In The News 02-28-2014 Tech Giants Form Mega-Lobby A group of businesses and organizations has banded together to form the WifiForward Coalition, a group that says it wants to find a solution to the WiFi spectrum crunch by finding more unlicensed spectrum to use. What it sounds like is they are creating an incredibly powerful group of lobbyists. The group lists its goals as protecting and strengthening existing unlicensed spectrum and freeing up new spectrum for a variety of frequencies. Among those on board are Microsoft, Google, Best Buy, the AMerican Lbrary Association, Comcast, Motorola and the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition. The group plans strong lobbying efforts in Washington. About 57% of all mobile data traffic in North America is currently carried by Wi-Fi, and by 2018 that figure is expected to increase to 64% according to figures from Cisco. For Google and Microsoft, improving Internet access through Wi-Fi allows more users to access their online services, such as Google search and Bing, thus driving more ad revenue. FireFox To Put Ads On Directory Tiles Mozilla Firefox has announced that it will start placing advertising content on the browser's new tabs page. Now, when you open a new tab in Firefox, you see a page like this: Soon you'll see sponsored content from advertisers among the choices. Mozilla isn't calling it advertising, instead the company calls it "an exploration to transform the user's content experience." which will offer "sponsored content from hand-picked partners to help support Mozilla's pursuit of our mission. Jeri from Wisconsin writes: I'm using windows live to download mail from my gmail account. Sometimes when I try to forward a message with embedded pictures, the message comes up that the pics can not be found and the recipient sees a grey box instead of the picture. If I forward the message directly from my gmail account, this doesn't happen. Help tips from your site and across the web don't address this problem with windows live. Is there are fix? thanks! Hello Jeri! In researching this problem, I found many posts, some ranging back in years, but no real good solution. It seems even Microsoft techs have not come up with a good answer. It could be an issue in the security settings in downloading email from Gmail to Live mail. It also appears that sometimes, it will put the images as a slide show, rather than embedded in the email, which if you are forwarding emails that have captions to the pictures, just doesn't work. If the images are hosted on a web server, it's possible that the link is not recognized when the message is downloaded or forwarded. Unfortunately, I haven't come across a good solution. Knock To Unlock LG's new LG G Pro 2 phone is what's called a phablet. At nearly 6″ it's a cross between a phone and a tablet and has some interesting new features. One of them is the Knock Code – a new kind of password that relies on a sequence of taps instead of a typed password to open your phone. It's an off shoot of LG's Knock On that lets you open up your phone with a tap instead a swipe. The Knock Code allows users to power on and unlock their G Pro 2 phones by tapping the screen using one of 86,367 possible knock combinations. The knock pattern can be entered on any area of the screen, even if the display is turned off and can be composed to a sequence between two to 8 taps. To learn more, click on WorldStart!
Where Do I Get News For My Android Tablet I just got a new Android tablet as a Mother's Day gift. My kids said it would be a great way to keep up with the news (They call me a news junkie) without having to turn my computer or TV on all the time, Where are the best places to find news that I don't have to pay for? There is a wide selection selection of news and information apps available for Android. Programs for tablets are called "apps" (short for applications), and the largest resource for Android apps is the Google Play Store. There are apps for every purpose you can imagine, and many of them are free. I'm going to highlight some free news apps you might want to try out. I'd start out by checking for your local newspaper. Many newspapers offer apps and a lot of them are free. Your paper may feature a link to their app on their website or search for it by name in the search box. Below is the app for my local paper. If there was a cost associated with the app, it would appear in the gray box. Since this is free, I can simply click INSTALL if I'd like the app and it will download and install on my tablet. Image Splitter Have you ever wanted to do some very simple edits to a photo? All you need is to crop or resize it? Or maybe convert it or split it? Well now you can do that easily at this site for free! And it's so easy to do. Just start by clicking the field that says "click here to select your image" this will open a file browser that will let you select the image from your computer. After that just click the blue Upload Image button. Have an image you want to upload from a URL? You can do that too! Just click Upload by URL to reveal where you would paste in the URL of your image. After you've completed that step you're taken to the editing interface where you can navigate between editing tabs to create the result you want. Your option are Convert and Resize, Split Image, and Crop Image. Make your edits and then select what format you want to save your file as. Easy as pie, right?
