Quick Tip

Bob writes:

I still have an old computer with Windows 95 hanging around, would Linux Ubuntu work here? Also how about the VLC media player?

For Ubuntu 12.04 the recommended system requirements are a 700 mHz processor (Intel Celeron or better), 512 megabytes of RAM and a 5 gigabyte hard-drive. You'll also need VGA capable of 1024 x 768 screen resolution and CD/DVD drive or USB port to complete the installation.

There are also the alternatives of Xubuntu or Lubuntu for lighter weight systems. Minimum requirments for Xubuntu would be 512 MB of RAM, 5 GB of hard drive space and a graphics card and monitor capable of 800 x 600 resolution.

Your Windows 95 computer probably doesn't meet these minimums. VLC Player is available for systems running Windows XP SP2 and later. If you could get Ubuntu up and running on a computer, you could run the Ubuntu version of VLC Player.

Still Fumbling Around In The Dark?

Accidentally Key Your Own Car or Door?

You Need a Light That's With Your Key 24/7!

HOW ABOUT ONE THAT'S ON YOUR KEY!

WOW! THAT'S BRILLIANT!

Slip It On Your Key And Have a Light Whenever You Need It!

No More Hunting For Keyholes In The Dark!

It Even Makes Tough Locks Less Painful To Open!

AND IT'S ONLY $1.97!

"Wow, that's simple!"

So there I was, working late one night... I head out to go home and it was dark. Since it starts getting dark around 5 PM this time of year... by 7, it's practically the middle of the night!

I reach for my keys, and I quickly realize I have no way to see the lock. I need to lock up the office, but I just can't get the key in the keyhole!

WHY ARE THERE NO LIGHTS AROUND HERE?!

Now, I could carry around an extra flashlight, but that's a big bulk for a 2-second chore.

Who wants to fill a pocket with a big flashlight just to see keyholes?!

What if your key WAS a light!

SLIP THIS KEY COVER ON AND IT IS!

I'd love to give you full instructions on how this thing works... but I already did!

All you have to do is slip this little cover on top of your key and you're ready to shine a light where you need it!

With this thing on, when you have to navigate around at night, you can quickly and easily get into your car or home! No more scratching up all the paint, no more frustrated jabbing of the key!

You know those REALLY tough to open locks? The ones that take power-tool level torque to get opened up? It hurts your fingers just thinking about it!

Well, this comfortable key cover is going to make that less painful!

We ALL have those one or two keys we use 90% of the time! This even makes 'em easy to get out of the crowd! I don't know about you, but I've got WAY too many keys and now I can find the important ones faster!

REMEMBER - IT'S ONLY $1.97!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/9490

But this sale ends Thursday and that means this goes up to $4.97!!

Word 2011 For Mac: Change Auto-Save Intervals

The good thing about Microsoft Word is that even if you forget to save the document you are working on or experience a crash, Word may still save it for you. How? Because by default Word auto-saves your document every 10 minutes. But quite often the interval of 10 minutes is too long and you can still lose your work. Luckily, you can easily decrease the interval and make Word save your work more often. I'm on a Mac, so I'm going to show you how to do it in Word 2011 for Mac. It's similar enough on Windows, though.

First you'll need to click on Word in the menu and go to Preferences:

Word preferences

Now click on the Save icon. This will take you to Word saving preferences:

Online Shopping With Computer And Phone: Which Is Safer?

Throughout the world, more and more people are making online purchases with their mobile phones. In 2012, $25 billion was spent on purchases made from mobile devices, which is an increase of 81 percent from 2011. It's easy to understand the reasons why so many people have begun to shop via their smart devices. After all, a mobile computer offers the selection of internet buying while also allowing the user the freedom to shop while on the go. However, despite the convenience of mobile-commerce, there are still those who are hesitant to take their first steps into smart-device shopping. Especially in the international community, there are those who believe that using a mobile device to make purchases is essentially unsafe.

But is it?

Unfortunately, that's not an easy question to answer, mostly because online security—whether it be through conventional desktop and laptop computers or mobile smart devices—chiefly depends on the user. Let's take a look at some of the similarities and differences between Desktop and mobile security.

Windows Credential Manager

Windows Credential Manager is a handy feature that allows you to store passwords, certificates and other credentials for automatic log on in Windows. I put it to good use the other day when I was having an issue logging into a website. I thought I had the correct password stored, but I was able to go to Windows Credential Manager and see that I had apparently missed a letter when I stored my password. It saved me the trouble of having to go through a password reset with the website. Here's how to find Credential Manager:

For Windows 7, just pull up the Start Menu and type Credential Manager.

