Quick Tip

Helen from Morrisville, PA writes:

I have seen many notes about Blu-ray. I have no idea what this is. Could you explain it?

Sure Helen. Blu-Ray is a format for digital storage on discs. It is the same size and shape as a conventional DVD or CD, but can hold much more information, giving you a much clearer high-definition picture. The first Blu-Ray player was released in 2003.

You cannot play a Blu-Ray disc on a standard DVD drive. Though you can play a standard DVD in a Blu-Ray drive. So be careful when you're purchasing DVDs to make sure you're not buying Blu-Ray if you don't have a player.

Blu-Ray players are generally more expensive than standard DVD players. Though, these days you can find a basic Blu-Ray staring around $50 and running up over $1000 for fancy models with streaming features. Blu-Ray discs will often cost $4 or $5 more than standard DVDs.

If you own a HDTV or HD monitor, a Blu-Ray is worth the cost for the improvement in picture.

One last thing, don't confuse Blu-Ray with Bluetooth. Bluetooth refers to the ability to connect devices like headphones and keyboard wirelessly.

No Hard Drive Lives Forever...

Hard drives are sensitive, complex mechanical devices. Most modern hard drives can hit over 7200 RPMs!

But it's not without a cost: No matter HOW hard you try, 100% of hard drives will eventually crash.

AND THAT ALMOST ALWAYS SPELLS DISASTER!

What do you do when your hard drive crashes?

Well, there are only two outcomes...

1. If you don't back up your data:

It's gone. Throw your hard drive in the trash and start fresh... because you are NOT recovering that data. A dead hard drive is just that. It's game over.

2. If you DO back up your data:

You take your handy little SanDisk 16GB back up flash drive and put all your saved files on your next computer. With the push of a button!

You don't lose a single file, and you don't spend the weekend wishing you had printed those vacation photos that you'll never get back.

Which one would you prefer?

There's only ONE reason not to back up data: it USED to be hard. It took a lot of time, it took expensive hardware or software, and it took some tech-savvy. You had to know file extensions, directories, the whole works.

NOT ANYMORE! IT JUST GOT AS EASY AS CLICKING ONE BUTTON!

The SanDisk 16GB Instant Backup Flash Drive!

NO software. NO set up. NO time consuming steps. All you do is plug it in and press the button!

Could it BE any easier?

The first time you pop it in, it just asks you what directories you want to backup. After that, every new backup is just a button away.

What's great is that it keeps ALL of your directories and folders right in the order you have them on your PC. So you'll know EXACTLY where to find them on the flash drive or after you back them up to another PC!

Think about everything you have on your computer: TONS of photos. ALL of your favorite music. Family videos and contact information.

How about work documents, important files, sensitive documents. Even your passwords, e-mails, favorite web pages... EVERYTHING!

After a crash, you can't get those photos back. The videos are now distant memories. And your passwords? Good luck remembering the ones you haven't had to type in for years.

BUT IF IT'S BACKED UP, YOU WON'T LOSE ANYTHING! PERIOD!

And with backing up this easy, you won't even have to think about it!

This DEFINES User Friendly!

Ultra Sleek, Ultra Secure, ULTRA FAST!

It looks, feels, and acts just like your standard flash drive (of course, standard flash drives can't hold a candle to this one) so you know it's gonna be easy and lightweight to move or store.

Plus, it has a durable connector so you know it's gonna stay safe from any potential accidents!

IT WORKS JUST LIKE A REGULAR FLASH DRIVE TOO!

That's right - Just drag and drop files to it and use it like any other flashdrive! Talk about the best of both worlds!!

Take it anywhere! Back up any PC or laptop! Use it for EVERYTHING!

And if you're looking for fast, this thing is gonna BLOW YOU AWAY!

This flash drive is part of the SanDisk "Cruzer Blade" series, their sleekest USB 2.0 drives out there.

Simply put? USB 2.0 has NEVER been better!

