Wasn't the world supposed to end the and all the computers melt or explode or something. And that all turned out to be nothing. Bill, as someone who spent the majority of 1999 neck-high in Y2K compliance procedures, I can tell you that it wasn't all hype. I worked at a cable company back then and the Y2K compliance team discovered multiple systems that weren't equipped to switch to the year 2000. Now this didn't all happen at the stroke of midnight when the year rolled over to 2000. The problems became apparent much earlier when the people tasked with checking into things, looked ahead to moving dates ahead on the computer and saw there was no option past 1999. Since systems often start looking forward months or years out, there was time to fix these issues and businesses did. The reason you didn't see a meltdown was that people paid attention and took care of the issues in critical systems. Problems were solved long before New Year's Eve. David from St Albans, Vt writes: Why is it that in Firefox I can't access my contacts but I have no problem getting to them in Chrome or Internet Explorer? This is when I am in the New Outlook. Hello David, I would suggest trying to reset FireFox to its default state, especially since it is only happening when using FireFox. Here's how: Depending on your version of Firefox, you would either click on the FireFox button at the top of the screen, and click help, or just click on help in the toolbar. Then click on Troubleshooting Information. You will see a box at the top that says Reset Firefox. A reset will create a new user profile. It will keep all bookmarks, history, passwords, and cookies, but will remove any extensions, website specific preferences, search engines, downloads, security and plugin settings, and toolbar customizations. It will save your old profile on your desktop, though, so if it does not fix the problem, you can copy files from the old profile to the new. iPhone Apps Riskier Than Android A new report by Appthority looks at the security risks for popular mobile apps and came to a surprising conclusion for many, iPhone apps are actually riskier than Android apps. Apple devices have a reputation for being safer than competitors, but this study says 91% of iOS apps exhibit at least one risky behavior compared to 83% of Android apps. That's still not a great showing for Android. Appthority studied 400 recent apps and looked for things like location tracking, accessing the address book or contact list, single-step sign on, UDID (identifying the user), in-app purchasing and sharing your date with ad networks and analytics companies. Buffering is no fun for anyone, so you are not alone Joe. Videos that continually stop and start on YouTube are a frequent source of headaches for many internet users. However, there are definitely some things you can do to help ease this problem and ensure that your online video viewing experience is as good as it can be. Try some of the following ideas. 1. Faster internet connections – Generally speaking, a faster internet connection will buffer streaming video a faster than a slower connection. So, if your internet service provider offers a quicker connection than the one you have, you will likely experience less buffering by upgrading to a faster speed. 2. Pause and play – A common trick employed by seasoned YouTube viewers is the 'pause and play' trick. As soon as the video starts to play, click the play button again to pause it. You will then see a faint red bar slowly start to crawl from left to right as your computer buffers the video for you. Decipher Computer Beep Codes Computer troubleshooting doesn't always have to be a vague mystery. In many cases, your computer will let you know about hardware issues and even an impending crash through beep codes. These Morse code-like sounding beeps are your keys to understanding problems with your motherboard, RAM, hard drive and more. Once you know what they mean, you'll have a solid starting point for troubleshooting and fixing your computer. What Are Beep Codes? When your computer first starts, it goes through the POST (Power On Self Test) before starting the operating system to check that all hardware and system requirements are working properly. Older systems usually beeped once if the system passed the test. Newer systems will either beep once or not at all. If your computer doesn't pass POST, you'll hear a series of beeps which vary based on your BIOS (Basic Input Output System) manufacturer. The BIOS is vital to starting all the necessary hardware and your operating system when your computer first boots. Since the BIOS is software installed on the motherboard, the beep codes are based around your BIOS or motherboard manufacturer. Each manufacturer has their own system of codes that let you know what hardware isn't working correctly.