For Windows 8 type Credential Manager in the search box with Settings selected.

Either way the result should be Credential Manager. Click on the icon.

When opening Google Chrome a search page named "Sweet page" appears instead of Google. How do I kill it? Ä°t does not appear in malware searches nor in properties-search engine lists. Any advice most gratefully received.

It appears your browser has been hijacked. Often times, these browser hijackers come attached to a legitimate software download. First of all, we'll want to remove the toolbar. These instructions will show you how. Obviously you'll want to search for Sweet Page instead of the Mixi toolbar in the article. But it's the same process.

After that go to your Chrome Browser settings.

Scroll down to On startup and select Set Pages.

Gallery: Edward Burtynsky's Extraordinary Images Of Manufacured Landscapes

I found this while browsing the TED blog, and knew I wanted to share it with you. It is a featured gallery, that brings you the photography of Edward Burtynsky. I find these images beautiful and haunting. I choose haunting because since seeing them I can't get them out of my mind. They're an interesting exploration of man's effect on the earth.

The gallery features thirteen images provided by Burtynsky for TED to share. They explore locations in Canada, the United States of America, Portugal, and Australia.

I'm not sure if I'm more awestruck by the nickel trailing photographs from Canada which seem absolutely otherworldly, or the Rock of Ages quarry from Vermont. Both places have stuck in my head.

You can find more of Burtynsky's work at http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/ if you'd like.

One More Big Deal

Heat + Your Computer = DISASTER!

Your Fans Go Crazy, Parts Start Melting...

And Eventually, Your Laptop Dies!

One Fan Is Here To Save You From Meltdown!

The Incredible Scosche FanBASE Portable Cooling Stand!

Lightweight, Folding Design, Plus...

A BUILT IN 3 PORT USB HUB!

Save Your Laptop + Add More Ports! YEAH BABY!

Can You Guess The #1 Killer of Laptops Everywhere?

The correct answer: Heat!

See, we were told they were portable, remember?

"Bring it with you, set it up anywhere!"

But the reality is that laptops are poorly designed for one of the most important problems with them: cooling!

Almost every laptop has its fans underneath, you know, the place you cover up with your legs, the table, or a desk.

So that heat squeezes out slowly, but the rest of it stays trapped inside!

And your laptop gets hotter and hotter...

...and the parts inside get hotter and hotter...

...and your LEGS get HOTTER and HOTTER...

Until you've ALL had enough. You take it off your legs to spare yourself from burns, and the laptop shuts off because it detected unsafe levels of heat!

You're in pain, the laptop is dead, and nobody is happy.

All it takes is one tiny cooling stand to make sure that never happens to you!

Simply pop this bad boy underneath your laptop and plug it into a USB port!

The heat that WAS trying to kill your laptop now has the extra room you needed to get it out PLUS a wicked fan that pulls the heat away!

"But I don't want to lose a USB port!"

YOU DON'T! Other USB cooling fans cost you a port... but this one actually GIVES YOU PORTS!

Built right into the fan is an amazing 3-port hub! So you net an additional two ports AND get a longer lifetime with your laptop! YES!

This thing is the real deal!

Even better: with a subtle folding design, you can turn this stand into an easy-to-transport device that you can pop right in your laptop bag so you ALWAYS have it!

The only thing that could make this better is a ridiculous deal! AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE'VE GOT!

$12.97 + free US shipping on your order! Talk about a blowout!

King Of The Arctic

This was captured in the last hour of Polar Bear photography we had up near Churchill Canada. We had spotted this guy while he slumbered in a snow drift and we were lucky all the way around. First, we were lucky he decided to stand up at all – they can happily lounge around for hours and hours. A bit like my kids in fact, but I digress…(More)

Doe's First Winter

had been out tromping through the snow all morning at a local park and was heading back to the 'ol truck when I spotted this little gal. She was a bit shy at first, but it didn't take too long for her to start to get a bit curious about me and come over to investigate. After all, it's not every day you see a guy with three extra legs (tripod) and a huge extra eye (camera / lens). I could see... (More)

This was taken one misty morning in Hocking Hills State Park. We were hiking through the Old Man's Cave area and couldn't help but notice the creek that flowed through the gorge looked especially spectacular this particular AM. So, I scampered over some rocks and... (More)
