Computers 101

Georgie Ann from Greenup writes:

I like to save recipes from Facebook by posting them to my wall. I went back to look for some and I couldn't find them at all. Where did they go? I did just like the instructions said and shared them and that said it would save it. What happened?

Many of us have seen those tempting recipes that advise us to share a photo to save it to our Facebook timeline.

So, after some time passes, you might decide to go back and look for that recipe. You head on over to your timeline by clicking on your name up at the top of the page.

Select the time frame, you'd like to search for your post in over on the right.

Up at the top of your timeline, you'll notice Highlights in a very small type with a drop-down menu beside it.

Click the arrow and you'll see the option to view all stories.

Check for those recipes now. Are they there? If not, there's another possibility. When you share something and it posts to your timeline, you really aren't saving it permanently. If the person who originally posted that photo or link decides to delete it at a later date or perhaps their Facebook account were to be deleted, that item would disappear.

So if I posted a photo detailing my recipe for slow cooker chicken barbecue and 800 people shared it and I five months later decided to delete that post -it would disappear from all of those people's timelines.

If you really want to save a recipe from Facebook for good, you'll need to save the photo and copy the text. I detailed the steps in this article.

On The Move

Lola writes:

I have a custom made desktop computer that is about 6 years old. Only thing ever needed replacing was the Hard Drive. It runs good and has no problems. I know it has enough ram and big enough Hard drive that is about 6 months old as well as a AMD Athlon dual core processor, and a Asus mother board. I know it can run windows 7 or 8.1 My question is this, Would I be smarter to simply have another computer made because of this ones age? One person told me I should and another says this one is fine to put the new windows on and I would be wasting money to buy a new one. So I thought I would ask for a third parties advice and could think of none better than you all to ask.
Thank you for your advice and for all the help you give people everyday.

Well to quote an old saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." If your computer is working well and it can handle the newer system, there's really no need to upgrade. As long as you've checked the requirements of those operating systems, you shouldn't have an issue. Do check, because there have been reports that some older AMD chips will not work with the 64 bit version of Windows 8.1

But, there would also be no harm in pricing a new computer. You might be able to get some bells and whistles you've been wanting a decent price and newer components may be more energy efficient, especially newer processors.

I would like to know how to use Thunderbird to read my Gmail account. I use Thunderbird to read my local ISP e-mail and would like to do the same with my Gmail account.

Answer:

Thunderbird, the free e-mail client available from Mozilla by clicking here, supports receiving and sending mail from any POP3 or IMAP e-mail provider. Adding your Gmail account to Thunderbird is simple.

Start by going to the Tools Menu in upper right-hand corner and click the arrow next to Options then click Account Settings.

In Account Settings, click Account Actions and then click Add Mail Account.

Today's Feature

Gum from Texas writes:

I read your article on reformatting the computer but i have a question. If iIreformat is it really taken back to like out of the box new status and if there is a virus, malware , spyware, key loggers or whatever on the unit in question, will that kill it all out or will they know where to come back to after realizing their questionable programs no longer are effective on their targets? Just wondering… thanks, Gum.

Hi, Gum. Thanks for the great question.

Viruses, malware, spyware, bugs, gremlins, junk… All designed to mess up your system and/or steal from you.

These things will implant themselves deep in your computer's files and registry, sometimes attacking immediately and sometimes sitting and waiting like a time bomb for you to hit a specific key or for a certain time and date to activate. Sometimes, like in the case of the Michaelangelo virus almost fifteen years ago, they are designed as elaborate practical jokes. More often, they are attacks specifically designed to steal your information for purposes of identity theft.

There are several remedies for these...

Beer Foam Volcano

I'm not a beer drinker, but I know a lot of people who do enjoy a good brew now and again. Heck, I even know people who like to brew their own at home. Because of that I've learned a lot about beer that a non-beer drinker wouldn't normally know, but I was really fascinated when I stumbled across this article on NPR.

The article investigates the science, in this case physics, behind why tapping or hitting a beer bottle will cause it to turn into a beer foam volcano.

I think I've spent fifteen minutes just watching the .GIF that greets you when you load into the page of someone tapping a beer bottle with another beer bottle and it erupting into foam. It's all kinds of mesmerizing.

