Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! James from Nokomis, Florida writes: We have XP our computer. If we have no confidential info online are we still going to be at risk after April? Microsoft is ending security and bug fix support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. Obviously no one can get information from your computer that isn't on your computer. By no confidential information, do you mean that you've never used your computer to make an online purchase or to fill out any government or insurance forms and never received an eMail with account information? Because if someone were to use malware to take control of your computer, they could be able to see everything you do. Also if your computer were to become infected, you could put everyone on your contact lists at risk because a virus could send spam to their computer and attempt to trick them into opening an e-mail from you that could infect their computer with a virus. And even if you don't have any confidential information, a virus could still wreck your computer and cause you to lose all of your data. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Suzette from Jacksonville, FL writes: Every time I try to eject my USB drive, I receive the following message: "This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again." Prior to using Windows 7, I never had this problem. The Windows "Safely Remove Hardware" feature lets you know when you can unplug your USB devices without corrupting any files or ruining the drive. Sometimes when trying to unplug your device you may get this annoying message, however: This problem is usually caused because a program you might not expect is accessing the drive in the background without actively notifying you. For instance, programs like Windows Media Player frequently search the drives connected to your computer for new music files to build up its internal library. To make sure none of these programs are currently active, you will first need to manually shut down any software running in the background. To see a list of active programs, tap the "Ctrl," "Alt," and "Delete" keys at the same time and then click the "Start Task Manager" button. Navigate to the "Processes" tab and click "Image Name" to see all the active processes in alphabetical order. Click any program that could be accessing files on the USB drive such as media players or word processing programs and then click the "End Process" button at the bottom of the window. Repeat this process with any other programs running in the background. Try safely removing the USB drive again and see if the problem persists. If you continue to receive the error message, your computer may be trying to make use of the memory available on the USB drive to boost its speed. Open the Start menu and click "Computer," then right-click the name of your USB drive. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu and then navigate to the "ReadyBoost" tab. Click the radio button labeled "Do Not Use This Device" and then click "OK" and attempt to safely remove the USB device again. In the event the problem persists, you will need to download a third party tool that specifically checks for all open connections to the USB port and shuts them down. Download and install a program such as Process Explorer, and then click the "Find" button at the top of the screen and select "Find Handle or DLL." Type the name of your USB drive letter in the search box, such as "E:\" if it is the "E" drive, and tap enter. The tool will bring up a list of every program currently connected to that drive. Right-click the program and select "Close Handle" to shut it down and the USB drive should now be ready to be safely removed. ~ Ty Arthur Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Four Free Fun Games For Your Android Tablet If you are among the millions who received an Android Tablet for Christmas, I've got some suggestions for some fun, free games that you might enjoy. You can find these games in the Google Play store, which you can access by tapping the icon for the store on your tablet. It looks like this. Now if your Android Tablet happened to be a Kindle, you'll want to look in the Amazon App Store. First up on my list is Words With Friends. It's a Scrabble-like game that lets you play with friends or with random opponents. What I like best is that you play at your own pace with as many or as few friends as you choose. You can make a move once a day or sit down and play a whole game with a friend within an hour. My husband and I sometimes play a game sitting in the same room, but I also play with friends and relatives in other states, even other countries. To learn more about free games for you tablet, head on over to WorldStart!
Margie from Pueblo West, CO writes: We just bought a new computer and it has a 4GB memory and am reading we should avoid buying. Oh my why should it be more and what is the bad part about the 4 GB memory? Mark from Brampton writes: In your article 'Does The Brand Of Computer Matter?' you said "Avoid 4 GB or lower of system memory and over 16 GB". The ideal range is 8 to 16 GB". Why is more than 16 GB something to avoid? I always thought the more RAM the better.
Answer: Normally we don't group questions together at WorldStart, but both of these questions were submitted as a followup to my article Does The Brand Of Computer Matter? and it seemed appropriate to answer them both in the same article. In that article when discussing specs to look for I stated: "Memory: Avoid 4 GB or lower of system memory and over 16 GB. The ideal range is 8 to 16 GB." So to answer Margie's question first, having under 4GB of memory is not a disaster, but it's definitely something you may consider upgrading in the future. A modern operating system such as Windows or MacOS runs many applications in the background as part of its normal functions. Everything from core operating system functions to virus scanners to background e-mail checkers are running even when you're simply browsing a web page. Go to WorldStart to learn more!
Windows Classic Shell We've posted this before, but we get so many questions about the free Classic Shell program, let's take a look at it again. Do you have Windows 8? Are you frustrated with the new interface and how they moved and changed pretty much everything? In early testing, Microsoft allowed (via a registry hack) users to re-enable the start menu, but removed this feature before the release of Windows 8. Thankfully, some very creative people over at Classic Shell have released a freeware utility which can give you back the Start Menu everyone loved. Let's take a look at what Classic Shell does and some of its features... Just click WorldStart for more! For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
