Facebook Gives Up On E-mail

Social Media giant Facebook has decided to give up on the idea of Facebook e-mail. Facebook e-mail addresses were introduced in 2010, but never really caught on. E-mails send to a facebook.com address went directly into the user's message box. It's not like the company is giving up on the messaging game. They just spent $19 billion dollars to purchase WhatsApp.

SkyDrive Is Now OneDrive

Microsoft SkyDrive will now be known as OneDrive. The company was forced to change the name of their cloud service because of a lawsuit filed by the UK's Sky Network. As park of a settlement, Microsoft paid the network a nice chunk of change and agreed to change the name of their service. This was a major hassle for the tech giant, since SkyDrive was the centerpiece of their drive towards become a devices and services company and is an integral feature of Windows 8 and the Office 365 subscription plan.

Along with the name change comes some new features, including automatic camera backup for Android, easier video sharing and a plan where they offer you up to 5 GB of free storage space if you refer your friends to the service.

Smart Car Allows Deliveries To Your Trunk

Volvo is testing a smart car that would use GPS to allow delivery service to bring packages to your car. The system would then unlock your trunk to allow the delivery to be placed inside and then lock it again.

Volvo demonstrated the system at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The digital key system would allow parcel companies to notify you via an app that you had a delivery and you would then authorize the company to drop the package off at your vehicle's location.

The delivery option would be a feature of Volvo On Call, an app that allows drivers to heat or cool their car, check its location or even check the gas level using a phone or tablet.

Volvo says of the 100 people they tested this service out with, the majority liked it.

Bill writes:

Isn't this XP stuff just a repeat of all the Y2K hype? Wasn't the world supposed to end the and all the computers melt or explode or something. And that all turned out to be nothing.

Bill, as someone who spent the majority of 1999 neck-high in Y2K compliance procedures, I can tell you that it wasn't all hype. I worked at a cable company back then and the Y2K compliance team discovered multiple systems that weren't equipped to switch to the year 2000.

Now this didn't all happen at the stroke of midnight when the year rolled over to 2000. The problems became apparent much earlier when the people tasked with checking into things, looked ahead to moving dates ahead on the computer and saw there was no option past 1999.

Since systems often start looking forward months or years out, there was time to fix these issues and businesses did. The reason you didn't see a meltdown was that people paid attention and took care of the issues in critical systems. Problems were solved long before New Year's Eve. The media buzz about potential disaster on that night was overblown. But only because people listened and took care of the issue.

Computers 101

Gerald writes:
I installed Ubuntu on a desktop computer with little trouble, I'm using Win XP on the same computer 90% of the time. If it would run more XP programs I'd continue using it instead of XP. I guess I do have a question, where can the program Wine which you mentioned be obtained. It may be all that I need to make better use of Ubuntu.

Folks who have changed their operating system from Windows to the Linux platform are probably missing some of the Windows applications and games that were important to them. Although Linux provides an ample amount of applications that substitute almost all Windows software, it's still quite hard to overlook some of Windows games and applications that were used and enjoyed on a regular basis by a long-term Windows users. Fortunately, Linux has invented a simple solution for it, Wine.

Wine is a free and open-source software application that allows applications designed for Microsoft Windows to run on Linux operating systems. It can be also termed as a translation layer capable of running Windows applications.

Advantages of using Wine

Wine comes with some advantages and benefits such as:

  • Using Wine enables you to take advantage of Unix strong points such as stability, flexibility and remote administration, while using your favorite Windows application.

  • Wine makes it possible to call Windows application from scripts which fall under Unix's features.

  • Wine lets you connect Windows application remotely.

  • Wine is an open source software and thus you can customize its features according to your needs.

