Barry from Blandon, PA writes: Saw someplace that Microsoft was extending support of XP until April 2015 due to issues of ATM's and sort. Can you verify? While businesses like banks will be able to purchase custom support packages from Microsoft as they transition to another operating system, this will not be available for home users. It's not going to be cheap, either.
You may also have read that Microsoft is extending Windows Security Essentials for XP. But this just means that Security Essentials will be available to install on XP systems. It will work in finding already known threats to XP. But after April 8, 2014 there will be no new security support for XP. So the systems will not be protected from any future threats. There used to be an old cigarette ad slogan that users would rather fight than switch. This seems to be the case with XP. But I promise you, the end is nigh for XP support. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Lore from Charlotte, NC writes: Suddenly I can't copy and paste. I can't copy and paste it in an email, but can copy and paste it into a Microsoft Word blank. Later I can copy from the Word document and paste it into an email. Can't copy from one email to another either. I did all kinds of scans for a virus, defragged, clean disc, you name it but I still can't copy paste the things I always did. Any clue what happened? Love your tips they have been invaluable. Thanks. Copy and Paste is one of those great features invented by Xerox without which, it would be impossible to imagine an operating system today. Sadly, all Operating Systems and software run into bugs at times, and in this case, Lore is not able to use this wonderfully useful feature of copy and paste. Let us take a look at what all can cause this issue and troubleshoot her problem. KeyloggersLore has already tried running antivirus scans. That was a good decision. At times, keyloggers and other software that monitor user input can prevent some applications from registering your keystrokes. In cases like these, you may be surprised to see, that Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V does not work but when you right-click on the text to be copied and select copy to copy it, and paste to paste it to a different location, it works just fine!
Lore, is this the case with you? Then you should run an antivirus scan from a reputable vendor like Kaspersky, Avira or Norton, because you probably have a keylogger on your computer. Plaintext/HTML modeOutlook has two mail formats- Plaintext and HTML. When you copy HTML mail content, Windows also copies the formatting along with the text. If you go ahead and paste this text into an application like MS Word that can read formatting, you will see your text exactly as you copied it. However, at times, the formatting information is messed up, and even though you are able to see your copied text in, say Notepad, it does not appear (properly) in MS Word or Outlook. This is caused from a missing formatting data. Lore, do you use Plaintext mode or HTML mode? In that case, try switching between them and see if Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V works now.
This seems to be a probably solution for your problem, because the entire Office package from version 2007 stores data and formatting in separate files. So, when you copy, the Operating System has to copy from two different files simultaneously. In fact, the files with an 'x' at the end of the extension name (docx, xlsx) are actually archives, and they have the actual data and the xml formatting information stored in different files. This can get messy at times. Last resort- Uninstall and reinstall OfficeFrom what it appears, Copy and Paste works fine for other applications in your case. You mentioned that you can copy and paste to/from MS Word. Therefore, there is no problem with your operating system. As a last resort, you can try to uninstall the entire Office package and reinstall it. That should solve your problem if nothing else works. Updates Improve Xbox One For Gamers & Non-Gamers Microsoft want you to know that the Xbox One isn't just for gamers. The company hopes two sets of updates to the Xbox One console will improve the experience for gamers and non -gamers alike. The first update on February 11 will improve the voice command system on the Xbox One That's a big selling point of the console with demos showing the product easily allowing you to switch between tasks with voice commands. The reality can be a little different. (You tell the console you want to watch Game of Thrones and it finds Home Alone for you.)
Microsoft says this update will improve the quality of Kinect voice, "so commands become more fluid and responsive over time." They didn't specify the exact improvements, saying they would share that information soon. The new update will also allow you to see and manage your storage space on the console and give greater control over the download queue. Games and apps will now appear on separate lists and users can pick the order in which they'd like to load content. This update also brings the return of the battery power indicator for controllers. You can view how much life is left in your controller on the home screen. The Xbox One will also now let you an USB Keyboard with the console... Hilda writes: I have recently bought a Chromebook and I just can't figure out how to do the downloads. I am not that computered with these things. I have no idea how to download games or programs and photos. Hopefully you can figure out what I"m talking about. Sincerely, Hilda.
Hilda, A Chromebook is more of an Internet appliance than a laptop. It is designed to run web-based applications. You don't buy and install programs as you would on a traditional laptop computer. It's a Linux based system, so you can't run Windows applications or programs. Google Chrome will be your web browser. You can find apps for your Chromebook in the... Make It Right A friend of mine brought this organization to my attention in a Facebook chat. After checking out the page, I thought that their mission "to build safe, Cradle to Cradle inspired homes, buildings and communities for people in need" was very noteworthy! I like the emphasis on community that this organization espouses. When you arrive at the site, I'd recommend checking out the How We Build, Where We Work, What We've Learned, and How to Help sections first. My first question, was what exactly did they mean by Cradle to Cradle inspired homes? Never hearing the term before I was most enthused to find it defined in the How We Build section, if you click Cradle to Cradle in the first paragraph it whisks you off to a page that explains it and offers you an embedded TED Talk on the subject. The next place I'd suggest you check out are the navigation options near the bottom of the page: News, See, Learn, and C2C. Learn and C2C - you may have already checked out by this point. But News takes you to the blog and See whisks you away to photos from their various projects and the communities they've helped, as well as design materials and elements, and let's not forget all the volunteers. I hope you'll check out this great non-profit organization today! ~AmandaClick here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
