Quick Tip

Laurie from New York writes:

I am using a laptop running windows 8. Every time I go on the web I see a box that says I need to download a Flash Player. I've tried once or twice, and I get some odd type of flash player that installs a bunch of other junk with it. What do I do to update Flash Player properly?

Those tricky little reminders to update Flash Player are a prime way to sneak unwanted toolbars and add-ons onto your computer. They do offer a Flash Player download, but with strings attached. My advice is to never click on one of those suggestions to update Flash Player. If you think you legitimately may need a Flash Play update, go to Adobe's official site and download any updates from there. Click here to go to get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. You'll notice an option for a free McAfee Security scan, but you can just uncheck that and choose install.

Make sure you turn on automatic updates for FlashPlayer or regularly check Adobe for updates. That way you know you'll always have the latest version.

Have you ever been sitting there, fighting with your phone, just trying to dial in the right numbers? But the touchscreen buttons are too small, your fingers are too big, or the phone just seems not to want to listen to you?

Or maybe you noticed that after just a couple uses, your touchscreen device is COVERED from top to bottom in nasty smudges that look awful and get your screen blurry!

Oh, and scratches? Those are PERMANENT DAMAGE!

And how many times have you been out-and-about, ready to write a check, note, sign something... only to realize YOU HAVE NO PEN! It's infuriating!

And if you're gonna carry a stylus around... why not make it a pen too?

The stylus end is covered in a rubber-tip which glides smoothly across your touchscreen! And because of it's soft-rubber texture, it won't risk scratching your screen!

Jim from Morrisville, Pennsylvania writes:

First off, I am using WordPerfect X4 and to me seems easier than using Word. When I used to copy sections of your newsletter to WP, I could copy then paste graphic into doc. At first It would not let me just copy and paste. I have to save, then insert graphic. Sometimes when I do this and then try to insert graphic, all I get is a blank box. Is problem with newsletter or is it my WP X4? Thanks.

Jim, there isn't necessarily a problem with WordPerfect or the newsletter. Here's why you have to save the image to use later. The images you see in the newsletter aren't actually contained in the newsletter. With all those images, the newsletter would be much too large a file to send.

The images are actually imbedded in the newsletter using a link to an Internet address where that image had been uploaded to a server. You may be viewing an image of a Surface Pro below:

But what is actually there is the link to the location where this image is displayed on our server: http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2013/09/surface2cropped.jpg

By saving the image, you are downloading an actual copy of the image to your computer and inserting it into your document.

Some programs will display embedded images when the information is copied and pasted. Others will not. If your intent is to archive the information, the only way to be sure that you actually have the images is to download and save them.

If you don't mind, I'll throw in a little sales pitch here. All of our articles are archived on a monthly basis with graphics in our Tech Tips Monthly eMagazine. It's free for Premium Members.

As for the difficulty you're having inserting the saved graphics into your documents, I can think of a couple of possible issues. Make sure you've saved the actual image and not the whole web page. Open it up where the image is saved to check. Also be careful of the size of the image you're trying to insert, it might possibly be too large.

I was searching through some WordPerfect troubleshooting forums looking for problems similar to yours and it seems that some people having image issues in WordPerfect have found success by uninstalling and reinstalling WordPerfect.

Hope this info helps.

On The Move

Lynn from Avon Park, Florida asks:

How can my brother next door connect to my Wifi Network using his Android Tablet? He doesn't have a signal. I put his Mac number in my router, but to no avail.

If your WiFi signal was reaching your brother's house, it would be fairly simple for him to connect. He would just have to log on with the username and password that you provided. But it's possible that your router just doesn't get to his place. I'm not sure how far away he is, but that could be a factor. A home router won't send a signal much farther than 200 feet or so.

Most routers are omnidirectional, they send the signal out equally in all directions from where the router is located. Some routers will allow you to add a direction antenna that sends the signal in one direction, so you could aim it at your brother's place. Other options include...

AJM from Illinois writes:

Under the File Menu, the Send To Options for-Page by email & Link by email are greyed out on my Windows 8 PC. I have this feature on my old Vista PC. How can this be corrected? Thanks.

Answer:

It sounds to me like there is no default e-mail client set up and configured for your Windows 8 installation. You can use the integrated mail program to send and receive mail in Windows 8. If you have a mail program set up but the option is still greyed out, you may need to restore it as the default mail application.

Start by clicking on the Charms Bar (lower right corner of the screen) and clicking "settings..."

Delete App History In Windows 8

When a Metro app is closed in Windows 8, it does not close completely, it just pauses. This feature allows users to multitask and switch between different apps quickly without having to launch the application from. The problem with this is that the app stores data which some users may want deleted. So in this small tip I'm going to show you how to Metro application history as well as terminate any background applications.

One More Big Deal

"Everyone Wants My Earbuds!"

Your Poor Ears Haven't LIVED - Till They've Tried On These Babies!

Bendy-z

Take One Part Absolutely Remarkable Sound, One Part Ultra-Comfort...

And You Get THESE Phenomenal Earbuds!

Noise Reduction! Extra Bass!

Sends Every Other Set Of Earbuds Cryin' For Their Mommas!

** LOWEST PRICE EVER! **

If you've ever tried to listen music with hard plastic earbuds, you've probably had the same gripes that I've had with 'em. Yeah, they're lightweight but the trouble is your ear has to be just the right size to fit them. You have to jam them in your ear - hoping and praying that they stay. But they always end up falling out... so you have to jam 'em so far into your ear that they're REALLY uncomfortable.

That's why I was so excited found the PERFECT solution! We've just come across an incredible set that sound GREAT (YES...they're STEREO, have EXTRA BASS & are NOISE REDUCTION! ) and are VERY comfortable.

Let's face it, if earphones aren't comfortable, who cares how they sound, cuz you'll never wear 'em to ever find out! Well, these stream-lined earphones really deliver not only on great sound but comfort too!

Here's why these Stereo Earbuds work:

Each earpiece features a soft silicone earpad and they will fit in almost any ear. They create a slight suction - so when you place the earpiece in your ear it stays there ...comfortably, and doesn't fall out!

These truly are a have a great set of earphones that you can take where ever you go! In fact, you can use these at your computer desk if you're working on your computer late at night or early in the morning and you need to keep the sound down.

And the cord is long enough (4 foot) without being too long so as to get tangled and in the way (another small point but something I've noticed as a problem with other earphones I've tried!)

And in case you were wonderin', this is the common plug (3.5 mm) that fits into the front and your computer and most other audio devices, like portable radios, laptops, cd /dvd/mp3 players, iPods etc.

Do NOT let the low price fool you on this. We just happened to get a great deal on these so we're passin' along the savings! Believe it or not, today these are just
$4.97 and shipping in the US is FREE on all orders over $5.00!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/6928

PS - At this price, might want to consider picking up 2 or three of these so you have one at your computer, one in the car and one you can stick in your pocket or purse for walks or bike rides!

Warning - This price is set to increase soon! Don't pay $12.97 for 'em later - grab 'em today!

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He had already brushed off once, so I really wasn't expecting it when he paused for a moment mid-stride and gave a giant shake! He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)
