Windows 8: What's Your Beef?

Time for a shocking confession. I like Windows 8.1. Once I learned how to navigate it, I was pretty impressed with its features. I'm not along, a lot of people who reluctantly made the switch will admit that it's a pretty good operating system.

But also a lot of you keep telling us that you ABSOLUTELY HATE IT!!! I mean, there's no start button!

But as we said in an article back in 2012, it's here, it's square, get used to it. Windows 8 or 8.1 is pretty close to your only choice of Windows operating system when you're shopping for a new PC these days.

The good news is that our team of writers may be able to help you with the things you hate about Windows 8.

So click here to submit your issues with Windows 8.

Please be specific – "I hate it!" or "It sucks!" is not quite enough information. And one or two complaints per question please.

Here are a couple of links with help for some common complaints:

The Most Versatile Speakers You'll EVER Find!

Good Sound, Lightweight, Foldable for Travel...

AND THEY LIGHT UP TO YOUR MUSIC!

Give Your MP3 Player the Speakers It Deserves!

Share Your Music, Or Just Listen Without Needing Headphones!

FINALLY!

The LED Lights Synchronize With The Music!

Works With Any Device That Has a Headphone Jack!

They Even Make Handy Computer Speakers!

I've Got a Major Issue, Here.

MP3 players are pretty common nowadays, right?

They don't make CD players or cassette players anymore, and MP3s definitely are easier to deal with.

BUT WHAT'S WITH ALL THE MP3 PLAYERS THAT DON'T HAVE SPEAKERS?!

What happened to music being something you put on and listened to from room to room? Parties?

Hey, even relaxing on your own, it'd be nice to use that little MP3 player WITHOUT headphones!

Then again, I DID have an MP3 player with speakers... and they sucked! BIG TIME!

It sounded like a recording in a tin can, underwater!

"Steve, IS there a solution?" Of course! And WorldStart finally has it!

The UNIVERSAL Light Show LED Fold-Up Speakers!

Fold it out and it's ready to go!

That's ALL there is to it!

Finally - you'll have all your MP3s on your MP3 player, but they can be heard from further than an inch away!

Plus, these work with ANY device that has a headphone jack! It connects right in the same spot - just plug in the 3.5mm plug! Easy!

iPods
MP3 Players
iPhones
Smartphones
Even Computers!

Oh Yeah, Did I Mention THEY LIGHT UP?!?!

This thing is AWESOME!

Once you plug them into your MP3 player or phone, get ready for the light show! All around the speakers' edges are built-in LEDs!

Get your music playing and those bad boys are gonna start pulsating RIGHT with your music!

That's right, these synchronize WITH your music! So if you're listening to loud rock, they're gonna be vibrant and blasting all sorts of colors! But if you're just enjoying some mellow jazz, it'll be softer, slower pulses!

You've never seen somethin' like this!

And it's SO COMPACT when you fold these speakers up, you can take them anywhere you go!

Stand Your Player Up!

With the simple cradle, your MP3 player will fit right inside and stand in place!

It keeps it easy to access and displays the current information on your screen without having to pull it back out!

Remember - it's a simple headphone plug, so ANY audio device that you could plug speakers or headphones into will work!

NOW, FOR MY NEXT SURPRISE...

IT'S ONLY $4.97!!!

And US shipping is FREE on any order over $5!

This isn't a joke, it's just one of our best deals EVER! Make sure to get to the store before the ONE box we got of these sells out for good!

Computers 101

Vince writes:

What would happen if I just continued using Windows XP? Vince, you will very likely end up looking like this.

or maybe like this...

or perhaps like this.

But odds are, you won't be a happy camper for very long if you plan to keep on using XP online in any way, shape or form. Microsoft is ending support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. Now XP isn't going to suddenly stop working, but without official Microsoft support, there will be no new security updates or bug fixes for Windows XP systems.

Third-party security software will continue to defend against known bugs, but without Microsoft support, they will not guarantee protection against new threats. Symantec, the company behind Norton Security said, "After the official End of Support date from Microsoft goes into affect, Symantec Support may not be able to provide full threat resolution on XP systems due to a lack of Microsoft security patches. It has always been Symantec's stance that proper network and workstation security begins at having the most recent security patches from the OS Vendor. Depending on the nature of the threats involved, Windows XP may be susceptible to viruses and risks that more recent iterations of Windows is immune to."

