Richard from Florida writes:

Is there any way two iPads can talk to each other one is Apple the other is Android, we have tried different ways, but they all work with phone numbers. Is there another way? Thank you.

Richard what you have here are two tablets, one an iPad and one an Android. The name iPad only applies to tablets manufactured by Apple and running the iOS system. If you say iPad when you mean Android, you might end up with some confusion along the way. You're dealing with two separate operating systems, iOS and Android. Fortunately, that's not really a problem.

Messaging between the devices is a simple as downloading the Android version of an app for your Android and the Apple Skype App for your iPad. Skype will let you make voice and video calls. Viber is also an example of an app available for both platforms that offers voice calls. You do need a phone number to set up Viber. Skype will let you make voice and video calls. Any messaging app that allows voice communication and has a version for Android and iPad should work.

Computers 101

Patricia from Nevada writes:

I am going to waste a little of your time to tell you why nothing you say is going to persuade me to like Win8 in any form. It was not designed for someone like me. It was designed for the person Microsoft wants me to be, or thinks I should be. It does what Microsoft wants it to not what I want it to.

I use my computer for correspondence, accounting, finances, taxes, etc., with a bit of shopping, e-mail, and reading the news. I am advised Office 2013 is mostly web-based, with some kind of family subscription plan. What family? I would be the only user. I don't use the cloud because I don't trust it. I don't collaborate. I don't share anything. I have no shared or public folders or files, and I never will. I don't listen to music, or the radio. I don't watch movies or television. I don't stream anything and don't plan to. I don't use Skype. I don't play games. I don't take, edit or share pictures or video. I don't have any "My Pictures" or "My Videos" or "My Movies." I don't need to see the weather because I live in the Las Vegas Valley where it doesn't change much. I am a very private person. I have no social media accounts and don't want any. I use a keyboard. Period. I have a form of dyslexia, and I cannot learn to swipe, tap, squeeze, flap, whatever. (I can't use a mouse, either.)

So, when the sad day arrives that I have no alternative to Win8, I will be spending my first weeks with it trying to figure out how to strip out all the stuff I don't want, don't need, cannot use and won't use, and then finding 3rd-party utilities that will make me a computer I want.

Patricia, I love a challenge. And although nothing I can say can make anyone love a particular operating system, I do think you have some misconceptions about Windows 8 and Office 2013. But let me play devil's advocate (Microsoft being the devil in this case.)

You can use Windows 8 for Word Processing and Accounting the same way you use previous versions of Windows. The Office 2013 interface is a little different, but certainly familiar. There is an Office 365 subscription plan available (that makes Office available on up to 5 devices), but you can still purchase a single use, one computer copy if you choose. And you don't have to use the Internet with Office 365 if you don't choose to.

You do not have to use the Cloud with Office 2013, though it is a great feature. As for the safety of the Cloud, you are most likely already using it, whether you like it or not. All of your e-mail is stored in a cloud by your ISP. Now you many eventually download it to your computer, but it's there.

But you certainly don't have to use any cloud features if you don't want to. Windows 8 will serve you well for surfing the Internet and reading e-mails plus your basic word processing and accounting needs.

The display is also highly customizable, so you can remove any functions you aren't interested in from view and never bother to access them again. You could attempt to have the Windows 8 features stripped off by someone, but that seems an unnecessary step. None of these programs would slow down a new computer you're using for Word Processing or accounting purposes.

You can use a keyboard with Windows 8 and also a feature that many people with dyslexia find very helpful, the voice controls. They allow you to move the cursor and also to dictate text.

I don't think Mircosoft is trying to make a program for the person they want you to be, but a program that covers the needs of the billions of potential users out there. Facebook reports more than a billion active monthly users, so there are a lot of people interested in social media and sharing.

Many people want to use their computers for photos and video and increasingly for streaming movies. There were 1.65 billion music downloads in 2012 – many younger people have never purchased a physical CD. So Microsoft needed to design an operating system to meet their needs as well as yours.

I can't say you will love Windows 8, it does have more features than you want to use. But a Windows 8 system should certainly be capable of easily meeting your needs and it would be fairly simple for you to put the programs you want front and center and not be bothered with any of the other features.

Since you don't care for cloud integration, an Apple computer would not be a good choice for you. But could consider having a Linux system built and find word processing, accounting, browser and e-mail applications that work for your purposes.

And it's kind of shame you don't share on the Internet, Patricia. I really enjoy your writing style and if you had a blog, I would read it.

