Joyce from Ferryville Wisconsin: I have about 80 GB of Medical Research that I've copied to my documents & emails. Can I copy these and open them on my Windows 7 computer? I've noticed on my XP that you have to have an internet connection when I open them on XP, which I won't be able to do safely after April 2014, since there will be no support anymore for XP. Joyce, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to transfer your data to your Windows 7 computer. The only issue you might have with a file would be if it could only be opened in a program that's not compatible with Windows 7. If your have e-mails in an e-mail client like Outlook, there are special steps you will need to follow to export the data. 80 GB is a lot of research. Eugene DeFalco from Home writes: I am running windows 7. I want to change the picture of one of my icons. I do the same as I used to do running XP. But this does not work on Win7. Can you help? The problem you are experiencing is likely caused by a change in how Windows 7 allows users to modify icons. You may notice that some icons contain an option to manually change its image, while others do not. Windows 7 unfortunately only allows you to change the icons for folders and shortcuts (with a few minor exceptions, such as the Recycle Bin). This doesn't mean you can't change the icons you want to change, however, it just means you need to add in another step and make shortcuts first. When a new program is installed, Windows 7 typically doesn't place the original program icon on the desktop, but instead creates a shortcut to that program. If for some reason you don't have a shortcut, making one is incredibly simple. To get started, open up the Start menu and click "Computer." Navigate to the folder containing the program icon you want to change. For instance, if you wanted to change the icon for Firefox, you'd navigate through the "C:" drive to "Program Files" and "Mozilla Firefox." Right-click the program icon you want to change, and select "Create Shortcut." You may see a warning box appear on the screen stating that Windows can't create a shortcut in that location. If the box appears, simply click "Yes" to automatically set the shortcut on your desktop. If the box doesn't popup on the screen, click the new shortcut and drag it onto your desktop. Minimize the window and return to the desktop. Right-click your new shortcut and select the "Properties" option. Navigate to the tab labeled "Shortcut" and click the "Change Icon" button located near the bottom of the window. Now you can modify the icon, either using one of the pre-installed options picture, or you can instead click "Browse" and choose an image file saved on your computer. But what about those standard desktop icons like the Recycle Bin? Those are even easier. Click anywhere on the desktop that doesn't have an icon and select "Personalize," and then click the "Change Desktop Icons" link at the top-left corner. Click the icon you want to modify and then click the "Change Icon" button. For those not familiar with the Sonos system. They make speakers that allow you to wirelessly stream music from your library or music service like Pandora, SirusXM, Spotify, Amazon Cloud Player, Songza, Hype Machine, Tunein, Rhapsody and Slacker into the speakers. You can control the system with an App available for Android and Apple devices. It supports MP3, AAC+, Ogg Vorbis, Apple Lossless, WAV (uncompressed), Amazon Cloud, WMA(compressed), iTunes, Audible (format 4), Flac (lossless) and AIFF (uncompressed) formats. That makes it very convenient to listen to music outside or to place speakers in the home. You can also copy music to a drive on some of the devices. Answer: A USB 3.0 card is an expansion card you place in your computer which will offer USB 3.0 ports. USB 3.0 is significantly faster than 2.0 (over 10x faster), and is fantastic for external hard drives and storage devices. I've got some good news for you – from looking at the specifications for your motherboard, you may be able to add one. Photoshop Elements: Layers This article–the third in a series about Photoshop Elements–examines adding layers; an extremely useful and versatile feature, which offers many creative opportunities. There are several ways to add layers, but the two ways that I use most often will be described here. Once you've added layers, move them around; adjust their sizes, color, brightness and contrast. In other words, have fun. Click the links below for the first two articles in this series. To provide an example of editing possibilities, the fish tank in the image below is part of an ongoing project. Eventually, this (or a variation of it) will be painted on a wall inside a local business at 8′ x 15′. To prepare the proposal, several dozen photographs were taken at the aquarium of a nearby zoo. From those, a few were selected and cleaned up (backgrounds removed, contrast and lighting adjusted, etc.). After that, a proportionally correct (8" x 15") image was created in Elements, with the edited photos added as layers. The advantage of doing it this way is that individual layers (each fish, the coral, and anything else that might be added) can be moved, resized, or manipulated in any way. For example, if I decide the shark should be moved further into the background, its image can be reduced, darkened, and diffused. Several days after the preceding paragraph was written, the size of the project was changed from 8′ x 15′ to 5′ x 14′. Since it was set up as described, I only needed to create a file at the updated proportions, drag the layers into the new image, and arrange them accordingly (see below). The finished product will be entirely rendered by hand, but digital editing makes major preliminary changes like this considerably easier than the labor intensive alternatives. Antarctic Heritage Trust I couldn't wait to share this site with you when I ran across it in my Internet explorations. I stumbled across these photos that were discovered in Antarctica from an expedition in Captain Scott's hut. Taken between 1914 and 1917, the photos are a century old and provide a look into the past. There are a few things in life I have a complete fascination with and the Antarctic is one of them. When you arrive at the site, you'll find some general information about the race for Antarctica, and the Heritage Trust. You'll also find the announcement of when the photographs were found and a link to a .PDF filled with more information about them. If you look at the right side of the page, you'll find a link that will whisk you away to the photo gallery of photos they recovered and painstakingly restored. If you go to the photo gallery it isn't a collection of thumbnails, but rather a slideshow of the images that you can stop and play as you like, or use the right and left arrows to navigate more quickly through them or to page back to see one again. Underneath the image information about the image will load. Below the slideshow player you'll find images that link you to other slideshow galleries that will open up in a little pop up window. The tools to navigate through the images is the same. At the top of the page you'll find a navigation strip featuring the categories About Us, Explorer's Bases, Conservation, Education, and Support Our Work. Each has a drop down menu that will let you navigate to different sections in the category when you mouse over it.
