Quick Tip

Matt writes:

I have a Compaq Presario C500 and I've been trying to update to a newer version of Internet Explorer. My computer keeps trying to tell me to use Windows 8 or 8.1. According to the download my current Vista does not support newer versions. Help!

Matt – if you are using Windows Vista you can only go up to Internet Explorer 9. It sounds like you are trying to update to Internet Explorer 11. That version is only compatible with Windows 8.1.

Here 's a list of which versions of IE work with which operating systems:

Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1,Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 7 – Internet Explorer 11

Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 7 – Internet Explorer 10

Windows Vista – Internet Explorer 9

Windows XP – Internet Explorer 8

There's nothing you can do to upgrade past IE 9 with Vista. Though you could try either the Chrome or Firefox browsers if you are having issues with a particular website.

It's 5 LED's Worth of Fully Functional Wireless Beauty!

Tool and Hardware Free - Self Adhesive Hanging!

100% WIRELESS - RUNS ON BATTERIES! MAKE ANY ROOM SHINE!

Pick it - Stick it - Let There be Light!

Life Shouldn't Be So Dark...

Aren't you tired of opening up your closet when you get up in the morning and using a flashlight to decide what to wear?

Are you sick of stumbling around in your pantry, tool shed or garage, falling over various objects while trying to find just ONE thing?

You'd LOVE to do something about it, but there's a problem: there's no wiring running through these areas, therefore NOWHERE to install a bulb or lamp! You're not alone...and we've got the PERFECT SOLUTION!

5 LED Lights. No Outlets. No Wiring. NO ASSEMBLY!

The GENIUS FACTORY just put this thing out on the market, and it's going to make your life SO much better!

Imagine being able to walk into that dark closet, hallway, pantry, garage or anywhere else you lack light...and being able to turn on 5 super bright LED lights with the tap of your hand! That's what this does!

And it's unbelievably easy to use, too. There's no assembly required, no electricity, either. This runs on batteries that last FOREVER (due to the efficiency of LED bulbs). In fact, you don't even have to use tools to hang it. Check this thing out!
Motion Sensored Tap Technology!

Motion Sensor Madness! Forget about looking around in the dark for the switch. Don't worry about a pull chain. All you have to do to turn this thing on is tap it!
There's a sensor inside the base that knows when you tap the light, and once you do...you'll be flooded with the power of 5 LED bulbs!
It's the ANTI-DARKNESS light - and it couldn't be any easier to use! And speaking of simplicity, wait til you've picked a spot to put it...

Tool and Hardware Free Hanging - Pick it & Stick it!

Yep - the old pick and stick. That's the first thing you'll notice about this light. There's no need to drill it in. No need for tools and messes. Just stick the adhesive backing anywhere you need light, and it's hung!

If there's ANY room in your home that doesn't have wiring and you need BRIGHT light, this is EXACTLY WHAT YOU NEED!

Works perfectly in your car, too! That's right, it's self adhesive, so you can stick it on the inside roof of your car for a FAR better light than that weak yellow overhead bulb. We spend a lot of time in the car, and this awesome feature shouldn't be overlooked!

It's Also QUITE the Looker...

It's an elegant looking light, as you can see. So if you'd like extra light in a common room like a kitchen or living room, you don't have to worry about an eye-sore!

This light is sleek and slim, and there's no ugly chain hanging down. Couple that with the stylish liquid metallic color, and you're looking at a nice, fully functional piece of LED art! Seriously, hang 'em in the kitchen and people are gonna think they cost a fortune!

And Speaking of Costing a Fortune - This Does NOT!

On The Move

Karen from Idaho writes:

I want to get rid of the stupid charm bar in and especially the "clock" that keeps popping up in my way. The charm bar needs to be transparent not wipe out what you are trying to read and made narrower. And the clock can go completely after all it is down in the corner of the screen! I have found no way to shut it off. Nor have I found a way to narrow the charms bar and make it transparent. When I want it is when it decides to hide completely. And after 7 months I still hate Win 8 and advise others not to purchase.

Karen, the Charms Bar is only supposed to display when you select it and it should disappear as soon as you click or tap off it. You activate them in one of two ways. Either by swiping from the right or by moving your mouse or touchpad pointer to the upper or lower right corner.

Try to keep your mouse away from the very far right corners and stay away from the very far right of your touchpad when you're using Windows 8.1. It sounds like you are accidentally activating it. I've not experienced this issue myself with Windows 8.1, but it seems some touchpads on certain computer models are very sensitive. But don't worry, it's really easy to turn off...

From The Archives

Reply vs. Reply All

Using email seems like the easiest way to collaborate with a group. It can, however, be confusing (and potentially embarassing) if you do not effectively use your 'reply' and 'reply all' function.

Reply should be used when you want to send a message in reply to one person. With an email sent to mutliple people, hitting reply will send your email to the most recent sender. For example, Sharon receives an email from Bob that was sent to her and her friend, Linda. Before she saw the email, Linda did a 'reply all' that said 'Sounds good to me!' If Sharon hits reply, only Linda will receive her email.

Reply All should be used when you want to send a message in reply to the entire group. Do not use this for personal comments that should/do not need to be seen by the other users involved in the conversation.

Different email programs use different options, but here are a few examples of where to find the options...

