Quick Tip

Robert from Mesz, AZ writes:

I use my older PC, running Windows XP, for music only. Does Linux OS have any program like Windows Media Center or can Windows media Center run on the Linux OS?

Janice from Oklahoma writes:

Does the Linux platform Ubuntu have a media player?

The first thing that comes to mind is the wonderful VLC Player, an outstanding free program that we discussed in this article. There are other media players available as well, depending on which version of Linux you choose to go with. If you choose Ubuntu, you can find options in their app store.

Protect Yourself From RFID "Wireless Identity Theft!"

These Tough Credit Card Holders Shield Your Cards!

On Top Of That, They're Just Some Good Old Shock Protection!

Never Worry About Bending Or Breaking Your Cards!

Sometimes Technology Makes It TOO Easy...

You know how it is, something comes along and makes stuff simpler for everyone.

Well, guess who's part of "everyone"? Thieves.

Credit cards and debit cards can be scanned by all sorts of devices.

Heck, there's even new electronics you can attach to your phone to let you process a credit card payment anywhere you are, right on your smartphone!

You better believe it that thieves know how this stuff works.

According to recent articles, using nothing more than the same tools a payment processor uses, thieves could potentially make a tool to scan your card in the time it takes them to walk past you on the street!

Even an ordinary laptop can utilize radio waves to copy and clone cards - that's a scary thought!

Do YOU know what kind of information your credit card has stored in it?

But guess what?

Protecting yourself is just as easy!

This RFID-resistant credit card holder encases your cards and prevents anyone from just walking by and causing you to be a victim of "wireless identity theft" (look it up, it's real!)

Tough and portable, these security wallets shield your contactless cards from all sorts of unsavory scanning.

Basically, if your cards are in here, you're not the "easy target" anymore. Now you're protected!

And this isn't just for one or two cards, either!

THIS HAS 8 SLEEVES!

That should be more than enough for anyone's important cards! Credit cards, IDs, debit cards, anything!

Put them in here and you won't have to worry at all!

Whatever color you get, it'll look great! Just check 'em out!

And honestly, it's just a great way to protect your cards, too!

If you've ever had a credit card break or get damaged, you know why that's important! You're stuck having to call and inform them to cancel it, that you need a replacement, and then you have to wait WEEKS just to get the new card!

Some of us rely on those debit cards so we don't have to walk around with all our cash 24/7!

Protects Your Money Before You Use It!

Seeing as it's only $4.97 with FREE US shipping on any order over $5... you're already protecting your money!

That's one dirt-cheap way to prevent identity theft!

Computers 101

Brenda from Australia writes:

So how do I uninstall Windows XP and install Ubuntu and do you have a step by step procedure for us?

Brenda, you are one of many to ask that question. So let's look at how to accomplish this task. I'll warn you up front, it's not super-simple. But it is a good alternative for XP users who are looking for the least expensive way to replace their operating system. We discussed the advantages of Linux Ubuntu in this article.

What we're giving you is basic installation guide on how to install Ubuntu over Windows XP in a very simple way. At the end of this tutorial you will have a latest version of Ubuntu running successfully on your computer.

There are 2 ways you can install Ubuntu on your computer: Booting through a CD/DVD or through a USB drive.
Ubuntu is a free distribution of Linux. Unlike Windows, you do not need to pay a single penny for Ubuntu. So we just need to simply download Ubuntu ISO from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop and choose your desired Ubuntu version and your required bit.

You can choose between 32 bit and 64 bit (if you are using a partition with less space, then certainly opt for 32bit option). You can choose between Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with long term support release or you can choose Ubuntu 13.10 which is an updated version filled with exiting new Linux materials and applications. Download the ISO free of cost and get ready to burn it.

After downloading the ISO image you can either burn it on a CD/DVD or create a bootable USB stick through the instructions below:

If you are burning the ISO into a CD/DVD

Use your default windows image burner or your favorite burning software (like Nero) into a CD or DVD.

Note: Latest image file of Ubuntu is around 870Mb so it's better to burn the ISO onto a DVD rather than a CD.

If you want to create a bootable USB stick

Note: Make sure to keep a backup of the existing USB files before moving forward.

Simply go to http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ and download Universal USB Installer. Follow the picture shown below to download.

