In The News 01-10-2014 8.1 Poised To Pass Vista Windows 8.1 in just about to pass Windows Vista as the 4th ranked desktop operating system. Currently Vista has 3.61% of the market while Windows 8.1 is catching up fast at 3.6%. Windows 8 and 8.1 combined stand at about 10%. Windows 7 has the lead with almost 48% of users running that operating system.
XP is still hovering around 30%, which is troubling considering that security support ends in less that 90 days on April 8. Hackers Target Snapchat Hackers targeted the popular Snapchast app, posting names and phone numbers of over 4 million users. They got the information through a weakness in the app that has since been patched by the company.
However, these hackers say they had no malicious intent, but did it to highlight the security vulnerability that they felt the company was taking too long to patch. They blocked out the last two digits of the phone numbers and say they aren't going to release those just yet. Google Says Goodbye To Bump Bump is a popular contact and file-sharing app that works for both Android and iPhones. It lets users share information simply by bumping phones together. The app has 125 million users and Google just bought it in September. Now they're shutting down the app at the end of January and users will have only 30 days to export their contacts. Google has a history of buying popular services and shutting them down. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Lonnie from Texas writes: I wish to install Thunderbird on a Windows 8 computer and I wonder if Thunderbird will work in Windows 8. Lonnie, the latest version of Thunderbird should work fine with Windows 8. The only drawback is that when you choose the "share" function in the Metro/Modern interface, it will not bring up Thunderbird as an e-mail option.
For those not familiar with Thunderbird, it is a free e-mail client (similar Microsoft Mail and Outlook Express) that allows you to download your e-mail messages to your computer. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
Karen from Idaho writes: I want to get rid of the stupid charm bar in and especially the "clock" that keeps popping up in my way. The charm bar needs to be transparent not wipe out what you are trying to read and made narrower. And the clock can go completely after all it is down in the corner of the screen! I have found no way to shut it off. Nor have I found a way to narrow the charms bar and make it transparent. When I want it is when it decides to hide completely. And after 7 months I still hate Win 8 and advise others not to purchase. Karen, the Charms Bar is only supposed to display when you select it and it should disappear as soon as you click or tap off it. You activate them in one of two ways. Either by swiping from the right or by moving your mouse or touchpad pointer to the upper or lower right corner.
Try to keep your mouse away from the very far right corners and stay away from the very far right of your touchpad when you're using Windows 8.1. It sounds like you are accidentally activating it. I've not experienced this issue myself with Windows 8.1, but it seems some touchpads on certain computer models are very sensitive. But don't worry, it's really easy to turn off. You will need to start with that dreaded Charms Bar and type Mouse and touchpad settings. Then tap or click on the results.
The PC and devices screen will open. Select Corners and edges on the left.
You'll see this screen with App switching and Corner navigation options.
Turn Corner navigation off by grabbing the little slider and moving it to Off.
That should make your Windows 8 experience more pleasant. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Lisa from Massillon, Ohio writes: Hello, When I try to open internet explorer I get a runtime error. I have taken my home page back to the default but nothing works. If I right click on explorer and choose in private browsing and then go to the webpages I want by typing each one in and logging in then it works. I am using Windows 7 and internet explorer 10. Can you help? This behavior is usually caused by a hardware or software problem that is preventing Internet Explorer 10 from starting normally. Runtime errors are also sometimes caused by incompatible HTML code. One solution is to disable script debugging. 1. Open IE, click the "Tools" button and then choose "Internet Options" from the menu.
2. When the Internet Options window opens, Select the "Advanced" tab and then uncheck the "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)," "Disable script debugging (Other)" and "Display a notification about every script error" boxes.
3. Click "Apply" and then "OK" to apply the new settings and close the Internet Options window. Restart Internet Explorer to see if this solution solved the problem. If you still receive runtime errors, you need to reset the Web browser. Richard from Mt. Dora, Florida asks: Is there a flash player for an android pad and phone that I could play all the games on pogo their website?? I know there's a aap for pogo but it only gives 4/5 games ones that I do not play. Can you help me and others for this?? Since Android no longer supports Flash, you won't find it in the Google Play Store, but you can download and install Flash from archived version on the Adobe Website. Open the settings menu on your tablet.
Select Security
Then put a check mark next to Unknown sources. This will allow you to install apps from sources other than the Google Play Store. If you choose this option, you'll need to make sure you only install content from legitimate sources.
