Quick Tip

Suz writes:

I'm getting tired of all the drama about giving up XP because it won't be safe. I haven't downloaded a Windows update since the late 90′s and I stopped using anti-virus software about 8 years ago. I do periodic checks of my own and I do a format every two years or so "just because" and I have never had a virus or any other malware. Maybe I'll upgrade someday when there's something I actually consider to be an "upgrade".

If I were you, I'd get a couple of lotto tickets. It seems you have some crazy good luck. It's as if you hadn't locked your door since the late 90s, yet no one has ever tried the knob and slipped in to walk off with your TV.

If you don't have any anti-virus software, I'm not sure how you can be sure that you don't have any viruses or malware. They aren't always readily apparent and even if you aren't seeing any affects, you could be passing them on to others.

But it's your computer and your choice. It's a little like ignoring recall notices from your car dealer. My husband used to do that. Until the rear axle literally fell off the car.

Computers 101

Joan writes:

I have Windows 7. My old AOL browser is IE. I have uploaded a newer AOL and I said AOL could be the browser. Big mistake! Now I want to have the browser be IE because my newer AOLl won't let me print out my investments. How can I get IE to be the newest AOL browser? The old AOL still uses IE for it's browser but I don't like to use the old AOL. In internet options under Programs tab it says IE is the default web browser.

The quickest solution is just to open IE and go to Aol.com and log onto your account. You don't need the AOL browser installed on your computer to access your AOL account.

You can then click on that tab and drag it down to the taskbar.

You'll have quick and easy access to AOL.

Next I want you to search for Uninstall a program and click on the results.

Look for the AOL Browser, select it and choose uninstall.

In IE click the settings gear and choose Manage add-ons.

Look through the toolbars and if you seen any add-ons for AOL, go ahead and remove them.

Tech Support Scammers Target Phones & Tablets

Scammers are always looking for a new angle and phony computer tech support has always been popular. Recently we told you about a scam where crooks call people pretending to be from Microsoft and asking for control of their computer.

Now security experts Malwarebytes are warning that scammers have a new target: smartphone and tablet users. And they are targeting them with some pretty clever tactics. Say you have an issue with your phone and you search for some answers, these guys are buying ads that turn up in your search results that look fairly legit.

When you tap the ad, you see this pleasant looking tech support rep. She wouldn't scam you, would she?

But when you call that number...

From The Archives

Question: "I just got my latest cell phone bill and one of the line items is 'upgrade fee'. Can you please tell me what this is for?"

Answer: In simplest terms, a cell phone upgrade fee means that at some point within that billing cycle you received a new phone from the company at a discount, and the company has charged you a fee to help offset those upgrading costs. Here's the tricky part… even if your phone is NOT technically an upgrade (for instance if you had an Iphone 4S and you got a new Iphone 4S) or even a "downgrade" (for instance, going from a Samsung Galaxy S3 to a Samsung Rugby basic phone), you will still be charged an "upgrade" fee if you were given a discount on your phone.

What are the rules for an upgrade?

PS4 vs. Xbox One Part 1: The History Of The Console Wars

In this corner… weighing in at just over $500 USD is the latest videogame juggernaut from Sony… the Playstation 4 (PS4).

The Playstation, originally introduced in 1994, was originally designed to be a CD-drive for Nintendo's second-generation of console, the Super NES. However, Nintendo decided that they would go with Phillips for their CD-ROM technology. This resulted in Sony becoming a rival to Nintendo instead of a partner. The next generation of this console, the logically-named Playstation 2 was released in 2000, along with a smaller, more streamlined version of the original, called the PSone. The PS2 would go on to become the best selling console of all time. Keeping to their release structure and naming pattern, the Playstation 3 was released in 2006. In 2013, the most recent iteration of the behemoth, the Playstation 4 was released in time for Christmas. Inside the box is the PS4 console, one Dual-shock 4 wireless controller, an HDMI cable, a power cable, a wired mono headset and a USB charging cable for the controller.

In this corner, weighing in at just under $500 USD is the latest from console upstart Microsoft, the Xbox 1.

Tapestry

Tapestry is an interesting literature project for phones. It's all about providing a unique way to share stories as creators and readers. Check out the About Tapestry page for the full explanation of how Tapestry came to be and its intentions.

