In The News: 10-18-2013 Twitter Will Now Change Your TV Channel Twitter has announced a partnership with Comcast that will allow Xfinity TV customers to change the channel, set a DVR or play a show On Demand by sending a Tweet. The service is called See It and Twitter says it is designed to integrate with video distribution partners, TV networks and websites.
The goal of the service is to make Twitter your new TV remote, which could finally be a way to monetize the popular social media service. While Twitter has 200 million monthly active users, the company has yet to turn a profit. Microsoft Awards $100,000 For Discovery Of Exploit Microsoft has put its money where its mouth is by awarding a $1000,000 to James Forshaw of Context Information Security for finding an exploit in Windows 8.1.
The company had offered up a bounty to anyone who could discover security flaws in the operating system and they paid up when Forshaw found a defense circumvention technique. We may never know exactly what the flaw is, as Microsoft isn't going to want to discuss it until they fix the issue. Straighten Up & Stop iSlouching Researchers are warning that slumping over smartphones and games can damage your spine. Dr. Matt Herba says that children are reporting neck problems from what he calls iSlouching and this damage could be permanent. He says the slouching can add up to 10 pounds of pressure to your spine. The solution? Less time on the phone and remembering to keep good posture, even when you're engrossed in a game or a conversation. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Your programs won't stop working. But, there's a very big catch. There will be no more security updates from Microsoft. So there will be no fixes for new threats. Third-party security services are saying they cannot promise to keep XP safe after Microsoft stops supplying updates.
This will make XP systems a prime target for hackers. You could choose to stay off the Internet entirely (no web surfing and no e-mail) and not add any new files to your computer, just in case they've been infected. But that's really not practical. XP faithful shouldn't feel safe with their systems. Extended support ends for XP on April 8, 2014. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
Windows 8 Search - Don't Overlook This Powerful Feature A lot of people love to hate Windows 8. They miss the old-school Start Button, but the powerful and convenient search feature in Windows 8 does everything that the Start Menu did and a little bit more. Let's check it out. To activate the Search Charm, just swipe your finger or stylus from right to left on the right side of the screen or point to the upper-right of the screen with your mouse pointer and move the pointer down. You'll get a ribbon with Search, Share and Start. Select Search by either tapping or clicking on the magnifying glass icon.
You'll see the Search Charm, which allows you to find things on your computer, in the Windows Store and on the Internet from one location.
Let's say we type the word "Word" into the search box. You'll see that there are 2 results in Apps, 17 results in Settings and 2616 results in Files.
Let's take a look at what each of those mean. Apps replaces what would be called Programs in previous versions of Windows. So, if you want to open any program or application in Windows 8, type it in the search box and select Apps.
When I search "Word" in Apps, over to the right of the screen, the results will be displayed. Here, I see Word 2013 and WordPad. If I click or tap on either of these icons, I will open the program.
Now if I click or tap on Settings, I will see a different set of results.
In results under Settings, I'll see options to change passwords, autocorrect words, enlarge the size of text. All settings that have to do with "words."
If we select Files, we'll see another set of results.
These results include documents and pictures.
You can also search for things on the Internet. If you choose Store, you can look for Apps in the Windows App Store.
Here I have results for Apps that contain the "Word" in the name.
If I choose the Internet Explorer Icon, I'll get search results for "Word" from Bing. Weather will show places with "Word" in the name and People Will show show Contacts with "Word" in their names.
You can even search within Apps. Here, I've selected the Cocktail Flow app.
I've typed in "martini."
Here are my results.
If those results aren't what I'm looking for, I can simply tap Internet Explorer and get search results for Martinis instantly.
