Computers 101

Alice from Fayetteville, NC writes:

I have Vista on my desktop and at 71 I am unable to upgrade to a costly new system. What do you recommend ? I have never liked Vista but that was all you could get on a new computer at the time. Thanks

Alice, you can certainly keep on using Vista, even though you don't like it much. Microsoft will continue to support Vista until April of 2017. You could also see about upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista. You could also purchase the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, but the price I'm finding is around $170, which is actually more expensive than buying the full Windows 8.1 operating system operating system, which you can find for around $130.

Although there are a lot of similarities between Vista and Windows 7. So, if you don't like Vista, you may not love Windows 7.

If you can manage to put away $10 a month until 2017, you should have enough to buy an inexpensive computer or a new operating system by then. A lot of people don't like Windows 8, but it's a perfectly good operating system that Microsoft should continue to support for many years to come.

Since expense is a concern, I won't suggest switching to an Apple system. Though, if you have a tech-savvy friend to help out, you might consider switching your system to Linux. The operating system is free, though it wouldn't run Windows applications. So you'd have to find new versions of the types of programs you're using for word processing, web surfing, e-mail etc..

From The Archives

Harvey from Pensacola writes:

How do you repair the "502 Bad Gateway" error?

Answer:

There is some good news and bad news when it comes to 502 Gateway errors. The good news is it's probably not your computer's fault. The bad news is there isn't much you can do to fix it if it isn't your computers fault. 502 errors are generally errors between servers trying to transfer information needed to load the webpage your requesting.

If this error is on a website, it is most likely a site error and the server administrator of that website needs to investigate and repair it. The most you can do is report the specific website address to the company who runs the website so they are aware of the issue.

There are a few situations where a 502 error can be a problem specific to your machine. If you contact the website and they insist everything is working fine then you can try these steps to correct the problem on your end.

Amanda's Coolsite

Taste Stopping

You all know I love a good food site, so when I ran across Taste Stopping - I knew at a glance that I would be sharing it with you.

Normally I talk about how gorgeous the food photos are, or how the pictures make my mouth water with the desire to devour whatever tasty treats they are displaying. This site is a little different; they highlight images from around the web of what are tasty recipes, but whose pictures leave something to be desired.

Back on the main page, navigation is easy. Just scroll down the page, and click on whatever strikes your fancy. Here you'll find the currently featured articles, as well as blog entries from the site owner. Near the top of the page is a black navigation strip that offers links to the About, Bells and Whistles, and Submission Guidelines/FAQ sections. As you scroll down past the current featured articles make sure you note the navigation options beneath them, where you can select the page you want to view and navigate past features with the back and forth with the first, last, arrows, and page numbers.

To find out more about how the site works, and where you can navigate click on Bells and Whistles on the black navigation strip. As you're reading this section note that all the sections that are being explained are linked to in the paragraphs. So you can just click the link when you find the section you really want to visit.

I'd also recommend checking out the About section, because it is there that you'll find the information about submitting your food images. This ties into the Submission Guidelines/FAQ section too!

What image is worth redeeming? What recipe is delicious in spite of its poorly presented photograph? You decide today!

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He had already brushed off once, so I really wasn't expecting it when he paused for a moment mid-stride and gave a giant shake! He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)

Winter in Bryce Canyon, Utah. It's cold. Like 20 degrees below zero, but it felt like more like forty below from an aggressive wind biting at your face. And I decide it might be fun to go out and shoot some star photos :) Fortunately, I had plenty of arctic gear with me and that made all the difference in the world. My hands were always cold from...
