Quick Tip

Jim from New Jersey writes:

I'm one of the XP hold-outs: I am not willing to upgrade $400 for a modern computer for downloading emails and basic web browsing.

My computer is somewhat limited and probably won't tolerate the upgrade to the next Windows version. What options do I have?

First of all Jim, I'd check out this article to learn about the tools Microsoft offers to help you see if your computer is up to an upgrade.

You're right, $400 in awful lot of money to spend for basic web browsing and e-mail. If that's all you want out of a computer, may I suggest you consider switching to a tablet?

A good basic Android tablet will more than meet your e-mail and web-browsing needs. We've offered several models here for around the $100 mark. You can certainly find a nice one for less than $200. There's also the option of an iPad, but the iPad Mini starts around the $300 mark and the larger models will run you as much as a good laptop. If you'd like to stick with Windows, there are Windows tablets starting at less than $200. You could also pickup a Chromebook laptop for around the $250 mark.

It WILL Happen To Everyone!

Backups Are The ONLY Way To Prevent Losing Your Data!

"But Steve... It's a PAIN To Backup!!"

NOT ANYMORE!

The Lexar Echo 8 GB Backup Drive!

It Does EVERYTHING For You!

Completely Automatic Backups!

Let The Flash Drive Do All The Work!

Plug It In! You're 99% Done!

(It Even Shows How Much Space You've Used!)

Hard Drives ALWAYS Crash!

There's only a few guarantees in life. Your hard drive crashing is one of those guarantees.

When they go, they take EVERYTHING they had with 'em!

AND THAT ALMOST ALWAYS SPELLS DISASTER!

What do you do when your hard drive crashes?

Well, there's two possible reactions...

If you guessed the one on the right... correct!

Why's she so happy? Because getting all her files back was THIS easy:

You simply take your handy Lexar 8GB back up flash drive and plug it into any computer. It automatically loads the files you backed up and you can get them ready to use again.

You don't lose a single file, and you don't spend the weekend wishing you had printed those vacation photos that you'll never get back.

Who would YOU prefer to be in that scenario?

There's only ONE reason not to back up data:

It USED to be hard.

It took a lot of time, it took expensive hardware or software, and it took some tech-savvy. You had to know file extensions, directories, the whole works.

NOT ANYMORE!

It's literally as easy as clicking your mouse!

See below:

The Lexar 8GB Instant Backup Flash Drive!

NO extra software. NO long set up. NO time consuming steps. All you do is plug it in and pick what you need to backup!

Could it BE any easier?

The first time you pop it in, it lets you choose automatic or specific folders. That's all there is to it! Your files are backed up and you're safe from disaster!

What's great is that it keeps ALL of your directories and folders right in the order you have them on your PC. So you'll know EXACTLY where to find them on the flash drive or after you back them up to another PC!

Think about everything you have on your computer: TONS of photos. ALL of your favorite music. Family videos and contact information.

How about work documents, important files, sensitive documents. Even your passwords, e-mails, favorite web pages... EVERYTHING!

After a crash, you can't get those photos back. The videos are now distant memories. And your passwords? Good luck remembering the ones you haven't had to type in for years.

BUT IF IT'S BACKED UP, YOU WON'T LOSE ANYTHING! PERIOD!

And with backing up this easy, you won't even have to think about it!

This DEFINES User Friendly!

Ultra Sleek, Ultra Secure, ULTRA FAST!

It looks, feels, and acts just like your standard flash drive (of course, standard flash drives can't hold a candle to this one) so you know it's gonna be easy and lightweight to move or store.

Plus, it has a retractable connector so you ALSO know it's gonna stay safe from any potential accidents!

IT WORKS JUST LIKE A REGULAR FLASH DRIVE TOO!

That's right - Just drag and drop files to it and use it like any other flashdrive! Talk about the best of both worlds!!

Take it anywhere! Back up any PC or laptop! Use it for EVERYTHING!

And if you're looking for fast, this thing is gonna BLOW YOU AWAY!

This flash drive is part of the Lexar "Ultra" series, their fastest USB 2.0 drives out there.

Simply put? USB 2.0 has NEVER been faster!

Last but not least: IT'S SECURE!

When you back up anything on this drive, you can choose to encrypt it and guard it with a password of your choice! Nobody but you or those you trust get access to YOUR files.

So all your tax, financial, and confidential documents? You can back them up too without worrying! FINALLY!

