Quick Tip

Kitty from Pittsburgh, Texas

What is cross-site scripting? Some times (usually when taking a survey)I get the message Internet explorer has modified this page to help prevent cross-site scripting. Is this something I should be concerned about? Oh, I am 66 and you guys and gals have taught me how to do anything that I need to do on my computer. If its not in your newsletter (am a premium member) I can always find the answer on your web site. Love ya all.

Thanks Kitty! We love our readers. Cross-site scripting is a security vulnerability sometimes found in web applications. It can be used by attackers to bypass access controls. They can be petty nuisances or pose major security issues.

Some times attacks are disguised in the form of things like surveys, so it's a good thing that Internet Explorer is preventing cross-site scripting. A good Internet security program, proper security settings on your browser and caution on your part should be able to protect you from these attacks.

Computers 101

Paul from Cairns, Australia writes:

Not so much a question as a comment. I read all the quick tips with interest and learn a lot from questions I would like to ask. In particular all the comments about the demise of XP. All the issues concerning it's demise (apart from Microsoft's financial ones) relate to security. My old XP computer is not hooked up the internet and never will be. I use it for word docs, spreadsheets and Photoshop etc and share an external hard drive with my Windows 7 computer if I need to up/download something. It is incredibly freeing not to have to worry about viruses or spyware etc and just get on with what I am doing.

Actually, Paul that's a great idea. I think I've mentioned it in passing before in other articles, but never gotten into the idea in-depth. If you have another device for going online, there's no reason not to keep your XP computer in use off-line. Windows XP isn't going to stop working when Microsoft stops doing security updates.

It wouldn't be difficult to use another computer, a tablet or even a smartphone for your e-mail and internet browsing. I would be cautious about putting new files on your XP computer. If you have a Windows 7 or 8 computer with up-to-date security, you can check files there first before moving them onto your XP computer. There is always the possibility that someone could come up with a new exploit for XP that might sneak past security updates for Windows 7 and 8. Creating and taking files off you XP computer is much safer than loading anything onto your XP computer.

The idea that having an "unplugged" computer can pick up your productivity, is a valid one. In fact, there are several apps for writers that prevent you from accessing the Internet while in use. And an XP computer would certainly work fine for the tasks you've described.

But anyone who makes the decision needs to stick with it. No using your XP computer to hop on the Internet for just a minute or two when no other connection is available.

Cloud Computing: 21 Rapid-Fire Facts

Cloud storage solves several problems most small business owners don't know they have. It frees up hard drive space, allows accessibility from any device at any location and eliminates the need to conduct time-consuming backups. The disadvantages include security, reliability and speed. Information that travels through the Internet is susceptible to hackers if you don't have the right levels of security in place. Firewalls, encryption and added levels of personal security such as identity theft protection protect the information so small business owners can continue to reap the benefits.

Here are 21 facts about cloud computing for small businesses:

From The Archives

Bill from LA. writes:

Can you mix hard drives (SATA and IDE) one for the OS and the other for your backup if you have the proper connections? Or is it better to have two of the same kind in your desktop computer?

Answer:

For many years the standard for hard drives was IDE, which uses a P-ATA connector and ribbon cable to connect the hard drive. In 2003, the SATA standard was created, and by 2008 a vast majority of computer drives were connected by SATA instead of IDE. The SATA interface offers faster hard drive support, thinner easier-to-route cables and native hot-plug support.

our question on mixing and matching these styles of drives is a complex one. The simple answer is...

10 Cave Photography Tips

Total darkness, the drone of stealthy, sleeping insects, the smell of dampness and rock, and you want your camera to show the world how this looks? Cave photography is not as easy as it sounds, but with the following guidelines, it can very well be.

All you have to do is this:

1.Handle with Care

image

En route to the caves you want to explore and photograph, you might have to walk on two legs or even four. In such cases, use a backpack to carry your accoutrements. Protect the camera because even a slight fall on a rock can reduce it to smithereens. Carry it in a waist belt with a pocket and keep an eye on it as this pouch will prove indispensable. There may even be a sudden downpour when you cannot afford to expose your camera, so you'll be glad you have it. Also make sure you keep a cloth handy once you enter the cave, because water can drip from the ceiling. Carry a soft cloth to keep wiping out the moisture and place to over the camera while shooting if need be. The water might have several undesirable minerals.

Still Pluggin' That Camera Into Your Computer?

Say It Ain't So!

Join Us In THIS Century Doin' It The EASY Way!

It's SO SIMPLE! POP, STICK, PLUG and PLAY

LOL - You're still hooking your devices up to your computer!

Know what I saw the other day? I actually saw a guy hooking his camera up to his computer to download photos! Helllloooooo - why on earth would you NOT use a card reader?

Anyone who's ever used a card reader to transfer their photos from a memory card to a computer NEVER goes back to the old, "Golly gee, let me hook my camera up to the computer" method!

I mean, why would you? Compared to using a card reader, attaching the camera to the computer is an amazing hassle - you need to find the stupid cords, make sure the stupid battery is charged (or worse, you need to have the camera plugged in - and find the cord for that), and get the whole stupid setup to work with the chintzy software they gave you!

That's NUTS! It's like riding a unicycle with a flat tire to the mall instead of taking a car!

What's wrong with you?

STOP torturing yourself already!

OK, since I tend to short circuit anytime I see someone transferring photos with a camera instead of a card reader, I thought, hey, what the heck - let's solve that little problem for all our subscribers - and do it on the cheap!

So by using a surprisingly small combination of threats, begging, and blackmail, I was able to snag an amazing deal on a Digital Concepts USB 2.0 SD/SDHC/MMC Card Reader/Writer!

Sure, I may end up spending a few nights at the county jail (something about extortion being just south of legal), but YOU snag an amazing card reader for just $1.97! Yeah I know - it's insane!

This little card reader is going to brighten your photographic life in ways you, quite frankly, never thought of. When you discover how much better photo transfers can really be, you'll be pounding your head into the wall crying...

"Oh the wasted years!"

How's it work? Simply pop the SD (or MMC or SDHC) card out of your camera, slip it into this reader, and plug the whole shebang into your computer.

That's it!

A window will open with all your camera's photos on it - just drag and drop to the folder of your choice, or use your photo software to import your images.

Heck - it even comes with a cord in case you have one of those "hard to reach" USB ports (I hate those - but kudos to manufacturer for thinking about it)!

See? No cables, no battery worries, no power connections - NO HASSLE!

I shoot gobs of photos and let me tell ya - only crazy people still hook their camera up to their PC! Join us here in this century and grab this killer card reader for just $1.97!!

PS - This bad boy will jump back up in price Wednesday (a price that would still embarrass the big box stores), so make sure you RACE to the site and grab this today!

Death From Above

I really love Coyotes. I know, not everyone is a fan, but I can't help it - they're one of my favorite animals. I think the reason for this favoritism might be the aerial pounce they sometimes use when pursuing prey. Their approach is decidedly cat-link in its execution. For example... I discovered this Coyote on our way back from lunch. I spotted him and quickly pulled over, hoping he'd …(More)
