Amazon Looks At Drone Delivery

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos says the mega-online retailer has been experimenting with flying drones to deliver packages right to your door. The devices, called "octopters" are expected to be operational within five years. However, the company still has to clear it the Federal Aviation Authority.

Bezos says he hopes the drones will replace postal carriers and delivery people and be able to deliver items up to five pounds right to your door within 30 minutes. The drones would use GPS tracking to find your address and be totally automated.

Of course this is all pending FAA approval and assuming customers are comfortable with the idea of drone delivery.

Nokia-Microsoft Deal Gets Government Approval

Microsoft's plan to buy Nokia's devices and services business for $7 billion dollars has gotten a stamp of approval from the Department of Justice. Nokia stockholders approved the deal in November. But the companies still need approval from the European Union.

This would be a boost to Microsoft's goal of becoming a company focused on devices and services. The two companies have worked together on the Windows Phone since 2011.

Black Friday Online Sales Total $3 Billion

Not everyone was standing in line at midnight at a big box store to score deals on Black Friday. Shoppers spent more than $3 billion dollars shopping on the Internet on the day after Thanksgiving. Adobe counted 400 million hits to websites as savvy online shoppers looked for deals.

Nearly 25% of those sales came from mobile devices.

Malware. It's everywhere.

It seems like whatever you do nowadays puts you at risk for getting infected.

The good news is, almost everyone has an anti-virus now... the bad news? That's not enough.

Sure, viruses are bad. But malware is downright NASTY! A virus might try to harm your computer, but spyware and trojans? They can steal your information.

That means more than a damaged PC... now we're talking your identity... your finances... everything!

But it's not all bad... because we found the superhero software that's gonna keep your PC pristine and malware free!

GOOD!

Malwarebytes works WITH your anti-virus to fill in all those gaps it doesn't cover.

Viruses and malware are NOT the same. Your anti-virus might stop your PC from getting damaged, but most online threats don't wanna damage your PC... they want to steal from it!

Infected computers are one of the biggest reasons identity theft even occurs! Spyware will track your passwords, malware will redirect you to fake versions of the websites you trust, and adware will cover your web browser from top-to-bottom in ads for all KINDS of junk!

Malwarebytes Pro stops them dead in their tracks. It does it all: preventing, protecting, and disinfecting! If you have malware, this software will remove it. And if you have this software... you won't have to worry about removing ANYTHING ever again!

Scan - Quarantine - Remove!

Three easy and completed automated steps that restore YOUR computer back to perfect health! If you have malware infections, it'll find 'em, round 'em up, and get rid of 'em once and for all!

Talk about easy! You don't have to be a computer genius to use this!

Not only does it check your PC when you need it to, it actively defends you to stop the malware from infecting you in the first place!

You get it all! Malicious website protection, ultra-fast scans, the real-time protection, and Malwarebytes even has safeguards against infections that try to remove it!

This is the REAL DEAL!

If you think this sounds great, I'm gonna repeat myself a bit here:

IT'S A LIFETIME LICENSE!

Your anti-virus might charge you monthly or yearly... THIS WON'T! It's only $26.97 and you get constantly updating protection for LIFE! YES!

And if you get a new computer, you can even move the license over to that one!

Don't leave your security to chance. There's never been a better deal on anti-malware... if you miss this, you're gonna be kickin' yourself when your PC gets infected!

Computers 101

Virgil from Falconer, New York asks:

What happens to an EMail which I receive and discard as SPAM? Is it buried (filed) somewhere in my computer, is it totally obliterated, is it rejected and returned to the sender? Does the sender of the spam KNOW that I have rejected his message as spam?

Virgil, marking e-mail as Spam (or as not Spam or not junk) is a way of teaching the filter on your account which messages you want to see. Internet service providers usually have a filtering system in place to weed out junk. They usually scan e-mails for certain words or phrases and assign a point value based on the content. They also look for messages coming from suspicious IP addresses. Of course that won't catch all Spam and sometimes blocks messages you want to see.