How to install Wine on Ubuntu

While searching for instruction of installing wine application over the Web, you'd find a lot of complicated guides that features installing Wine through Ubuntu terminal, that can be quite hard to understand and implement for a not-so-savvy computer user. So lets try the simplest of all Wine installation:

  1. Go to https://apps.ubuntu.com through your browser or open up "Software-center" from applications.

  2. Search for 'Wine" through the search Bar.

  3. Find "Microsfoft Windows Compatibility Layer"

  4. Click on install and you are done.

Four easy steps and you have Wine installed on your Ubuntu. Wine has two versions, stable and beta. Stable version are highly tested ones. On the other hand, beta versions are used to run newer applications but are tested less so you might experience some issues with beta version. Some applications only work on the beta version, so download keep that in mind when choosing which version to use.

In part 2, we'll look at the process of running an application using Wine.

Greg from Jupiter, Florida writes:

If I was to download Linux, will my files in Microsoft still open without having Microsoft windows?

With the end of Windows XP, many people are thinking about switching to the Linux Ubuntu operating system. You can find programs similar to most Windows applications to run on Ubuntu, but many people still miss there favorite Windows programs. But there is a way around that. In part 1 of this series, we showed you how to download and install Wine, a program that will enable you run many Windows programs on Linux Ubuntu.

In part 2, we'll show you how to run an application using Wine. If you haven't read part 1 yet, go back and learn how to install Wine on Ubuntu.

As soon as you installed wine successfully, you will be able to run Windows applications with .exe or .msi extensions. Simply go to the Windows application you have installed on your computer and right click on it to see some options. Left click on "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader" and you will be able to access the application just as you used to do with Windows.

Wine Application Compatibility

Wine is still a work in progress, so each and every Windows application won't run through it. The best way to check, weather an application will work, is to search for the application in the Wine database. You can see the ratings and comments of previous users and that should give you a good idea which ones will work and which ones won't. Applications are also rated according to Wine compatibility.

Applications are also rated according to Wine compatibility. Applications that would definitely work thorough Wine are rated as "Platinum." Applications that won't run through Wine are rated as "Garbage".

Wine Utilities

Wine comes with a set of utilities such as "Configure Wine", "Uninstall Wine Software" and "Winetricks".

While configuring Wine you will get a lot of options such as choosing a driver, audio and graphics option and also your desired Windows version thorough which you wish to install a particular software like Windows XP, Windows 7 and etc.

"Uninstall Wine Software" let's you uninstall any previously installed Windows software through Wine. Simply click on the required application from the given list and click on "Remove" option to uninstall the application.

"Winetricks" helps you automate some tasks. It is sort of a guide that helps you while installing some popular Windows applications. Instructions are given for specific applications, not for all.

Wine's Virtual File System

Wine uses virtual file system, but it is kept hidden. To see it, go to .wine folder through Home folder and click one View > Show Hidden Folders. Now you can see a hidden folder named "Drive_C" which contains all Wine's content.

You will also find a lot of help available in the Wine forums – where you can ask questions and learn from other users.

iPhone Apps Riskier Than Android

A new report by Appthority looks at the security risks for popular mobile apps and came to a surprising conclusion for many, iPhone apps are actually riskier than Android apps. Apple devices have a reputation for being safer than competitors, but this study says 91% of iOS apps exhibit at least one risky behavior compared to 83% of Android apps. That's still not a great showing for Android.

Appthority studied 400 recent apps and looked for things like location tracking, accessing the address book or contact list, single-step sign on, UDID (identifying the user), in-app purchasing and sharing your date with ad networks and analytics companies.

The study found that risky behaviors were more common in...

Robert from Mississippi writes:

Like to know if I buy a 32″ or bigger TV monitor can I keep my computer speaker hookup to my computer or do I have to hook them up to TV monitor?

Robert, if you are planning on using the large screen primarily as a computer monitor, you'd be better off actually purchasing a 32″ or larger computer monitor as opposed to a TV. A monitor will give you a much better image. The difference between a TV and a monitor is that the television is set up to receive over-the-air broadcast signals and will probably have inputs that work with your cable or satellite provider and devices like game consoles and DVD players. A monitor is specifically designed to work with a computer.

Before you decide to use an HDTV as a monitor, you'll want to consider...

