| In The News 11-22-2013 Facebook Edits Privacy Language After Backlash Facebook has made a change to the language of its privacy policy regarding teen users after a public backlash. The previous policy seemed to assume that all kids using Facebook had discussed the terms of use on the site and its implications with their parents. In a blog post, Chief Privacy Officer Erin Egan thanked people for their feedback and said the company had made "clarifying edits" to the policy. She also assured people that nothing about that update had changed their advertising policies and practices and encouraged parents to become familiar with the site's privacy policies and discuss them with their children. PlayStation 4 Off To a Big Start Sony's PlayStation 4 started off with a bang, selling more than 1 million units in just a day. Fans lined up on Friday night to buy the unit. Though there have been some complaints of malfunctioning units. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said, "Sales remain very strong in North America, and we expect continued enthusiasm as we launch the PlayStation 4 in Europe and Latin America on November 29." Microsoft, whose Xbox One launches Friday, responded in an unexpectedly pleasant manner by Tweeting "Congratulations on your launch, Sony." Google Vows To Crack Down On Child Porn Google chief Eric Schmidt outlined what the company is doing to help stop child pornography. In an article published in the Daily Mail, he said that the company had fined tuned Google Search to prevent links to such material from appearing in results and that they are rolling out these changes to 150 languages. They will also issue warning to people making certain search queries, explaining that these images are illegal and directing them where to find help. Illegal images will be given a unique digital fingerprint, enabling computers to identify those photos. If one had a computer hared drive failure, hijacking, or etc, why couldn't one take the external hard drive and install it in the computer? Actually Ron, that's a great idea. Now you can't just install just any external hard drive in a computer. You'd need to use a drive that's compatible with your computer. You can purchase an enclosure that will turn any hard drive into an external hard drive for less than $50. So you could choose to have the exact same drive that's installed in your computer or if you have an extra drive, you can re-purpose. Every time I go to to any of these systems I need to open first to see what is inside since I don't remember what each has. Only to get it home and discover that it came already loaded with w8 and with no re-installation media. The only option Ive found so far is to make a mirror image of my system but this requires another terabite hard drive! Microsoft offers a free 'update' to w8.1. But this is done online and if you choose to keep it will wipe out W8. As usual Microsoft gives light info which brings up more ?s than answers. As when suggesting you back up your files before updating to w8.1 I'm unsure if flash drives or disks are useable. And last but not least Lenovo has its own security partition on the hard drive to reset to factory let alone Lenovo apps and programs. Lenovo's web site is no help there. I like W8 but wonder where and how to do things like partition my hard drive to install other operating systems. Or even duplicates with different additions for different uses. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Judith, the first think you need to do is take a breath. Updating to Windows 8.1 is the same thing as say switching from XP to 8. You really aren't getting a while new operating system, you're just adding an update to Windows 8. While it's not a bad idea to back up files like documents and photographs before running the 8.1 update, the 8.1 update will not wipe out the programs or files installed on 8.
You can actually still use your computer while the update is installing. The update takes a few hours to complete, but you won't notice any really drastic changes between 8 and 8.1. There's really no need to worry about how partition your hard drive or installing other operating systems. If you'd like to back up files like music, documents and photographs before doing the upgrade, that's fine. Actually, all these files should be backed up anyway. You can use flash drives or CDs or, even more conveniently, a cloud service to back up your files. Is A Virus Freezing My Phone? Considering how dependent many of us our on our Smartphones, having one freeze up can really ruin your day. Here are a few ways to troubleshoot. One possible cause, a virus attached to a new app. Here's how to find the culprit. BUGS & VIRUSES If you think the phone has a bug or a virus, delete all the newer apps you downloaded and see if your phone still hangs. If it does, then it's bound to be a virus. The result is a slow phone or a phone that frequently freezes on you. When this happens, the best way is to factory reset the phone. If you have an Android phone, just go to Settings/Backup and reset/Factory Data Reset. This can vary from phone to phone, so you may need to check the manufacturer's website. BUT FIRST, BACK UP Before you reset your phone, make sure you have backed up all your contacts, SMSs, pictures, audios and videos. You can do this through your data cable using Samsung Kies or through Wi-Fi using an app like Air Droid. A data cable is best if you have large amounts of data to transfer. I would also suggest you to take a local backup of your contacts, preferably to your Outlook Express. Switching from a Windows PC to a Mac can be a great experience but it can also be very frustrating. One possible cause of websites not working on a Mac is by default Mac does not include Adobe Flash Player which is required by a lot of websites but is known to cause some system instability.
