In The News 02-21-2014 Microsoft: Help Your Friends Switch From XP How desperately does Microsoft want users to give up on XP? The company posted a blog asking people to help their friends and family switch from soon-to-be abandoned operating system. The company urged readers to explain the seriousness of end of support to family members who just don't get it and explained the online resources available for helping loved ones check their computers for compatibility. Support for Windows XP end on April 8, 2014. Is Microsoft Ready To Challenge Kindle? Microsoft may be looking to take on Amazon, at least in the eReader department. The company placed an ad for a software development engineer to work on a team to develop a "groundbreaking interactive reading app for Windows, which incorporates books, magazines and comics." Microsoft has already invested $300 million into Barnes & Noble's Nook venture, so it's possible that a reading app would take advantage of access to that catalog. Experts Warn Of "Most Advanced Malware Threat" Ever We've warned you before about watering hole attacks. And one of the most dangerous malware programs to use that method is called The Mask. This bit of malware tends to target governments, big-businesses and large organizations. It works by luring visitors to tainted websites that look like newspapers or government agencies. Kapersky Security detailed the threat in an extensive report. Thank you so much. Hello Alberta. The article you referenced should also work in Windows 7, the registry key is the same. If you need help navigating and understanding the registry, check out this article from our archives. However, I will try to help out a little bit more here, as well. The problem is caused by an issue in the registry, so it should be fixed the same way in XP and Windows 7. First, you need to go to the start menu, and in the search bar at the bottom, type regedit. This will open up the registry. You will need to navigate to the following folder: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\New\ *Note, when trying to find the folders, you can type the first few letters and it will find the folders Click on (Default) and be certain the value is {D969A300-E7FF-11d0-A93B-00A0C90F2719}
This should solve the problem. If it still does not work, there is another solution, posted by Linda Yan in a Microsoft forum, which links to her Skydrive account for a file. 1. Click Start, type regedit in Search Bar, and then click regedit in the Programs list. 2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder 3. Right click on the Folder key on the left pane, and then select "Export" to backup this registry key. 4. Go to my Skydrive and download folderfix.zip file. 5. Save the folderfix.zip file on to your Desktop. 6. Right click and extract the folderfix.reg file. 7. Right click on the folderfix.reg file and then click Merge. 8. Click Yes to confirm the modification. I have not personally tested this solution, but several people posted saying it worked for them. When I attempt to drag the clips from pictures folder to windows movie maker, I get a message that says I do not have the correct codec installed on my computer. I don't know what to do. Please help! Hi, Jennifer. Thanks for the great question! First off, please allow me to explain what a "codec" is. A codec is what allows your video player to play or "decode" a video. Each type of video has its own codec, and if the codec isn't installed in the video player, it won't play the video. Up until Windows 7, Microsoft, like Apple, was a little notorious about not allowing its programs to work with any non-Microsoft codecs. I remember my struggles with trying to record some .avi clips onto DVD with Windows DVD Maker and having to convert them first. Stitcher I'm totally addicted to this app, so I thought I'd share it with all of you. Stitcher is a really cool app where you can create customized stations that play your favorite podcasts, radio stations, etc. The app then stitches them together into an awesome listening experience. Best of all it's free! Stitcher is available for PC, iPhone, iPad, and Android. I like to use it on my smart phone, so I downloaded the app from the Google Play store. But you can also use it on your PC. To do so, click Get the App at the top of the page. Then click the image of the monitor for the PC version. It will then ask you to sign in. You can F-connect with Facebook, sign up with your e-mail address, or use it as anonymous guest. Already have an account? Then you'd choose Existing User Sign In. You know I F-connected by now. Once you've logged in or decided to browse as a guest, you'll be whisked away to the dashboard. There you'll find buttons that will let you install browser extensions for Chrome or Firefox. If you've logged in you'll be setup on the browse shows tab so that you can start building your custom station. If you've decided to browse as a guest, it may load you in on the Front Page tab instead of browse shows, but you can still get there by clicking Browse Shows on the left side of the page.