Ken from Greer,S.C. writes: You guys and gals at World Start are great when it comes to electronics so I hope you can answer my question. I like to share videos (like YouTube) on Facebook and especially in email. When I click on a video link I receive via email it goes straight to big screen and begins playing. When I share from YouTube it goes to the YouTube page with the smaller version. How do I get the link to go to full screen and auto play?

Why thanks! We're blushing a little right now. Ken, I love sharing videos from YouTube as well. A group of friends and I get together on Facebook once a week to share music videos from the 1980s.

There are several ways to share videos from you tube. You can choose email, social media, embedding the video on a website or simply copy and paste the link.

When you share a video from YouTube by clicking on e-mail, many times (but not all depending on your e-mail program), it will show up embedded in the video and you can watch it right from your e-mail.

What is Bluetooth? What is it used for?

Answer:

When looking at specifications for computers, phones and tablets you may see the word Bluetooth but what does it refer to? What is it used for?

Bluetooth is a wireless communication standard built in to many electronics, which allows you to connect peripherals like headsets, keyboards, mice and speakers. Bluetooth is popular because it requires very little device power and requires no special adapters outside of the Bluetooth chip built into the devices. The principal downside of Bluetooth is that it only works over short range. The range is 30 feet at maximum, though in most situations you can expect a reliable working distance of about 10 feet.

The primary use of Bluetooth is to...

Bullet Journal

I have been so anxious this semester. It feels like things are rocketing out of control sometimes. My brain behaves like this I often turn to list-making to impose some order on the situation. I'm a natural list-maker: grocery lists, chore lists, work lists, budget lists, scattered all over the place. Well no more! I've discovered Bullet journaling and now I want to share it with all of you.

I'm sure you can find tons of applications that will do list making on your favorite device, but I've often found I download them and then don't use them. I still make lists on post-it notes, and on my computer with sticky notes. I think with list-making part of the helpful part is physical making myself sit down, be still, and compose a list.

I practiced with scrap paper for the end of February, while I waited for a moleskin to come from Amazon, and I found that this methodology was very helpful to me and was decreasing my anxiety by a ton. So how does it work? I think it's best if you click the link and then watch the short video that explains how a bullet journal works to get that answer.

Then check out the rest of the site via the back button and Get Started or the Close and Get Started button on the video. There you will find tips about Logging and Sorting your Bullet Journal on the left side of the page. Each is succinct and most have a visual example so you can see what it would look like in your journal.

I think my favorite part is going to be migrating tasks forward into the next month. I start feeling really guilty if I have tasks left undone (I often can't sleep because of it), and I feel like knowing I can migrate them forward (provided they weren't deadline specific) allows me to let go of that guilt.

I've also noticed that this is a great way for me to keep track of all the things I need to do for the multitude of things I do (work, school, ga position, homework, conferences, housework, animal care, etc.) and helps me find time to do things for relaxation and enjoyment like knitting and spinning. Downtime I desperately need to be a balanced human being.

I hope that this becomes a habit that I can build up and use long into the future! I even bought a cheery moleskin journal in a sunny yellow and fancy pens that won't bleed to make myself want to stick with it. Wish me luck!

Mary Ann's Marvelous Menu

I love recipes sites. And I don't know if you could tell, but I must have been very hungry when I was researching sites to write up lately with the influx of recipe sites. I like this site because it features a menu of recipes that can get you through a lot of different occasions. Need something to take a to brunch? What about a potluck? Or even a barbecue? Well you'll find plenty that fit the bill here.

When you arrive at the site, all you have to do is scroll down the page and click on the recipe you want to check out. They're organized into categories like Appetizers, Special Sauces, Classy Breakfast and Brunch, Accompaniments, Salads, Entrees, and Desserts.

I like that there is a such a variety, and that a sauce section is included. It seems like sauce sections get left out a lot. I also really want to try the Easy Crescent Reuben Roll-ups. That looks like a really delicious way to enjoy a Reuben sandwich.

Check out these awesome recipes today!