All in all, an exceptionally handy way to find things all in one place. It's really much quicker than the old Start Menu. So, if you have Windows 8, make sure to take full advantage. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Nick from Newburgh, NY writes: I have XP and my Hibernate selection has disappeared. A friend says I really don't need it as there is little difference between Hibernate and Stand-By. Is he correct? Something tells me there is a difference. The "Hibernate" option disappeared after the Service Pack 2 upgrade, but that doesn't mean it isn't available anymore. To get it back, click the "Turn Off Computer" button on the Start menu as normal to bring up the list of shut down options. While the list of three buttons are displayed on the screen, tap and hold down the "Shift" key, which will change "Standby" to "Hibernate" most of the time, anyway. If the Standby button doesn't change, you'll need to modify an option in your computer's power settings.
If the Hibernate button won't appear when you hold down the Shift key, click "Cancel" and then open the "Control Panel" in the Start menu. Double-click the "Power Options" icon.
In the "Power Options" window, navigate to the "Hibernate" tab, and then click the check box labeled "Enable Hibernation." Click the "Apply" button at the bottom of the window and you will now have the ability to change the Standby button to Hibernate by holding down the Shift key.
But what exactly does Hibernate do once you've got the ability to use it, and how is it different from regular Standby? Both are designed to consume less energy so you can walk away from your computer while not actively using it without having to actually shut down Windows XP completely. The key differences between the two options are just how much power is being used, and where your data is saved. Standby mode is faster to recover from than Hibernate, but it still uses a small amount of power. While that may not particularly matter on a desktop setup, if you are using a laptop eventually the battery will die if you leave it in Standby without being plugged in. Hibernate uses essentially no power, and it's important to note that in most cases scheduled tasks (such as an anti-virus hard drive scan or a disk defragment) won't kick in and start running while your computer is in Hibernate mode. The other primary difference is that Standby saves whatever programs and files that are currently open to your computer's RAM, not to the hard drive. RAM is cleared out when the computer shuts down, so anything on your computer will not be saved if it shuts down for some reason, such as if your power goes out or the laptop's battery dies. Hibernate, on the other hand, saves everything directly to the hard drive, meaning it will be much less likely you'll lose your data if the computer shuts off. ~ Ty Arthur Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Brian from Vermont asks: I went to message a friend on Facebook the other day, and all it would come up with was a chat window! What gives? I'm not even logged into Facebook chat, and I'm really missing the standard Facebook conversation window I've always used in the past. Help a dude out!!
Yeah, that's a frustrating one, Brian, and it's happened to me in the past, too. Sometimes, for some odd reason, Facebook decides to use a chat window for a regular old message instead of the tried-and-true conversation window, but thankfully it's pretty easy to get back to the way things used to be. Want more? Check out WorldStart! -- Help! Notes Disappeared In iOS 7 Update Anne writes: Hi another question regarding IOS7 update. What happened to my Notes on my iPhone??? I used the notes frequently and had several stored. How come this wasn't addressed when updating? Can I get them back? Thanks
Anne, Notes should still be there. You'll find it under Utilities with your Calculator and Contacts.
However, one possibility is that your Notes are there, but you can't see them. Here's why... Just click WorldStart to learn more! Michelle from SC writes: I had to have my computer reformatted last month. Now when I do a disk cleanup it shows "previous windows installation(s)" (34.6 GB) as one of the option boxes for the disk cleanup. Is it safe to tick this box or should I leave it alone? When you format your system and upgrade from an old version of Windows to a more recent version (e.g Windows XP to Windows 7), Windows stores the previous system files in the "Windows.old" folder. When you perform a custom installation of Windows 7 on a drive but do not format that system partition, the old system folder is automatically renamed from "Windows" to "Windows.old". The result is nothing but two folders (Windows and Windows.old), as shown in the following example screenshot:
The answer to your question is Yes, you can safely get rid of the Windows.old folder, provided you are completely sure that you won't need the older settings, program files or your documents. It is a good idea to open the "Documents and settings" folder under "Windows.old" and recheck your My documents, My pictures and other important system folders. If you are sure that you have already backed up everything from your old operating system to the new one, there is no reason why you should keep the "Windows.old" folder and waste precious disk space. Head on over to WorldStart for more of this helpful tip. -- Move Your Router, Improve Your WiFi If the WiFi signal in your home isn't that great and there doesn't seem to be any technical problem with your router, computer or WiFi provider, it might just be where you have the router located in your house.
