stick. A thumb drive is slightly different because they have a write-protect feature) is simply a data storage device just like the old floppy disc, but it stores much more data. Though, since it has no moving parts, it's not technically a drive. It draws power from the USB port on your computer. USB ports are generally located either in the front of the tower of a desktop or on the sides of a laptop or all-in-one. They look like this:
To use a drive, all you have to do is put it in the port. Some flash drives may have a switch that allow you to retract the Male A-plug (the part that plugs into the port), so you need to make sure it is...