All those passwords on your PC don't mean a thing if you don't have SECURE backups.

But with this Lexar, it's not a problem.

A Backup Drive For UNDER $13! WOW!

If you go anywhere to try and get a backup drive, you'll be looking $40 for the BARE MINIMUM! And those are bulky, heavy external hard drives that you really can't move or store.

I'd like to add... the ones I got in to test have quickly became my new backup drives for my photos and music. They're just so easy and useful!

You will NOT find a faster, more convenient backup drive out there for just $12.97 with FREE US SHIPPING anywhere else!

These are simply one of the coolest devices I've ever seen. PLEASE don't miss out on this deal. We only have so many and once they're gone... that's it.

Hack Your Mac Part 2

Hidden within the confines of the elegant Mac OS X, is a powerful Unix based terminal that allows you to fully utilize your system and its resources. This tutorial is aimed at helping you become familiar with some useful commands that will help you customize your OS, secure your system and entice you to dive deeper into the operating system. All that's required is Mac OS X, and a little curiosity.

This tutorial will be broken up into four parts. The first part explained how to utilize and explore the terminal, This part will consist of security related commands or commands that can be used to secure your system. The third part will deal with the customization of your operating systems, and some useful commands you can use to impress your colleagues and friends. Lastly, this tutorial will explore some of the tools utilized to test your Mac and it's performance. Just to reiterate, all that is required is Mac OS X and a little curiosity.

Part 2 Security:

Blank Desktop Command is more of a superficial command however it protects your desktop from prying eyes. This will prevent any icons for files showing on your desktop.

Enable Command:

  • defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop –bool false

  • killall Finder

Reversal Command

  • defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop –bool true

  • killall Finder

Note: (The killall Finder commands restarts the Finder manually)

The Securely Delete command is a useful one for securely deleting items. Typically when an item is deleted from your Mac, it stays there there and is only overwritten when new data is added.. The following command gives you a way to securely delete free space on your machine. So in the event you were giving away your, Mac or had some information you truly didn't want anyone to see, you would run this command to securely erase previously deleted items.

Enable Command:

  • diskutil secureErase freespace 3/Volumes/hard-drive-name

Note: (Replace "hard-drive-name" with the name of your harddrive, this will also take some time so it's best to run this command when your not actively using your machine.)

Show All Hidden Files, the last command we'll explore in the security section, is pretty common, however it's listed simply because it's importance can't be understated, the ability to view hidden files on your Mac. The more you explore your curiosity the more you will be intrigued by what you find.

Enable Command:

  • defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE

  • killall Finder

Reversal Command:

  • defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE

  • killall Finder

In part three of our series, we'll look at ways to customize your OS.

On The Move

Deb writes:

I'm not sure exactly what questions I will have, but my friend bought a wireless printer to use with her iPad and iPhone. She asked if I can hook them up for her. Is that possible?

Deb, congratulations on being appointed to volunteer tech support. It can sometimes be a thankless job. The good news is that it's perfectly possible. Let's hope your friend purchased a printer that is AirPrint compatible. That enables printing from Macs, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch without the need to install drivers.

Your friend will need to have the latest version of iOS installed on the phone and iPad. Printermodels by Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, Fuji Xeros, Gestetner, HP, Infotec, Kyocera, Lanier, Leveno, Lexmark, Oki Dta, Olivetti, NRG, NTT, RICOH, Samsung, Savin, Sharp, TA Triumph, Toshiba ad Xerox all support Airprint.

ou should be able to find instructions for connecting the particular printer among the printer's documentation or on the manufacturer's website.

Then printing is just a matter of selecting...

Posting Photos Of Your Pet Could Make You A Target Of ID Thieves

Your Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Instagram account could be the perfect tool for thieves looking to steal your identity. Why? Because of the information you share. Research by Next Advisor showed that 68% of people with public profiles shared their birthday and 18% offered up their phone numbers out there for anyone who might come across it. Those are two very handy pieces of information for scammers.

Other big help for crooks: photos of your pets, your relationship status and information about where you went to school or grew up. When you go to retrieve or change a password, you will often get asked a question like "What was the name of your first pet?" or "Where did you go to elementary school?"