Suzette from Jacksonville, FL writes:

Every time I try to eject my USB drive, I receive the following message: "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." Prior to using Windows 7, I never had this problem.

The Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" feature lets you know when you can unplug your USB devices without corrupting any files or ruining the drive. Sometimes when trying to unplug your device you may get this annoying message, however:

USB Error Message

This problem is usually caused because a program you might not expect is accessing the drive in the background without actively notifying you. For instance, programs like Windows Media Player frequently search the drives connected to your computer for new music files to build up its internal library.

To make sure none of these programs are currently active, you will first need to manually shut down any software running in the background. To see a list of active programs, tap the "Ctrl," "Alt," and "Delete" keys at the same time and then click the "Start Task Manager" button. Navigate to the "Processes" tab and click "Image Name" to see all the active processes in alphabetical order.

Click any program that could be accessing files on the USB drive – such as media players or word processing programs – and then click the "End Process" button at the bottom of the window. Repeat this process with any other programs running in the background.

Windows Task Manager

Try safely removing the USB drive again and see if the problem persists. If you continue to receive the error message, your computer may be trying to make use of the memory available on the USB drive to boost its speed.

Open the Start menu and click "Computer," then right-click the name of your USB drive. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu and then navigate to the "ReadyBoost" tab.

USB Properties

Click the radio button labeled "Do Not Use This Device" and then click "OK" and attempt to safely remove the USB device again.

Turning Off ReadyBoost

In the event the problem persists, you will need to download a third party tool that specifically checks for all open connections to the USB port and shuts them down. Download and install a program such as Process Explorer, and then click the "Find" button at the top of the screen and select "Find Handle or DLL."

Process Explorer

Type the name of your USB drive letter in the search box, such as "E:\" if it is the "E" drive, and tap enter. The tool will bring up a list of every program currently connected to that drive. Right-click the program and select "Close Handle" to shut it down and the USB drive should now be ready to be safely removed.

On The Move

Re-gifting A Kindle

I recently purchased a Kindle Fire HDX, but I still had a perfectly good first generation Kindle Fire that I wouldn't be needing. I decided to gift it to a friend who loves to read and watch movies on demand, but has never owned a tablet.

With most tablets all you need to do is a factory reset and all of your personal information is erased. Kindles, because they are tied to your Amazon account are a two-step process. Whether you are giving away or selling a Kindle, you'll want to make sure you clear out your information and get the tablet ready for the next user.

You'll need to de-register your Kindle so that it is no longer tied to your account. This prevents anyone from either accidentally or on-purpose purchasing items from your Amazon account.

To deregister your Kindle using the device, tap the quick settings icon and and then choose more.

Four Free Fun Games For Your Android Tablet

If you are among the millions who received an Android Tablet for Christmas, I've got some suggestions for some fun, free games that you might enjoy. You can find these games in the Google Play store, which you can access by tapping the icon for the store on your tablet. It looks like this.

Now if your Android Tablet happened to be a Kindle, you'll want to look in the Amazon App Store.

First up on my list is Words With Friends. It's a Scrabble-like game that lets you play with friends or with random opponents. What I like best is that you play at your own pace with as many or as few friends as you choose. You can make a move once a day or sit down and play a whole game with a friend within an hour. My husband and I sometimes play a game sitting in the same room, but I also play with friends and relatives in other states, even other countries.

Harvey from Pensacola writes:

How do you repair the "502 Bad Gateway" error?

Answer:

There is some good news and bad news when it comes to 502 Gateway errors. The good news is it's probably not your computer's fault. The bad news is there isn't much you can do to fix it if it isn't your computers fault. 502 errors are generally errors between servers trying to transfer information needed to load the webpage your requesting.

If this error is on a website, it is most likely a site error and the server administrator of that website needs to investigate and repair it. The most you can do is report the specific website address to the company who runs the website so they are aware of the issue.

There are a few situations where a 502 error can be a problem specific to your machine. If you contact the website and they insist everything is working fine then you can try these steps to correct the problem on your end..

Windows Classic Shell

We've posted this before, but we get so many questions about the free Classic Shell program, let's take a look at it again.

Do you have Windows 8? Are you frustrated with the new interface and how they moved and changed pretty much everything? In early testing, Microsoft allowed (via a registry hack) users to re-enable the start menu, but removed this feature before the release of Windows 8. Thankfully, some very creative people over at Classic Shell have released a freeware utility which can give you back the Start Menu everyone loved.

Let's take a look at what Classic Shell does and some of its features,