If multiple users mark an item as Spam, the filter learns that e-mails from that sender or with that topic are likely Spam and then filters them out in the future. If you're using an e-mail client, the e-mails are usually treated as if they had been deleted and the trash has been emptied. Usually when you delete Spam from an online mailbox, it's deleted forever. That means you can't retrieve them. (At least not reliably and easily. Nothing is ever really gone from a computer unless the drive is scrubbed.)

E-mails really can't be "returned to sender." You will get a bounce notice if your email never arrives to the recipient's mail server and sometimes that contains a copy of the e-mail – but the message you sent doesn't actually come back to you.

If you have blocked someone's address, they may get a notice that the message is undeliverable. Otherwise, if a message goes into your Spam filter, the person who sent it may never know.

That's why it's important to occasionally check the Spam and Junk folders from your ISP. Even if you download your e-mail using an e-mail client like Outlook, messages could still reside in a Spam folder that you never see in your online mailbox. I once missed a very important business e-mail that way. My online inbox Spam folder contained 400 pieces of absolute junk and three messages from someone who wanted to interview me for a job. Not cool.

Filter are imperfect, so it's important to help them along by teaching them which messages you want and which ones you'd like blocked.

On The Move

Jacki from Utah writes:
I need something to put a TON of pics OFF of my P.C. onto something else. What can I put a TON pics onto???? (like some kind of an external drive or something??)
I'm not sure what you mean by a TON of pics, but here are some options. You could choose a large flash drive. You should be able to get 64 GB for less than $60.
You might also consider an external hard drive. You should be able to find plenty of space in the $50 to $100 range depending on size.

Backing Up Contacts And Emails

Betty from Southern California writes:

My hard disk recently crashed. Fortunately I had several different back-up systems in place so I lost none of my documents, pictures, and music. I did lose all my email contacts and saved email. I use Outlook 2010. Under my Outlook Inbox I had many folders into which I would drag the email messages I wanted to save. I had assumed that these would be in my documents directory, and would be saved with my other files and backed up. I now know that is wrong, and that my files are gone. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again – but can't find where Outlook saves my contacts and saved emails! Can you tell me where to look? What is the best way to save these items?

Opening The Export Wizard

Considering how important email communication has become, both for personal and work use, it's a strange oversight that the Microsoft Windows backup program doesn't automatically save your Outlook messages or contacts by default. If you have a large number of contacts and important messages that need to always be available, even in the event of a hard drive crash, there is a way to backup this data, however.

Amanda's Coolsite

A List Of Books

My friends on Facebook keep sending me these list challenges to discover how many books I've read, so after taking a few, I wondered if there was a site that combined multiple lists to get a more accurate idea of how many books I've read. Heh, and to challenge all of them to take the time and list what they've read, so we can compare.

I found this site which combines several Top 100 Books lists and combines them into one giant list. You'll need to sign up for an account to make your list, so click the Sign Up link at the top of the page on the right side.

You'll fill out the form with a working e-mail address, and then create a username and password, and click the Sign Up button. Then go click the confirmation link in the e-mail they send you (I found my e-mail in the Spam folder, so be sure to check there if you don't see it in your main inbox). Clicking the link will also sign you into the site so that you can get started right away.

Interacting with the list is easy! If you've read a book click the I've Read It button. I didn't do as well as I thought I would. To be fair there were a lot of fairly modern books on there and I've been spending a lot of my reading time on the literary canon because of school.

The other option for interacting is to mark books that you want to read with the I Want to Read It button. I hit way more of those than the number of books I'd read.

Once you've added the books that you've read to your profile via the I've Read It button, you can click Profile at the top of the page and see a list of what you've read. You can then also review the books that you've read by clicking the Review It button.

Are the 623 books on the list daunting to try and go through? Well you can also browse by Individual Lists by using that option at the top of the page.

How many of these books have you read? Go find out today!

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)