Photoshop Elements: Crop And Lighting

The first article in this series about Photoshop Elements was an overview of the Editor, with a look at the Quick Edit feature. This installment explores two editing basics in Full Edit; cropping, and adjusting light and contrast. By cutting away the unnecessary components in an image, cropping makes it possible to improve composition, fit to a particular ratio (5 x 7, 8 x 10, etc.), or both. Light and contrast can be adjusted on images, or on layers within images, so both crop and lighting tools are critical to many editing tasks.

The appearance of the interface is set by items checked in the Window menu. What will appear from the menu below, are Tools, Navigator, and Panel Bin (all checked). Tools and Panel Bin open by default, but Navigator is a personal preference.

Amanda's Coolsite

My 80s TV

I'm going to issue a warning right up front with this site. It is addicting! I had to seriously limit the amount of time I spent there in order to write it up, because it was so easy to become engrossed in a television program.

When you arrive at the site you'll be greeted with a vintage looking television, and have a list of different types of programming on the right side of the TV. The first thing I did was click the None link beneath the list to uncheck everything.

That way you can just select the type of programming you want from the list. Your options are Cartoons, Comedy, Commercials, Drama, Gameshows, Kids, Movies, Music, News, Other, Soaps, Specials, Sports, Talkshows, and Trailers. The numbers next to them show you how many are in that category.

After you've selected your options, just click Power to turn the television set on. And then you can watch whatever randomly came up. Or you can use the channel buttons to surf through your options.

I really enjoyed surfing through the programming, so much so I lost track of time checking out cartoons and comedy, so check this site out when you have time to watch some television!

Windshield Wipers Can't Do The Job Alone!

Repel-It Windshield Treatment Clears Things Up!

Convenient Wipe Lasts For Up To Six Months! No Streaking!

Car Dealers Charge Outrageous Prices For This Treatment

We've Got It For Under $5 !

You know how it is, you're driving in the rain and it looks like someone is throwing buckets of water right onto your windshield. Your windshield wipers are doing the best they can, but you still can't see a thing. IT IS DANGEROUS!

And it's not like those wipers are falling apart, you just bought them. And if you're out driving on the highway with big trucks throwing water back at you, it can be pretty darn scary.

The solutions is Repel-It Windshield Treatment. It makes your windshield hydrophobic. That means water (and the grime and gunk that can splash up on your windshield with it) will bead up and make it much easier for your windshield wipers to swoop it away.

It's not just rain that will stay away... Dust and bugs are much easier to clean off.

EVEN SNOW AND ICE will be easier to take off.

Where I live, there's a saying. If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. We get it all. Rain, snow, ice, sleet... We'll go from 70 degrees and rain on Wednesday to 20 degrees and snow on Friday. And let me tell you, I end up doing a lot of driving not matter what the weather is like. This treatment is absolutely perfect.

Look at the difference it makes!

TREATED UNTREATED

You could have it done at your car dealer, but look what they charge you! I grabbed this shot from an actual car dealer's website. the price starts at $29.95 and you know how they love to tack on extras.

Repel-It Windshield Treatment is only $4.97 !

This durable treatment can last for up to six months! Plus it's a wipe, so it's super easy and convenient to apply to your windshield.

Not only will this improve your vision, your wipers will last longer because they'll have a lot less work to do.

There's no bottles or applicators to fuss with! Just open the convenient package and apply the treatment with the disposable wipe for streak-free protection!

We managed to get a special deal on these, so we've got a limited quantity and at $4.97 , they won't last long.

And if your order is over $5, you get FREE US Shipping!

So click the store link below and get yours now!

Stream Crossing

Why did the grizzly cross the stream? Well, it's a bit like this. I came upon these two while searching for a large male grizzly I'd encountered the day before. However, Yellowstone is never quite the same from day to day, and instead this morning she granted me…(More)

Nose To Nose

This was captured shortly after I drove into Yellowstone from Gardiner. Normally, expectations tend to be low as you make the 5 mile or so drive from Gardiner to Mammoth, but today would prove an exception to that rule. As I drove along, admiring the freshly fallen snow, I rounded a corner and spotted a group of elk congregating in an area known as the "Chinese Gardens". I wasted no time... (More)

Hard Turn

It all started when I spotted a nice group of pronghorn with a good number of seemingly frisky bucks on the side of a large hill. Initially they were wary, but it wasn't long before they were ignoring me and going about their business. There wasn't too much action at first, and I busied myself with a few snapshots of some of the better looking animals – and then a buck burst into a run after one of the females! (More)