Today's Feature

Eugene from Chino California asked us: "Is there a simplified tree, maybe in several pages, to show what is in Windows 7 in such things as the control panel or any of the solution devices which are used for maintaining a PC?"

We thought that was a great idea and decided to do a special series. In part one we looked at System and Security. In part two we checked out Network and Internet. Part three was Hardware and Software. Part four was Programs. In part five we saw User Accounts and Family Safety. Part six was occupied with Appearance and Personalization.

For part seven, we've got a look at Clock, Language and Region Settings:

Amanda's Coolsite

Geekosystem

This site just recently came onto my radar via a friend who shared an article from it over Facebook. I went to explore that article and found a whole site devoted to bringing you the latest geek news and information technology and entertainment. Plus they share links to lots of cool geek stuff.

When you arrive at the site you'll find the latest featured materials on the main page with a navigation strip along the top. The places you can navigate to are Tech, Entertainment, Science, Gaming, Space, Weird, Features, Podcast, and Latest. You'll also find a search field to the far right of the menu.

While I was there one of the featured articles was about a nature documentary narrated by David Tennant featuring a spy turtle. I hope this documentary cross over to BBC America at some point so I can watch it. There were also articles on NASA, Minecraft, Mars One and more.

I don't recommend that you let kids poke around the site unsupervised; I didn't see anything that was too risque, but there were topics like drugs, and some topics had mild profanity. It's definitely a site geared towards adult geeks and not baby geeks! But there was so many cool things, that I really wanted to share it with all of you.

Go check it out today!

Stream Crossing

Why did the grizzly cross the stream? Well, it's a bit like this. I came upon these two while searching for a large male grizzly I'd encountered the day before. However, Yellowstone is never quite the same from day to day, and instead this morning she granted me…(More)

Nose To Nose

This was captured shortly after I drove into Yellowstone from Gardiner. Normally, expectations tend to be low as you make the 5 mile or so drive from Gardiner to Mammoth, but today would prove an exception to that rule. As I drove along, admiring the freshly fallen snow, I rounded a corner and spotted a group of elk congregating in an area known as the "Chinese Gardens". I wasted no time... (More)

Hard Turn

It all started when I spotted a nice group of pronghorn with a good number of seemingly frisky bucks on the side of a large hill. Initially they were wary, but it wasn't long before they were ignoring me and going about their business. There wasn't too much action at first, and I busied myself with a few snapshots of some of the better looking animals – and then a buck burst into a run after one of the females! (More)

Water-resistant!

Shock-resistant!

Compact, pocketable size!

This is the easiest way EVER to transfer files to and from internal hard drives! Sounds simple - but the uses are off the charts!

How's it work?

You take an internal hard drive - IDE or SATA (that's pretty much everything from the last 10+ years) and plug it into this device. Then plug the USB cable into your computer - that's it!

The hard drive you hooked up will show up as a removable drive under My Computer! No pesky driver install required! How cool is that?

This is the biggie! Let's say you have an old computer laying around and you REALLY want to get the info off the old hard drive and onto your new computer. With this, just pop out the old hard drive, hook it to this little gadget, and plug the USB cable into your new computer.

You just got your data back!

Oh, and if you're like me and have been computing for awhile, you probably have an old hard drive or two lying around. If so, just hook it up to this and have instant USB access to your files! Now THAT'S smart!

My favorite use for this? Using it as a cheap backup device!

Forget spending $100-$150 for an external HD that you'll just shove in a drawer after your backup! Grab a MUCH cheaper internal drive OR just grab an old hard drive you have lying around that's not gettin' any love - then hook 'em up to this cable - instant backup device!

When you're done, just stick the drive in your desk drawer! Hey, that's my backup plan most of the time! Internal drives are easier to store, cheaper to buy (think WAY cheaper) and just as reliable!

So, you have a large file - or group of files - that just won't fit on your flash drive but you need to get them to another computer. Hmm. what to do...

I know - grab that old hard drive sitting in your drawer and use this handy cable put them on there! After all, this cable is basically turning your old hard drive into a giant flash drive, right? Why not use it like one?

OK, this may not be for everyone, but I've done this several times with these cables and it works GREAT!

See, I get a lot of people that come to me with infected computers. Well, some of those infections take HOURS to get off their computer because every time you boot Windows, the virus turns on as well. Smarter viruses then disable all the software tools you install to get rid of them! ARRGH!

So, instead of taking hours to try and manually remove a bad virus, I just pop out the hard drive and - using this cable - hook it to my personal computer. Now I have access to the everything but since windows didn't boot on the infected drive, the virus STAYS DORMANT - and is helpless to stop me from killing it! A quick scan and removal with from my AV software and the problem is fixed!

All thanks to this handy little cable!

Versatility Baby!

Getting easy access to the data on an internal drive that's been removed from a PC is impossible without either a cable like this or tearing apart a compatible computer and hooking the drive back up (assuming you even have the proper connection on the new computer).

Oh, and if you went from a desktop to a laptop - forget it - THIS is the ONLY solution to retrieve that data once you remove the drive! It's one of those tools that every PC user just needs to have, that's for sure!

Of all the extra computer accessories I've purchased over the years, I use THIS cable the most!