Last but not least: IT'S SECURE!

When you back up anything on this drive, you can choose to encrypt it and guard it with a password of your choice! Nobody but you or those you trust get access to YOUR files.

So all your tax, financial, and confidential documents? You can back them up too without worrying! FINALLY!

All those passwords on your PC don't mean a thing if you don't have SECURE backups.

But with this SanDisk, it's not a problem.

A Backup Drive For UNDER $19! WOW!

If you go anywhere to try and get a backup drive, you'll be looking $40 for the BARE MINIMUM! And those are bulky, heavy external hard drives that you really can't move or store.

And as a personal note, I kept two of these once we got 'em and I've got my home and work PC backed up on these flash drives. I love them already. They're that good!

You will NOT find a faster, more convenient backup drive out there for just $18.97 with FREE US SHIPPING anywhere else!

These are simply one of the coolest devices I've ever seen. PLEASE don't miss out on this deal. We only have so many and once they're gone... that's it.

Computers 101

Patricia from Nevada writes:

I am going to waste a little of your time to tell you why nothing you say is going to persuade me to like Win8 in any form. It was not designed for someone like me. It was designed for the person Microsoft wants me to be, or thinks I should be. It does what Microsoft wants it to not what I want it to.

I use my computer for correspondence, accounting, finances, taxes, etc., with a bit of shopping, e-mail, and reading the news. I am advised Office 2013 is mostly web-based, with some kind of family subscription plan. What family? I would be the only user. I don't use the cloud because I don't trust it. I don't collaborate. I don't share anything. I have no shared or public folders or files, and I never will. I don't listen to music, or the radio. I don't watch movies or television. I don't stream anything and don't plan to. I don't use Skype. I don't play games. I don't take, edit or share pictures or video. I don't have any "My Pictures" or "My Videos" or "My Movies." I don't need to see the weather because I live in the Las Vegas Valley where it doesn't change much. I am a very private person. I have no social media accounts and don't want any. I use a keyboard. Period. I have a form of dyslexia, and I cannot learn to swipe, tap, squeeze, flap, whatever. (I can't use a mouse, either.)

So, when the sad day arrives that I have no alternative to Win8, I will be spending my first weeks with it trying to figure out how to strip out all the stuff I don't want, don't need, cannot use and won't use, and then finding 3rd-party utilities that will make me a computer I want.

Patricia, I love a challenge. And although nothing I can say can make anyone love a particular operating system, I do think you have some misconceptions about Windows 8 and Office 2013. But let me play devil's advocate (Microsoft being the devil in this case.)

You can use Windows 8 for Word Processing and Accounting the same way you use previous versions of Windows. The Office 2013 interface is a little different, but certainly familiar. There is an Office 365 subscription plan available (that makes Office available on up to 5 devices), but you can still purchase a single use, one computer copy if you choose. And you don't have to use the Internet with Office 365 if you don't choose to.

On The Move

Organize Facebook Pages With Lists

Facebook can seem a little disorganized at times, especially if you're trying to keep track of numerous friends, family, bands, shows, businesses and more. While friends and family appear in your news feed, you might be missing out on important updates from your favorite pages. Facebook changed the way page updates appear in your news feed, resulting in few, if any, updates. You could follow each individual page or you can create organized lists to easily view just the pages you want.

Lists were created to help you organize your friends and family and work as mini news feeds with just the people you want included. However, you can use the same feature to keep track of businesses, bands, authors, websites and more.

From your news feed page on Facebook, locate the Friends section on the left side of the screen.

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He had already brushed off once, so I really wasn't expecting it when he paused for a moment mid-stride and gave a giant shake! He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)

Winter in Bryce Canyon, Utah. It's cold. Like 20 degrees below zero, but it felt like more like forty below from an aggressive wind biting at your face. And I decide it might be fun to go out and shoot some star photos :) Fortunately, I had plenty of arctic gear with me and that made all the difference in the world. My hands were always cold from...
