Tablet & Phone Storage - Less Than You Think

Tablets are certainly a hot product currently, and the price goes up with the amount of included storage space. The same goes for cell phones. For the same tablet or phone, you may pay $50 or more for an extra 16GB of internal storage.

However, many aren't aware that when they are purchasing a product that includes internal storage that a portion of that space is dedicated to the operating system and preinstalled software. It could be a large portion of that storage, in fact. For example, it's been announced that a 64 GB Surface Pro tablet only has 29 GB of space available to users, and the Galaxy S4 advertises 16 GB of space, but only 9GB is available to users.

All tablets and phones will have this issue, although some may a have lesser percentage available than others. In a recent study done in the United Kingdom, percentages of actual storage space on various products were studied and listed. As you can see, it varies between operating system and manufacturers.

When shopping for tablets and phones, if you are concerned about storage, look for expandable storage options. Just remember, what is listed as built-in storage is not all available for you to use!

Yahoo! Mail Brings Back Tabs

When Yahoo! redesigned its mail service back in October, a lot of users were not happy with the changes. One of the biggest complaints, Yahoo! Mail's tab feature was removed.

The tabs allowed users to have several open e-mails at the same time and to switch back and forth easily between them by selecting a tab.

Now the company is admitting it made a mistake. Jeff Bonforte from Yahoo wrote on the Yahoo! Mail Blog:

"When we launched the new version of Mail in October, we removed Tabs. One of the things you told us that annoyed you about tabs is that the more you had open, the harder they were to manage, and you wanted multitasking to be easy. With your feedback, we launched Recent view to help you jump between emails, drafts and search results more easily, but many of you still missed tabs. So we're bringing back tabs, but this time, they're a bit smarter."

Here's how get tabs back to your Yahoo! Mail. In the inbox, select the drop-down arrow next to view on the right side of the inbox.

From the menu, choose Tabs.

Once activated, you'll be able to have multiple e-mails open and easily switch between them.

There's also a new feature. You'll find a drop-down arrow beside the last tab.

On that menu, you'll see all of tabs you have open and a Preview All option.

Preview All gives you a quick look at all of your tabs. It's a great feature if you have multiple table open and need to find something quickly. You can just click or tap on the preview to go to the message you want.

With all the complaints about the redesign and a major service outage that resulted in CEO Marissa Mayer issuing a public apology not only for the outage, but for the way Yahoo! handled it, the company needs all the goodwill it can get from its users.

Help! What Kind Of Tablet Do I Need?

Charlotte writes:

I need to choose a tablet or something. I realize I know very little. We want to read books, but I realize there are tablets out there that will do more than the Kindles and Nooks do. I suspect the prices are similar. What is a Nexus? I really do not know what I need, but I do need help.

First of all Charlotte, Nexus is a kind of Android tablet. It's the name used for tablets manufactured by Google, the owners of the popular Android tablet operating system. Android is an operating system for tablets and smartphones, much in the same way Windows and iOS are operating systems for computers.

Kindles and Nooks are also Android tablets, but with specialized versions of the Android system that have been altered to put the emphasis on certain products and services. Kindles emphasize Amazon, while Nooks emphasize books and other services from Barnes and Noble.

From The Archives

John from Rock Hill, SC writes "I keep getting a pop-up from Adobe Flash Player on all my webpages that says "Adobe wants to store info on your computer". When I click on "deny" it just keeps popping back up. When I click on setting and then on "do not show this again" it goes away till I change webpages, and then shows back up. How do I get rid of this pop-up? It's driving me nuts.

Hi, John. Thanks for the great question.

Well, the good news is that this is really an answer with no bad news.

To begin with, I can only think of two reasons that you'd deny this: you think that it may be malicious (and, with the recent security glitch with Java, who could blame you) or you're afraid that it's going to take up permanent room on your computer drive. Neither of these are true. It IS a feature of Adobe that allows the webpage to take up more space on your hard drive temporarily in order to run an Adobe script on the page, or allow the webpage to display correctly.

The reason that it only goes away temporarily is because you are not changing the setting in your computer, you are changing the settings for that webpage for that session only. There is a way to change this by default in your computer's settings.

Doctor's Office Still Using XP: Should I Say Anything?

Helen from NYC writes:

I've noticed in two of my doctors' offices that their computers still have Windows XP Professional. I did mention to one of the employees that XP will no longer have tech support after April. What suggestions do you have for notifying them directly if the employee doesn't do anything?

First of all, Helen…SHARP EYE! That's a great catch on your part, especially considering the amount of personal information your doctor has stored in the office computer system. I'd speak to your doctor or the office manager directly and ask them when they plan to upgrade. And if not, have they purchased some type of third-party security support? There is some very expensive third-party security support available for businesses, but generally not for home users. Microsoft is ending security support for Windows XP on April 8, 2014. That means these systems will be a prime target for people looking to steal information.

Stream Crossing

Why did the grizzly cross the stream? Well, it's a bit like this. I came upon these two while searching for a large male grizzly I'd encountered the day before. However, Yellowstone is never quite the same from day to day, and instead this morning she granted me…(More)

Nose To Nose

This was captured shortly after I drove into Yellowstone from Gardiner. Normally, expectations tend to be low as you make the 5 mile or so drive from Gardiner to Mammoth, but today would prove an exception to that rule. As I drove along, admiring the freshly fallen snow, I rounded a corner and spotted a group of elk congregating in an area known as the "Chinese Gardens". I wasted no time... (More)

Hard Turn

It all started when I spotted a nice group of pronghorn with a good number of seemingly frisky bucks on the side of a large hill. Initially they were wary, but it wasn't long before they were ignoring me and going about their business. There wasn't too much action at first, and I busied myself with a few snapshots of some of the better looking animals – and then a buck burst into a run after one of the females! (More)