McAfee made a similar statement. "If a McAfee product requires Microsoft to provide a fix and Microsoft does not provide the fix, then McAfee cannot support the product any longer."

Without current security support, XP systems will be prime targets for people with malicious intent. They will be looking for ways to get into your system and steal your data. More so that usual. Between July 2012 and July 2013, Windows XP was an affected product in 45 Microsoft security updates. Without official support from Microsoft, those issues will not be addressed. With XP being completely vulnerable, you can expect to see a lot more threats than that in a year after April 2014.

It's a little like leaving your car unlocked with the keys in it or choosing to leave your doors unlocked at night. But you aren't leaving your doors unlocked out in the country with nobody around for miles. You are leaving the doors to your house unlocked when there are millions of people who want to break into it and who already know that you don't lock your doors. Maybe no one will try the door, but is that something you really want to count on?

On The Move

Joanne from Nebraska writes:

I have been told that you cannot sign out of email on a tablet. Does that mean your email would be open for anyone to read if they had access to your tablet?

Joanne, the best way to protect your e-mail is to protect your tablet. The majority of apps do not have the option of asking for a password every time it is opened. Even if your e-mail had a password requirement, that would still leave your tablet vulnerable. It's possible someone might open an Amazon app and order items with your account to be shipped to their home.

Or a child could innocently rack up charges trying to play a game like Candy Crush. There are third-party apps that allow you to add password protection to specific apps. (check the Google Play Store) But I think your best protection is to password protect the tablet. How to do that varies from tablet to tablet, but I'll give you an example for an Android system.

Letting Kids Play With Free Apps Could Cost You A Bundle

A five-year-old British boy managed to rack up $2500 in charges in just 15 minutes playing Zombies vs. Ninja on his parents' iPad. He did it with "in app" purchases of add-ons to the "free" game. The worst part, his dad punched in the password to unlock the iPad and handed it over to the child because the little boy said the game was free.

Apple refunded the money, but this is a good reminder of why it's not a good idea to just hand a mobile device over to a child and let him or her play. Most devices that use apps are tied to to a store with your account information (Google Marketplace, Amazon App Store, iTunes Store etc…) and if a child starts buying things, you'll get stuck with the charges until you can straighten it all out. A friend had the experience of handing a child a Kindle Fire to watch cartoons, but in addition to watching the free cartoons, he decided to buy a few.

Today's Feature

Microsoft Warns Of New XP Vulnerability

Microsoft is warning about new reports of a vulnerability in a kernel component of Windows XP (and also in Windows Server 2003). Now the kernel is a computer program that translates requests from the software into instructions for the CPU and other components of the computer. So this vulnerability is at the heart of the system.

Microsoft's Security TechCenter says they know about limited, targeted attacks to exploit this vulnerability.

The good news is that it doesn't affect people using operating systems newer than XP. Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 & 8.1 users have nothing to worry about. Microsoft has been saying for a while that one of the reasons for ending support for XP in April 2013 is that the system just can't stand up to modern day attacks. It's a whole different world from when XP came out at the turn of the century.

How this attack works is...

We all want to save money - am I right? And we all know that batteries can be pretty pricey.

The average person spends at least $80 a year on batteries. Bigger families, more batteries.

Think about how much money that is over the years.

This charger pack is the solution to saving big!

No more wasted trips to the store to buy new batteries every month! No more wasting big bucks on batteries either!!

These batteries can be charged using any standard wall outlet.

"Incredibly Versatile Life-Saver" is what comes to mind when I think of all the ways this baby can be used!

Now - let's do a little math here: Your average store is charging about $5.00 for a 4 pack of AA batteries.

Polar Bear Shaking Off

This image is one of a series where this big 'ole Polar Bear emerged from a snow bank and decided to take a stroll around our Polar Rover. He had already brushed off once, so I really wasn't expecting it when he paused for a moment mid-stride and gave a giant shake! He looked like a big dog just coming out of a bath – a snow bath in this instance! My favorite part…(More)

Winter in Bryce Canyon, Utah. It's cold. Like 20 degrees below zero, but it felt like more like forty below from an aggressive wind biting at your face. And I decide it might be fun to go out and shoot some star photos :) Fortunately, I had plenty of arctic gear with me and that made all the difference in the world. My hands were always cold from...
