Quick Tip

Michael writes:

I've been getting your newsletter for years and even purchased a few of your items for sale. but this time I just have a couple of tech questions. I have a great many VHS tapes I'd like to reformat and I was thinking of putting them on (flash drives) to save space. DVDs take up a lot of space too when ya get enough of them. Can you recommend a type or a brand that would do the job? I've got hundreds of movies I want to save and no room to store them. I'm using the "Diamond VC500 Capture device" and I have windows 7. Thank you for your attention.

Michael, with hundreds of movies to save, your best bet would be to purchase a dedicated external hard drive instead of dealing with multiple flash drives.

You should be able to purchase a terabyte of drive for less than $100. I'm not sure how much space your converted files take up, but check the size of files you have already converted and multiply that out to see how much space you need.

Computers 101

Marty from Ann Arbor Writes:

I just read 'Hotmail' has been assimilated into Outlook. I have some old emails w/photos, from once upon a time when I used 'Hotmail'. I would like to forward them to my current email acct. but when I do I get this pop up notice asking for my user name and password in order to forward them. User name and password are lost to the nether world of the internet. Any suggestions?

There's an option you can try for retrieving that long-lost password. But this is a good time to remind you that it's important to remember those passwords and to properly forward mail from and close down accounts you no longer intend to use.

You can try to retrieve your Hotmail information from Outlook.com. If you go to the Outlook.com sign-in page, you'll see "Can't access your account" just below the Sign In button.

Click on it and you'll be given the option to enter your e-mail address and reset your password. Enter your Hotmail address and type the captcha.

You'll see the option to Reset your password. You can choose to have them e-mail you a link if you've set up an alternate e-mail address for your Hotmail account.

If that e-mail address is no longer accessible, you can choose to answer a security question.

You can also click a link if neither one of those options will work.

Then you input the e-mail address of your account and the address you'd like to receive the recovery e-mail. Choose Next.

You'll be given some questions to complete. After you submit that survey, you should hear back from Microsoft in a day or so.

I hope this helps you find your password.

On The Move

Pat from Minneapolis writes:

I'm using movie maker 2.6 to make a movie & the pictures on my CD are very blurry–please help!

First of all Pat, that's a pretty old version of Movie Maker. If your system will permit, I'd go to Microsoft and download a newer version. Click this link to learn which version your system will support. Then download the newer version if possible.

If that doesn't take care of the issue, one possibility is that are exporting the video to a DVD or DV-AVI resolution. The resolution of those formats may be much lower that a photo taken with a higher mega-pixel camera.

Consider using a higher resolution output.

When you've finished editing your movie in Movie Maker , choose Save Movie on the right side of the screen.

Click the arrow beside Save Movie and you'll see many options for the resolution.

Your Cell Phone Is A Bacteria Farm

Prepare to be disturbed. Very disturbed. The photo below is of the kinds of bacteria that live on cell phones:

True that's after it was allowed to grow in a Petri dish for a few days, but still. YUCK.

A professor at The University Of Surrey asked students to make imprints of their mobile phones in a Petri dish to find out how much bacteria the phones carried around. Turns out they're good for storing a lot more than phone numbers, music and photos.

There was a whole lot of bacteria. Most of it was harmless, but they did find Staphyloccoccus aureus – which can cause everything from staph infections to food poisoning.

Today's Feature

Charlene from Tenn writes:

"Steve, I was reading your article about this new Outlook.com. My Hotmail account was upgraded to it so I went in to try it out. I don't know if it's that program or my browser, but each time I try to insert, say, a picture whether in line or an attachment, I get this God blessed box every time that that says Internet Explorer encountered an error and needs to close. Is it on my end or who's? This is driving me nutso… thanks so much."

Hi, Charlene. Thanks for the great question.

When I looked into this issue, I discovered that you are not alone. This is apparently a conflict between newer versions of Outlook being used with older versions of IE. In other words, this is another of the notorious KNOWN ISSUES with Microsoft.

You didn't provide any of your version information, but I bet you a Coke that you're running Internet Explorer 6 or earlier with with Server 2003. If you are, look here..

DIY Christmas Lights Planning

Growing up we always put the Christmas tree up after Thanksgiving, and it's a tradition that I've held onto in my adulthood. My roommate and I only put up a tiny tree because the cats had a field day when we put up a larger tree and knocked it over or stole ornaments off of it. But it's up and makes everything so cozy.

In fact, so cozy that I've thought about putting up exterior lights on the house since the cats can't get to those.

Before I ever tackle that kind of a project I look for planning guides so I know what I'm getting myself into. When I found this one, I knew I had to share it with you.

I had a ton of questions in mind and this site answered all of them – like how much electricity does running outdoor Christmas lights use? How many lights do I need? What kind of lights do I need? How do I put them up safely?

You'll find all of these in featured sections right on the main page! So you don't have to go hunting for the specific information you want. They even cover Christmas decorations made out of greenery!

I hope this helps you plan for your outdoor decorations!

One More Big Deal

"Everyone Wants My Earbuds!"

Your Poor Ears Haven't LIVED - Till They've Tried On These Babies!

Bendy-z

Take One Part Absolutely Remarkable Sound, One Part Ultra-Comfort...

And You Get THESE Phenomenal Earbuds!

Noise Reduction! Extra Bass!

Sends Every Other Set Of Earbuds Cryin' For Their Mommas!

** LOWEST PRICE EVER! **

If you've ever tried to listen music with hard plastic earbuds, you've probably had the same gripes that I've had with 'em. Yeah, they're lightweight but the trouble is your ear has to be just the right size to fit them. You have to jam them in your ear - hoping and praying that they stay. But they always end up falling out... so you have to jam 'em so far into your ear that they're REALLY uncomfortable.

That's why I was so excited found the PERFECT solution! We've just come across an incredible set that sound GREAT (YES...they're STEREO, have EXTRA BASS & are NOISE REDUCTION! ) and are VERY comfortable.

Let's face it, if earphones aren't comfortable, who cares how they sound, cuz you'll never wear 'em to ever find out! Well, these stream-lined earphones really deliver not only on great sound but comfort too!

Here's why these Stereo Earbuds work:

Each earpiece features a soft silicone earpad and they will fit in almost any ear. They create a slight suction - so when you place the earpiece in your ear it stays there ...comfortably, and doesn't fall out!

These truly are a have a great set of earphones that you can take where ever you go! In fact, you can use these at your computer desk if you're working on your computer late at night or early in the morning and you need to keep the sound down.

And the cord is long enough (4 foot) without being too long so as to get tangled and in the way (another small point but something I've noticed as a problem with other earphones I've tried!)

And in case you were wonderin', this is the common plug (3.5 mm) that fits into the front and your computer and most other audio devices, like portable radios, laptops, cd /dvd/mp3 players, iPods etc.

Do NOT let the low price fool you on this. We just happened to get a great deal on these so we're passin' along the savings! Believe it or not, today these are just
$4.97 and shipping in the US is FREE on all orders over $5.00!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/6928

PS - At this price, might want to consider picking up 2 or three of these so you have one at your computer, one in the car and one you can stick in your pocket or purse for walks or bike rides!

Warning - This price is set to increase soon! Don't pay $12.97 for 'em later - grab 'em today!

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He had already brushed off once, so I really wasn't expecting it when he paused for a moment mid-stride and gave a giant shake! He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)

Winter in Bryce Canyon, Utah. It's cold. Like 20 degrees below zero, but it felt like more like forty below from an aggressive wind biting at your face. And I decide it might be fun to go out and shoot some star photos :) Fortunately, I had plenty of arctic gear with me and that made all the difference in the world. My hands were always cold from...
