Claire says: I received a tablet as a Christmas gift. I can access the Internet at the library and at the coffee shot with not problem. At home I get nothing. Do I live too far from town? Do I need cell phone service? I have a dial-up connection for my computer and it's slow. I much prefer the tablet.
You have Internet access at the library and coffee shop because they have a WiFi signal. Sounds like you're missing a crucial component for using a tablet at home: a router. A router is a fairly inexpensive device that plugs into your modem and generates a wireless Internet signal in your home.
Though since you have dial-up that might not be possible or practical. If it's possible you should consider getting a high-speed connection and a router. Check availability and pricing with companies that serve your area. A mobile hot spot ( a small device that generate WiFi) is also a possibility. Again, you would have to check availability and pricing with cell service providers that serve your area. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for using your tablet at locations that offer free WiFi. Fortunately there are a lot of them. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Tiles Not Working In Windows 8.1 Bud from Kentucky writes: I have windows 8.1 and all of my app tiles have quit working. I click on an app and it flashes to a black screen and doesn't do anything I have seen on the net where a lot of people have the same problem.Do you have any suggestions? Caroline from Delaware writes: I have windows 8.1 and I do not have the tiles as they call them on my screen and when I finally get them thru they are not active like clicking on them and doing something, what do I need to do. I do not have a touch screen as some do. First of all, check to make sure you have all of the latest Windows updates. Then we can move on to other possibilities. Some people have reported issues caused by a third party security software. Do your tiles have little arrows in the lower corner?
If so, go to the Windows store and try downloading and reinstalling them once more. Also try temporarily disabling your third-party security software and see if that makes any difference in how your tiles work. You can also try uninstalling and then reinstalling those apps that won't function. I know, that doesn't sound like fun. But try it with one app to see if it works. Search for Uninstall apps and select it.
Select an app from the list.
Choose uninstall.
Then go to the Windows App store and try reinstalling the app. Do this with one app and see if it works before uninstalling multiple apps. If that doesn't work, there may be a problem with your user account in Windows. Go to the Search Charm and type in "create an account."
Select the Create Account icon.
You'll see the option to Activate a guest account.
Hopefully, one of these solutions helps. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Dave from Illinois writes: My girlfriend and I have gotten new Windows 8.1 tablets for Christmas. We are plugging along learning how to use it. One problem we are having is. Using IE11 when we try to sign on to Yahoo Mail we get back a message stating that there is a setting in IE 11 that will not allow us to display the site requested. This also happens on other sites that require password authentication such as Facebook. I have downloaded FireFox and I am able to view these sites with it. Do you know what setting needs to be changed in IE 11 to allow viewing of these pages? You aren't the only person to report this problem. First, make sure all of your Windows 8.1 updates are up-to-date. That fixed the issue for some people. Others have found it was coming from the enhanced protection mode in Windows 8.1. Here's how to disable that feature. Open IE and choose Internet Options.
When the Internet Options window opens, select the advanced Tab. Want more? Just click WorldStart!
