John from Georgia writes: In regard to 'XP' Security continuation, I read that Google Chrome will continue to keep XP updated and 'protected' after MS abandons it next April but you need to use Chrome as your Browser. Have you any additional info? John, Google will keep offering patches and security fixes for their Google Chrome browser on Windows XP for one additional year. But that doesn't mean they are supporting the entire XP operating system.
Google Director of Engineering and Public Safety Mark Larson said, "Like all technologies that come to their end-of-life, the XP operating system and most of its desktop applications will no longer receive updates and security patches." The intention is to give Chrome users a little more time to migrate to newer versions of Windows. But your system could still be vulnerable. These patches are only for the Google Chrome browser. Google will not be able to offer patches or fixes for the XP operating system. A virus could still arrive via an e-mail attachment or as part of a program download and unless it is one that affects Google Chrome, there's not much Google can do about it. ~ CynthiaClick here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Windows XP - Denial, Anger & Acceptance Many of you may have heard of Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's five stages of grief. She named them as denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. She was talking about catastrophic personal loss, but as the end of Microsoft support for Windows XP nears, I've observed the same reaction in XP users.
1. Denial Microsoft will change their mind. Someone else might step in and take over. After 12 years, Microsoft feels XP's time has come and gone. The operating system has security issues and just can't keep up with some of the latest technology. The company is determined to shift towards being a devices and services business and supporting a 12-year-old operating system is just not part of that plan. 2. Anger We've seen plenty of that in comments, e-mails and questions. Readers have called Microsoft, greedy, lazy, short-sighted, stupid and a lot thing that we can't post on a family-friendly website. 3. Bargaining Readers have asked if they run up-to-date security software, won't that take care of the problem? What if they are very careful about where they go online or just use it for e-mail. Security providers like Norton and AVG have made it clear that without Microsoft offering the security support they cannot guarantee the safety of XP systems. 4. Depression According to experts, it's not a good idea to attempt to cheer up the grieving person at this point. So I won't try to tell you that you may be able to upgrade your current computer to Windows 7 or 8 or that you might enjoy a newer, faster computer. And I won't even touch the fact that Windows 8 really is a pretty good operating system. 5. Acceptance Once you've reached that stage, we can help you out. My first suggestion would be to run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor or Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant to see if your current computer can handle a new operating system. We're going to have more articles and tips on making the change as the deadline for the end of support draws near. Remember April 8, 2014 is the end date for Microsoft support for Windows XP. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Catherine from Delaware writes "Is it difficult to hook up something like Hulu via computer to TV. I am a novice at 80 and was wondering if I could do it?" Hi, Catherine. Thanks for the great question.
For those who don't know, Hulu is one of many great video on demand services including Netflix, and Amazon Video. Probably the easiest way to do this is to connect your computer to your TV. If you search our website's archives, you'll find lots of good articles on this, but this is the short version: if your computer has an HDMI output and you have a high-def TV, simply hook an HDMI cable from your computer to your TV and enjoy. If you have a laptop, make sure that your laptop is set so that the computer doesn't go to sleep when you close the lid. That way you can have your laptop closed so that you don't have your video running on two screens. If your computer doesn't have an HDMI output, there are some other ways. Tom from Pennsylvania writes: I am running windows XP home edition service pack 3. I was running the CHKDSK and a warning come up that the F parameter was not specified. Can you elaborate on this? I have had the computer shut down and reboot while I was using it, is why I was running CHKDSK. I am using Microsoft Security essentials for virus protection. Answer:
The chkdsk utility is a built-in program from Microsoft which scans, verifies and can fix some file system errors and hard drive corruption/errors. You can launch the utility from Windows by opening a command prompt (hold down Windows Key and Press R key, type cmd.exe and press enter) and typing chkdsk. The error you are receiving about the f parameter indicates you've not told chkdsk to fix errors it has found. Head on over to WorldStart for more!
Windows 8.1 3D Builder Lets You Bring Ideas To Life One of the neat features of Windows 8.1 is that it can handle 3D printing. So, if you own or have access to a 3D printer, you can create and print actual objects.
To download 3D Builder, just go to the Windows 8 App Store and type 3D Builder in the search box. The app is free and you just tap Install to install it immediately.
Microsoft says the app is ideally suited for touchscreen devices but also works fine on laptops and desktops using a keyboard and mouse. Just click WorldStart for the rest of this tip! For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
Writer's Almanac The Writer's Almanac is brought to you by Garrison Keillor and Public Radio. It offers up a daily dose of poetry with a dash of literary history thrown in! Navigation is sort of setup blogstyle, in that there's the most recent episode/entry featured on the main page and then you use the Next and Prev buttons to navigate through the older entries. At the top, right of the page you'll find more navigation options like the links to the Archive, Podcast, and Bookshelf. The Bookshelf is really cool it is a section devoted to interviews with authors! Right now the featured interview is with Mary Oliver, an author from my neck of the woods Maple Heights, a suburb of Cleveland and talks about her new book Dog Songs. At the end of the interview you'll find the credits for who the interviewer was. This a really cool site that has worked its way into my routine of sites I visit daily. So go check it out for yourself! http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