  • Open the downloaded file and click on "I Agree" button and proceed.

  • You will be able to see a create button on the next window. Click on it.

  • Now you have to choose Ubuntu from other options as shown in the picture below.

  • Next step is to browse the Ubuntu ISO file from your local drive. Click the "Browse" option and go to the folder where Ubuntu ISO is downloaded and select it.

  • Then choose the Drive in which your USB stick is inserted i.e. D: or E: or F: or etc.

  • Finally, click on create and wait for the installation to be completed.

As soon as it is done you will be ready with a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu installation files.

Tomorrow, in Part 2 of this article, we'll move on to the installation process.

Managing Files On Your iPad

Gary from Rhode Island writes:

How do I find out the names of the files on my tablet? And then access a given file?

Open in from Safari on the iPad

f you have been using a computer for any length of time, you will probably have become accustomed to accessing your files with a traditional folder management system in Windows or OS X. You create, or download files, and then store them on your desktop or in a folder somewhere so that you can get to them when you need them. However things are not quite as simple on an iPad tablet. At least, not at first.

Where are the Files Stored on my iPad?

Apple takes a different approach from what you're used to on a computer. The iPad has no visible file structure, and any files that you have are really only accessible through a compatible app. So, if you create a file on your iPad, it will really only be immediately accessible from the app that you created it with or an app that you send the file to.

If you attempt to download a file when you are online, it will open...

Tony from U.S. writes:

Question: Hi! I would like your help on how I can set a timer like they do at the Public Library with their computers so that when my kids turn on the PC it will shut off or prevent them from using it after a certain time. Can you help me?

If you're using Windows, you can control a variety of settings for the kids. First go either to the Start Menu in Windows 7 or the search function on the Windows 8 Charms Bar and start typing "Parental." Windows 7 should show you Parental Controls while Windows 8 will bring up Family Safety.

You'll be give the option to start a Windows Live Family Safety Account. This is a free service. You will have to log in with a Windows Live ID or create a Windows Live account. I'm not going to walk you step-by-step through the entire process as the set-up process for your family account does that pretty effectively. Once you're set up, you can choose which users to set parental controls for on that device.

Microstock Photography Dos and Don'ts

Microstock photographs are low-priced and royalty-free. And you can earn a few dollars more by selling your pictures to many stock photo sites online. Many of you might not be professionals, but that shouldn't mean you don't have pictures that are sellable. Here are a few dos and don'ts, so you can make the most of the pictures you've already taken or are planning to take.

Go back to where it started

By this, I mean stepping back in time and going through all the pictures you've taken from the time you took up photography, including those you took with your point and shoot camera. You never know what pictures might find the stock photography website owner's fancy. But that may be thousands of pictures you have to sift through. So dedicate just 10 minutes of your time every day just before you wind up your work or start your day. And here is where using Lightroom and Picasa helps. Mark pictures that are good and you are good to go. After that, it becomes easier to locate them later. Once you make this your routine...

Amanda's Coolsite

Planwise

Another big resolution people have at the beginning of the year is to save money, travel more, or make big purchases. I'm included in that. I want to start saving for a trip to Europe when I graduate next year as a reward for all my hard work.

But I have to balance that with also saving for the down payment for our next lease vehicle. To do this, I need help keeping track of everything. And while Mint is awesome. It's not really working for me, because I have to micromanage a lot of it because my cards aren't supported yet. So I went looking for another solution and found Planwise.

When you arrive at the site, I recommend checking out the video upon your arrival to the site, because it does an awesome job of explaining how it works and the scope of what you can use it for. Once you've done that and checked out all the features below the video, click Launch Planwise Now button.

This will whisk you away to the interface. If it doesn't pop up on its own click Tour to get a guide to how the space works. You'll set your currency, current bank balance, take home pay, your monthly spending, and then you can add a future plan. So in my case, I added all my information and then added the trip to Europe. What I really love is you can turn plans on and off. So say we have a vet emergency, I can add that and turn the trip off.

Once you've made a plan, you'll need to save it. To register you can either do so at the end of the tour, or you can click the red Your Plans Aren't Being Saved button at the top of the screen.

This is a great savings tool, check it out today!

After all, it's not every day you see a guy with three extra legs (tripod) and a huge extra eye (camera / lens). I could see... (More)
