Facebook Gives Up On E-mail

Social Media giant Facebook has decided to give up on the idea of Facebook e-mail. Facebook e-mail addresses were introduced in 2010, but never really caught on. E-mails send to a facebook.com address went directly into the user's message box. It's not like the company is giving up on the messaging game. They just spent $19 billion dollars to purchase WhatsApp.

SkyDrive Is Now OneDrive

Microsoft SkyDrive will now be known as OneDrive. The company was forced to change the name of their cloud service because of a lawsuit filed by the UK's Sky Network. As park of a settlement, Microsoft paid the network a nice chunk of change and agreed to change the name of their service. This was a major hassle for the tech giant, since SkyDrive was the centerpiece of their drive towards become a devices and services company and is an integral feature of Windows 8 and the Office 365 subscription plan.

Along with the name change comes some new features, including automatic camera backup for Android, easier video sharing and a plan where they offer you up to 5 GB of free storage space if you refer your friends to the service.

Smart Car Allows Deliveries To Your Trunk

Volvo is testing a smart car that would use GPS to allow delivery service to bring packages to your car. The system would then unlock your trunk to allow the delivery to be placed inside and then lock it again.

Volvo demonstrated the system at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The digital key system would allow parcel companies to notify you via an app that you had a delivery and you would then authorize the company to drop the package off at your vehicle's location.

The delivery option would be a feature of Volvo On Call, an app that allows drivers to heat or cool their car, check its location or even check the gas level using a phone or tablet.

Volvo says of the 100 people they tested this service out with, the majority liked it.

Computers 101

Alan from Dartford, Kent, England, United Kingdom. writes:

Hi I hope you can help me solve a problem with my computer, below I think I have supplied you with all the information you requested, if I have missed anything out please let me know and I will endeavour to try and retrieve and send it to you:

Make: Hewlett Packard
Model: HP G56 Notebook PC

Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1

Installed memory (RAM): 3.00GB (2.74 GB usable)
Local Disk (C :) 217GB free of 281 GB

The problem I have is with System Restore, I can create a restore point manually and one is created automatically but I am not able to restore my computer back to a previous restore point, I have tried several restore points but get the same result. The computer goes through the operation but after completion I get a message as listed below:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's file and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source; %SystemRoot%\registration Destination: ComPlusStaging,
I have tried two recommendations as stated below:

1) Start computer up and perform the System Restore in safe mode.

2) a. Click Start, All programs and then Accessories. Right Click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
B. In the Command Prompt window type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) and then press Enter.
C. After the scan has completed, close the command prompt window, restart the computer and check for the issue.

Neither of these recommendations solved the problem, my computer did get a bad virus on it back in December 2012 which was removed successfully by a professional in a computer shop but as I have not had to perform a System Restore before now I do not know if it worked before or the virus disabled it. I hope you know how and would be gratefully if you could tell me step-by-step how to cure this problem.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Alan.

First, are you having a problem with your computer that you need to restore to a previous state, or are certain programs not working? I am not sure why you need to use the system restore, as you don't mention what is causing you to need to restore. However, in researching the issue, I found a few things that may be of help.

First, make sure you check your disk space in your restore options. The slider should be at about 20% under the Create a Restore Point options.

Another major issue I saw when looking into this is making sure to disable all your Antivirus programs when attempting to use a restore point. One that especially caused problems was Norton Security. Be certain to turn off Norton Tamper Protection on the product as it will block all restore attempts. Be sure that when you are done with your restore, you do enable your Antivirus again.

As I am not sure what is causing you to need the system restore option, but another thing you could do is to boot up to the Last Known Good Configuration, generally by pressing the F8 key at start up. Or you could attempt a clean boot to see if you can troubleshoot programs that may be interfering with your system restore.

If you have a serious problem with the computer and can't get system restore to work after trying all these, the best solution might be a reinstallation of Windows using your installation CD.

On The Move

Cindy from New Orleans writes:

Since upgrading to iOS7 on my iPhone 4, I have not been able to download new Apps or update existing Apps from the App Store. A dot appears and if I press it then a circle begins to turn (which I interpret as the download) and then a cloud with a down-pointing arrow shows up beside the App. There is no icon on my desktop for that program. What does that mean and where are my Apps going?

Looking around, I see that a few other people have experience this issue as well. From what you describe, I think your apps are successfully downloading. The cloud with the down-pointing arrow signifies that your app has been successfully purchased and is now available in your cloud.

One possibility is that your app is there and you just can't see it. It may just be on another page.

Previously you were limited to nine apps in a tab, but that's all changed with iOS 7.

From The Archives

Ken from Greer,S.C. writes: You guys and gals at World Start are great when it comes to electronics so I hope you can answer my question. I like to share videos (like YouTube) on Facebook and especially in email. When I click on a video link I receive via email it goes straight to big screen and begins playing. When I share from YouTube it goes to the YouTube page with the smaller version. How do I get the link to go to full screen and auto play?

Why thanks! We're blushing a little right now. Ken, I love sharing videos from YouTube as well. A group of friends and I get together on Facebook once a week to share music videos from the 1980s.

There are several ways to share videos from you tube. You can choose email, social media, embedding the video on a website or simply copy and paste the link.

When you share a video from YouTube by clicking on e-mail, many times (but not all depending on your e-mail program), it will show up embedded in the video and you can watch it right from your e-mail.

Head on over to WorldStart to learn how to share YouTube videos full screen.

Dog Breed Identification

How well do you know the different breeds of dogs? I feel fairly confident that if it isn't a newer designer breed that I could guess correctly what kind of dog it is. I've always had an affinity for knowing dog breeds, it's just the sort of information that gets stuck in my head and is easily accessible.

Navigation is easy! When you get to the site, and are ready, click the Start button. This will start the clock and offer you the quiz options. There are fifteen questions and you have up to fifteen minutes to complete the quiz.

If you don't want to start right away you can always check out the sample questions below the start button so that you're prepared for what the quiz has to offer up as questions.

When you're done it will offer you a Score Report, that will show you how well you did. I got 100% but there were some tricky ones I had to think about.

You can then share your results over Facebook, Twitter, or by E-mail.

How many dog breeds can you identify correctly?

This is Carter Shield's Cabin in the Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove area. I snagged this shot one spring evening when I was out looking for bear.