Now open the browser on your tablet and search for Flash Player archive page.
When you get there scroll down and look for the version of Flash that works with the version of Android you're using. Or if you have something more recent than Android 4.0 , choose Flash Player 11.1. Just tap the link to download. When downloading is complete, open notifications and tap "install flash player.apk"
I can't promise this will work well. Flash is not supported by Android, so you may experience crashing and freezing. The games you are playing with Flash on a browser are not optimized for mobile devices the way Android apps are. And your mobile browser may not permit you to run flash. Google Chrome won't allow it, but Firefox mobile does permit it.
I can't vouch for your gameplay experience, but if you want to give it a try, see how it works for you. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Allen writes: Can you tell me how to set the clock or the calendar on my Google Android tablet. I'm sorry I'm not as techno-smart as you guys. Heck, I'm still trying to get out of the pencil and paper era. Could you please tell me how to set the clock and calendar on my tablet? Sure thing! You'll want to pull up your settings. Which you may access my tapping the gear icon, or depending on your device, selecting a menu button.
Where you'll find the clock and calendar will vary depending on the tablet, but browse around the settings and you're sure to find it. On this device, it was located under "More"
Tap Date and Time
You'll see this screen.
There are options to set the date
.. and Time
You can choose between a 24-hour clock or an AM/PM format.
And select a time zone.
Plus you adjust the date format according to your preferences.

Question: I don't like the way that replies back and forth about the same subject all bunch together into one message in Gmail. Is there a way to make the messages separate? Answer: I'm with you on this one. I dislike the groupings of messages in an inbox. Fortunately, there is a quick fix. Find that little gear symbol on the far right of your inbox and click Settings from the drop-down menu.
Under Settings, click the tab for General.
Scroll about half-way down the page until you find "Conversation View." Click "Conversation View Off."
Then go to the very bottom of the page and save changes. Hope that helps. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Reply vs. Reply All Using email seems like the easiest way to collaborate with a group. It can, however, be confusing (and potentially embarassing) if you do not effectively use your 'reply' and 'reply all' function. Reply should be used when you want to send a message in reply to one person. With an email sent to mutliple people, hitting reply will send your email to the most recent sender. For example, Sharon receives an email from Bob that was sent to her and her friend, Linda. Before she saw the email, Linda did a 'reply all' that said 'Sounds good to me!' If Sharon hits reply, only Linda will receive her email. Reply All should be used when you want to send a message in reply to the entire group. Do not use this for personal comments that should/do not need to be seen by the other users involved in the conversation. Different email programs use different options, but here are a few examples of where to find the options. This way, you'll make sure you're sending to the right person/people. Gmail
Outlook
Yahoo

The Real Damage This handy tool will help you visualize just how much more you're paying for that item you want to buy with a credit card. There was a time in my life when this tool would have been very handy to have. When I'd just charge things to my credit cards without really thinking about how much that would cost me over time. Now you can do just that. You put in the price of what you want to charge, then enter in on the table below how much your APR is and pick from the preloaded options for how you're paying your cards off and then click the What's my Damage? button. It will then tell you how much that item will really cost you. The example they provide is an item that has a cost of $75.00. The default interest rate on the page is 15% APR with a balance of $1200, where you're paying the minimum payment and 1% of the balance. It makes that $75.00 item really a $168.75 item in the end. This is a great way to get perspective on your spending, by allowing you to visualize how much things will really cost you. So if saving money was one of your New Year's resolutions this might just help you put the credit card back in your wallet. When you arrive, just scroll down the page to find the latest articles featured for your perusal. You can also swap out the latest articles for trending articles by clicking on Trending above them. What I really love about this site is how it combines social media and new delivery. If you have a Twitter account you can follow Matter and get updates via your Twitter feed. If you don't have Twitter, that's fine too. You can browse the articles via the site just as easily. I love that they denote what the average reading time is so you know what sort of time commitment you're getting into before you click on the article's link. Sometimes I just don't have time right at the moment to read something that could take a half hour, and it's nice to know that up front. I lost track of time entirely, when I read an informative article on Geneaology, DNA Testing, and Privacy Concerns. You'll also find articles on Autism, Dream Studies, Technology, Surveillance, and much more that's just what was featured when I visited.