I adore using this on my phone. It's great for downtime between working and sitting in class, or waiting in the atm line at the bank, etc. You just tap to move through a story, and you have to do it with intention because there's no going back, so it forces you to be present in the act of reading. The app is free to download and available for Android devices and iDevices.

I also love that while it was designed with being read on mobile phones in mind that there is still a web version for people who don't have smart phones. So if you don't have a smart phone or its charging or something, you can come to the web page and dive right into the featured stories on the main page. Instead of tapping to navigate through the stories, you'll click.

If you click Explore near the top of the page a drop down menu appears that will let you select via the categories Entertainment, Experimental, Inspiration, Kids, Literature, and News.

If you want to create your own, just click the Write Your Own button. On the page you'll find four tutorials to the different ways you can create a Tapestry of your own. Once you've clicked through all the tutorials, you can use the button below it to create that style of Tapestry.

So what are you waiting for? Go share your stories today, and read stories that have already been shared too!

One More Big Deal

If You're At The Airport, You're In a Hurry!

This Laptop Case Keeps You Moving!

Amazing Neoprene 15" Laptop Case With SECURITY FAST PASS!

Get Through Screenings Instantly! Never Miss a Flight!

Security Fast Pass Keeps Your Laptop Protected...

...But Readily Available For Screenings! It's PERFECT!

And It's Neoprene, Baby!

That Means Durability, Quality, And Softness All In One!

Everyone Needs One...

From students to business professionals, if you're carrying a laptop around with you, you've gotta have a case.

This is no surprise.

And most people that have a laptop already have a carrying case, so what make this one better?

THE SECURITY FAST PASS!

This thing is awesome!

If you've been in an airport in the last decade, you know what it's like. Security checking that, screening this, and rummaging through everything else.

It's a pain, and if you don't have a case designed to get through them, you're running the risk of some bonehead ripping your stuff up or damaging your electronics when they require you to empty all the contents out!

Specially designed for screenings, this case lets you keep your laptop protected but easily accessible to get YOU through the airport in record time.

The clear casing can go right through the screening without requiring you to remove your laptop!

That means you get through faster, and you don't risk any damage at all!

After all, who has ever said "Oh yeah, I'm at the airport but I've got ALL the time in the world!"

NOBODY!

Plus, if you're toting your expensive laptop around all day in some canvas or nylon bag, you're asking for trouble. Not only are these materials subpar, they're also weak and susceptible to tears.

These days, NEOPRENE is the ONLY way to go! Most everybody knows that by now - that's why the big box stores charge around $50 for one. Well...we've got a QUALITY neoprene laptop case for a fraction of that!

Lightweight, High Quality Protection!

The reason everyone is switching to Neoprene materials is simple: it's soft to the touch yet strong as steel. It'll never rip, tear or let you down, and it's resistant to moisture. And since it's soft to the touch, you can securely carry your laptop in it without worrying about those awful microscratches that you can get from the likes of nylon or canvas.

It's also FLEXIBLE! It's a snug, secure, SLEEK looking fit that won't leave a bunch of sloppy looking extra material. That means that it looks good without compromising on quality!

Sleek and Secure! Featuring a soft but STONG carry handle it's the PERFECT LAPTOP BAG!

One Day Only BLOWOUT Price!

Ok, here's the deal. One of our suppliers approached us with a single large shipment and we're able to let them go for a wholesale price - but only for today!

Stream Crossing

Why did the grizzly cross the stream? Well, it's a bit like this. I came upon these two while searching for a large male grizzly I'd encountered the day before. However, Yellowstone is never quite the same from day to day, and instead this morning she granted me…(More)

Nose To Nose

This was captured shortly after I drove into Yellowstone from Gardiner. Normally, expectations tend to be low as you make the 5 mile or so drive from Gardiner to Mammoth, but today would prove an exception to that rule. As I drove along, admiring the freshly fallen snow, I rounded a corner and spotted a group of elk congregating in an area known as the "Chinese Gardens". I wasted no time... (More)

Hard Turn

It all started when I spotted a nice group of pronghorn with a good number of seemingly frisky bucks on the side of a large hill. Initially they were wary, but it wasn't long before they were ignoring me and going about their business. There wasn't too much action at first, and I busied myself with a few snapshots of some of the better looking animals – and then a buck burst into a run after one of the females! (More)