If you position your router next to an outside wall, you'll send part of your signal outside and make it weaker in the rest of your home. Think location, location, location Place the device so it is centrally located for the devices that will be accessing the signal. I know routers aren't the prettiest things in the world. But hiding it in the basement with the cat's litterbox can weaken the signal. This is a case where you should choose function over form. Just click WorldStart for the rest of this tip! Flipped Classroom This is an interesting infographic about a different model of teaching called the Flipped Classroom. Now, I know this debate can get contentious, so I just want to say up front that I don't think either is absolutely 100% the correct way to teach. There are lots of different kinds of learners out there and no one model will encompass the best model of learning for everyone. It's just interesting to see information laid out in this type of binary (at the beginning of the infographic) and see possible options to explore in the classroom. For example, I actually do really well as a student in the Sage on the Stage model, as an introvert group work and activities are very frustrating to me. One of the biggest transitions I'm making in my graduate study is learning to participate in seminar style classes. And I know that online interaction can be sketchy even when participation points are assigned from online classes I've taken in my undergraduate study. So those are just a few flaws that can exist in the model being proposed. But I still think it is interesting to think about how technology and online content can enhance and improve education. The infographic walks you through education model, how it came to be, what drives it, and how it looks in implementation. So check it out for yourself, and see what you think about this model of learning! http://www.knewton.com/flipped-classroom/ ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Love Meow Do you love cats? I know I do. I didn't at first, I grew up in a house with dogs and naturally became a dog person. But now I have a special place in my heart for my kitty friends as well. Currently we have four cats, our eldest is named Loki and he thinks he is a dog (he comes when he's called, listens to commands, plays fetch, and loves our dogs). He was the cat that stole my heart and converted me to both a dog and a cat person. Needless to say when I saw this site I knew I had to share it with you! To learn more about the sites goals and creation check out the About page. There you'll meet the cats that run the joint and their human servant Amy. On the main page the first thing I noticed as I scrolled down the page were the bevvy of cat videos! I also really love the sites promotion of adopting cats and showing off rescues. WHATEVER you want to call it... it's the down-right most incredible flashlight you'll EVER use! Think of ALL the problems you've ever had with your current flashlight: The light is too dull. High watts + Brilliant Lumens = A flashlight that's gonna let you see ANYTHING, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME! You're gonna get light that shines HUNDREDS of feet away! This is NOT your everyday kinda device! Save A TON on Batteries! Right off the bat, this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. The WORST part of flashlights is that if you can't find batteries, you're outta luck! Or even worse, dropping HUNDREDS on batteries over the years! That gets expensive! This one has a wall charger & a car charger! SWEET! No matter where you go, you can power this baby up without having to drop an extra fortune! You get HOURS of lighting with each full charge, too! Three Modes - Three Reasons To Love This! It's got more than just brightness! Three different modes open up TONS of utility! Press that button once: You get the low-intensity beam. That gives you a softer light that lets you see what you need to see without wakin' up the neighborhood! Press it twice: Now we're cookin'! This is the high-intensity beam that you've been dreaming of! Do NOT look directly at this thing! Shine it across the yard, down the road, or over the field! You're gonna see EVERYTHING! Here's where it gets cool: The THIRD press gives you the self-defense STROBE effect! It's bright as heck and if you shine this directly at someone it is extremely disorienting! Don't Forget About That ADJUSTABLE Focus! I've NEVER understood why this isn't standard on every flashlight! It's so essential, but only the really quality ones seem to have it! With the simple twist of the focusing head, you can turn a wide, flooding light into a sharp, focused one. That means you have the option between illuminating an entire yard or hitting a specific area with a beam as bright as the Sun! And the adjustable focus works with all the different available lighting modes too! Seriously, this thing has it ALL!
This thing is HANDS DOWN the most reliable, durable, brilliant little flashlight you'll EVER use. Once you have this in your hands, you'll never find another flashlight that compares!