Navigation is easy once you stop watching that .GIF, just scroll down the page and read the article and check out the animated diagrams created to help explain it.

That's all there is to it! I just thought it was nifty!

One More Big Deal

Dust, Smudges, Dirt, Grime...

The List Of Stuff That Wants To RUIN Your Possessions!

Keep Them In Pristine Condition The RIGHT Way!

Paper Towels Are WASTING Your Money & Time!

Meet The Smart Microfiber Cloth!

Clean & Polish Everything!

No Messy Sprays - Machine Washable!

THIS CLOTH IS FOR LIFE!

Wait, you still use paper towels?

Are you crazy, or do you just love wasting money?!

Wipe twice, throw 'em out.

Repeat a few times, the roll runs out, and you've just wasted $5! Now do it again every week (or sooner, depending on how fast you go through those things!)

And that's not even getting into the FACT that wood-based products like tissues and paper towels WILL scratch sensitive surfaces.

Your touchscreen phone? Your computer monitor? Your television? Your laptop screen? Your GLASSES?

Do NOT use regular paper towels or tissues on those! You'll just replace gross smudges with PERMANENT scratches!

(And NOTHING wipes off a scratch!)

You aren't cleaning those things when you do that - you're DESTROYING them!

You NEED the smartest microfiber cloth in the WORLD!

AND WE'VE GOT IT FOR $4.97!!!

For less than a burger and fries, you could keep ALL your sensitive electronics (plus every other surface, for that matter) safe and clean FOREVER!

If you use ONE roll of paper towels, you've already spent more for less benefit.

Now tell me that's not the best deal of 2014?!

Microfiber is just BETTER!

The most important part is NO SCRATCHES! Microfiber cloth is specially designed to be safe on ANY surface!

Besides, other wipes won't even get rid of the oily fingerprints and smudges. They just wipe it all over.

So instead of a fingerprint-sized unreadable section... your entire SCREEN gets covered in an oily gloss! That's gross and frustrating!

This amazing cloth takes ALL that stuff and removes it completely!

Smudges, grime, dust, dirt, fingerprints, everything!

Double Sided Means A Better Clean!

Use the plush side to get your device or surface clean!

Then follow it up with the silk side to make sure it's polished up and looking pristine!

You'll NEVER get a clean like this with inferior cloths and wipes! You need an expertly crafted microfiber cloth like this or you're just moving dirt around, not cleaning it!

NO LIQUIDS! NO SPRAYS! NO RISK!

After all, who likes chemicals?!

They're abrasive, potentially toxic, and can ruin the electronics of your device if you use too much!

This saves you the trouble, without sacrificing any cleaning power!

And with the anti-microbial coating, you won't have to worry about the REAL little things! Bacteria for mold and mildew are everywhere - this prevents your microfiber cloth from ever getting nasty!

When you've used it a bunch just throw it in the wash!

It's easy as pie to clean and you can use it over and over and over and over and over!

We found these online and NOBODY has 'em this cheap!

The lowest price we found anywhere was $10! We've got them for HALF that!

(And some places had 'em for WAY more!)

REMEMBER - IT'S ONLY $4.97!!

That's just a straight-up unbeatable price!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/9430

Do NOT wait - Tuesday the sale ends and these go to $8.97!!

Stream Crossing

Why did the grizzly cross the stream? Well, it's a bit like this. I came upon these two while searching for a large male grizzly I'd encountered the day before. However, Yellowstone is never quite the same from day to day, and instead this morning she granted me…(More)

Nose To Nose

This was captured shortly after I drove into Yellowstone from Gardiner. Normally, expectations tend to be low as you make the 5 mile or so drive from Gardiner to Mammoth, but today would prove an exception to that rule. As I drove along, admiring the freshly fallen snow, I rounded a corner and spotted a group of elk congregating in an area known as the "Chinese Gardens". I wasted no time... (More)

Hard Turn

It all started when I spotted a nice group of pronghorn with a good number of seemingly frisky bucks on the side of a large hill. Initially they were wary, but it wasn't long before they were ignoring me and going about their business. There wasn't too much action at first, and I busied myself with a few snapshots of some of the better looking animals – and then a buck burst into a run after one of the females! (More)
