Quick Tip

Ali from Qatar writes:

First, thanks to you guys & gals because your newsletters are very very very helpful for me. One of my friends has brought a new laptop with Windows 8 but what he has done is, he gave to the IT(who repairs the system) guy, the IT guy removed Windows 8 and installed Windows 7. It's okay, but laptop headphone connection and USB ports are not working properly. Can you help to sort out this problem? Thanks.

The issue could be related to either hardware or software. Did he test out the USB ports and the headphone connection before the IT guy worked on it? If the headphone jack and USB ports never functioned, I'd suggest returning the laptop. Though removing the operating system might have invalidated any warranty.

If the headphone connection is Bluetooth and not a physical plug, there is the possibility that you are missing some drivers for Windows 7. Microsoft does offer this troubleshooting program for USB devices.

Check the manufacturer's website for your headphones for Windows 7 drivers. And that IT guy could also take a second look.

Heck, there's even new electronics you can attach to your phone to let you process a credit card payment anywhere you are, right on your smartphone!

You better believe it that thieves know how this stuff works.

According to recent articles, using nothing more than the same tools a payment processor uses, thieves could potentially make a tool to scan your card in the time it takes them to walk past you on the street!

Even an ordinary laptop can utilize radio waves to copy and clone cards - that's a scary thought!

Do YOU know what kind of information your credit card has stored in it?

Computers 101

James from Pontiac writes:

What can you do when Microsoft keeps losing your password. I can add a new password then Microsoft loses it. same problem with Yahoo, too. It gets to be a pain. You can't email them they hide like cowards.

James, I'm not sure if you mean that your browser isn't remembering your passwords or if you're typing them in and being told they aren't valid. Either way, it's unlikely that both Microsoft and Yahoo are both losing your passwords. You enter your password and it pretty much sits untouched in your account unless you choose to make changes to it.

If the issue is that your browser won't remember your passwords, it's most likely that you have certain security settings on your browser that tell it not to remember passwords.

Click this article to learn how to take care of that issue.

If you have stored usernames and passwords in the past, but can't seem to get them right now, you might want to check out Windows Credential Manager. Click this link to learn more.

Microsoft and Yahoo aren't hiding from you when it come to resetting or retrieving passwords. For Microsoft you can go to the Outlook.com sign in page and select Can't access your account.

Then you can reset your password.

For Yahoo!, you can follow this link and then choose, I can't access my account Help.

You then tell Yahoo! what the issue is.

Then you can reset your password.

I can almost guarantee you that Microsoft and Yahoo! aren't losing or changing your passwords. The way account systems are set up, it's almost impossible for someone to do it accidentally or even on purpose. In 99.99% of password issues, human error is involved. We all do it, we miss a capital letter or space or type an o when it should be a zero. This can be especially tricky since most passwords don't display when you type them and I find that touch screen devices can easily lead you astray.

My advice is that if you get a confirmation e-mail with a username and password, try copying and pasting the username and password into the appropriate field to see if that works. If you find yourself having issues a lot with passwords, I'd suggest letting your browser remember your passwords and usernames. It probably also wouldn't hurt for you to keep a Notepad or Word file with usernames and passwords. It's certainly not the most secure practice in the world, but as a practical matter it gives you the ability to cut and paste usernames and passwords into fields to ensure accuracy or you might consider downloading a password manager like KeePass.

Grace, I've got two possible solutions to play Pogo games on your Android tablet. For the first one, you'll need to head to the Google Play Store. Just tap the play store icon on your tablet.

Search for Pogo in the search field.

From The Archives

John from Kilmucklin, Ireland writes:

Hi guys, when I try to open a new tab on windows 7 all i get is "about:blank. When I try to change the settings on internet options, it works the way I want it to, but my problem is when I power off my PC and turn it back on again I'm greeted with this "about:blank" again. I have tried scanning my PC but this nightmare continues, any assistance would be greatly welcome.

Answer:

The good news is this isn't a virus, error or something you need to worry about. It's just the way to bring up a blank web page when your web browser loads. The reason this is done is to speed up the load time of your web browser and to save on bandwidth since it's not trying to load a website.

If you would rather have a specific page open every time you start your web browser, you can change the default home page. Here's how...

Photography Exhibit Basics

A famous American humorist, Evan Esar was once quoted as saying, "Success is the good fortune that comes from aspiration, desperation, perspiration, and inspiration". The life of an artist, a digital photographer to be specific, is such that tons of planning, money and sweat can pave the path for success.

Urban Observatory

This is a really cool project! Urban Observatory is collecting data on large cities and putting it into a database so that it can be compared and contrasted in ways that are relevant to modern life.

They call themselves a "a live museum with a data pulse" and I think once you try the application, you'll agree.

I'd begin navigating by watching the video at the top of the page (it runs 4:34), and checking out the information under Why Does it Matter? After that, you can click the Start Comparing button to be whisked away to the app.

The default comparison will be on Population Density. There will be an instruction window overlaid on it at first, read the instructions and then click the X button or Start Comparing.

Beneath each map there is information explaining what you're seeing. You can change the Theme by selecting a different one from the Theme dropdown. And you can change the cities you're comparing by clicking Cities at the top and the clicking the cities you want to view instead and which panel you'd like to display them in.

Another thing you might want to check out is the Flickr feed. It is filled with really interesting photos of the data displayed.

I thought this was a very neat site to explore! Go check it out!

And if you get a new computer, you can even move the license over to that one!

Don't leave your security to chance. There's never been a better deal on anti-malware... if you miss this, you're gonna be kickin' yourself when your PC gets infected!

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)
