Microsoft: Help Your Friends Switch From XP

How desperately does Microsoft want users to give up on XP? The company posted a blog asking people to help their friends and family switch from soon-to-be abandoned operating system.

The company urged readers to explain the seriousness of end of support to family members who just don't get it and explained the online resources available for helping loved ones check their computers for compatibility.

Support for Windows XP end on April 8, 2014.

Is Microsoft Ready To Challenge Kindle?

Microsoft may be looking to take on Amazon, at least in the eReader department. The company placed an ad for a software development engineer to work on a team to develop a "groundbreaking interactive reading app for Windows, which incorporates books, magazines and comics."

Microsoft has already invested $300 million into Barnes & Noble's Nook venture, so it's possible that a reading app would take advantage of access to that catalog.

Experts Warn Of "Most Advanced Malware Threat" Ever

We've warned you before about watering hole attacks. And one of the most dangerous malware programs to use that method is called The Mask. This bit of malware tends to target governments, big-businesses and large organizations. It works by luring visitors to tainted websites that look like newspapers or government agencies.

Kapersky Security detailed the threat in an extensive report. They say the sophistication of this malware makes it one of the most effective they've ever seen.

I use my older PC, running Windows XP, for music only. Does Linux OS have any program like Windows Media Center or can Windows media Center run on the Linux OS?

Janice from Oklahoma writes:

Does the Linux platform Ubuntu have a media player?

The first thing that comes to mind is the wonderful VLC Player, an outstanding free program that we discussed in this article. There are other media players available as well, depending on which version of Linux you choose to go with. If you choose Ubuntu, you can find options in their app store.

Brenda from Australia writes:

So how do I uninstall Windows XP and install Ubuntu and do you have a step by step procedure for us?

Brenda, you are one of many to ask that question. So let's look at how to accomplish this task. I'll warn you up front, it's not super-simple. But it is a good alternative for XP users who are looking for the least expensive way to replace their operating system. We discussed the advantages of Linux Ubuntu in this article.

What we're giving you is basic installation guide on how to install Ubuntu over Windows XP in a very simple way. At the end of this tutorial you will have a latest version of Ubuntu running successfully on your computer.

There are 2 ways you can install Ubuntu on your computer: Booting through a CD/DVD or through a USB drive.
Ubuntu is a free distribution of Linux. Unlike Windows, you do not need to pay a single penny for Ubuntu. So we just need to simply download Ubuntu ISO from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop and choose your desired Ubuntu version and your required bit.

You can choose between 32 bit and 64 bit (if you are using a partition with less space, then certainly opt for 32bit option). You can choose between Ubuntu 12.04 LTS with long term support release or you can choose Ubuntu 13.10 which is an updated version filled with exiting new Linux materials and applications. Download the ISO free of cost and get ready to burn it.

After downloading the ISO image you can either burn it on a CD/DVD or create a bootable USB stick through the instructions below:

If you are burning the ISO into a CD/DVD

Use your default windows image burner or your favorite burning software (like Nero) into a CD or DVD.

Note: Latest image file of Ubuntu is around 870Mb so it's better to burn the ISO onto a DVD rather than a CD.

If you are burning the ISO into a CD/DVD

Use your default windows image burner or your favorite burning software (like Nero) into a CD or DVD.
Note: Latest image file of Ubuntu is around 870Mb so it's better to burn the ISO onto a DVD rather than a CD.

If you want to create a bootable USB stick

Note: Make sure to keep a backup of the existing USB files before moving forward.

Simply go to http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ and download Universal USB Installer. Follow the picture shown below to download.

  • Open the downloaded file and click on "I Agree" button and proceed.

  • You will be able to see a create button on the next window. Click on it.

  • Now you have to choose Ubuntu from other options as shown in the picture below.

  • Next step is to browse the Ubuntu ISO file from your local drive. Click the "Browse" option and go to the folder where Ubuntu ISO is downloaded and select it.

  • Then choose the Drive in which your USB stick is inserted i.e. D: or E: or F: or etc.

  • Finally, click on create and wait for the installation to be completed.

As soon as it is done you will be ready with a bootable USB stick with Ubuntu installation files.

Tomorrow, in Part 2 of this article, we'll move on to the installation process.

Replace XP With Linux Ubuntu: Part 2

With the end of support for Windows XP just a few weeks away, many of you are looking for alternatives that don't involve spending hundreds of dollars on a new operating system or perhaps thousands on a new computer. For many of you, the free Linux Ubuntu operating system could be just the ticket. In this article, we discussed the advantages of Ubutnu.

In part one of this article we showed you how to download Ubuntu for free and get ready to install it on your computer. Now, we continue that process.

At this point you should have already followed the steps in part one to either burn the ISO onto a DVD or create a bootable USB stick.

Installing Ubuntu

First of all, back up your important files and documents from Windows XP on an external drive, so that you can copy them back after you have installed Ubuntu and run it through Linux applications. Everything is going to gone on your computer when we complete this process.

After you have backed up all required documents, video files, music files and any other important stuff, proceed through the following steps:

  • Insert the CD/DVD or USB stick where the Ubuntu ISO has been burned and restart your system.
  • Newer systems will automatically detect a bootable drive and proceed to boot menu, but older ones might not. So for older PC's, press your default boot key (It is often F8 or F10 or F12) while your PC is starting up.
  • After you have successfully landed on the boot menu, select which boot device you want to use. If you burned the ISO into a CD/DVD then select CD/DVD drive or if you are using USB stick then select "USB Hard Drive" from the boot menu.
  • After selecting the desired boot option you will land upon an Ubuntu welcome screen asking for the desired language and two options: Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. Select your desired language and then select "Install Ubuntu" option by clicking on it.

The next step is preparing Ubuntu installation.

This step will ask you if you have sufficient disk space, if you want to install updates while installing Ubuntu and if you wish to install third party software while installing.

The latest Ubuntu version would require at least 6 GB of space to run smoothly, so make sure you have that space on the installation drive. If you have the Internet connection running then you can go forward with installing the updates and third party software and thus check the required box shown below. Click "Continue" to proceed.
Note: Uncheck the update and third party software part for quick installation, you can always update after installing Ubuntu.

Next, set up wireless connections. You will get two options : do not connect to WiFi and continue or connect to a wireless network . If you have any wireless connection available, then you can choose it from the given connections. If you don't have any wireless connection available, then just skip this part by selecting "I don't want to connect to a WiFi network right now" and clicking on continue.

Choose the type of installation. Now remember, this tutorial is on how to install Ubuntu over XP. We want to replace XP with Ubuntu. So in this step, we would select "Replace Windows XP with Ubuntu" and proceed by clicking on continue.

Note (i): Your personal files and documents are already backed up, so ignore the "warning" part.
Note (ii): The screenshots of installation are from a PC running Windows 7, so naturally, in the following image it is shown as "replacing Windows 7 with Ubuntu" but if you are installing this on your XP computer, then it will display "replacing Windows XP with Ubuntu".

Tomorrow in part 3 of this tutorial, we'll complete the installation.

Replace XP With Linux Ubuntu: Part 3

With the end of support for Windows XP just a few weeks away, many of you are looking for alternatives that don't involve spending hundreds of dollars on a new operating system or perhaps thousands on a new computer. For many of you, the free Linux Ubuntu operating system could be just the ticket. In this article, we discussed the advantages of Ubutnu.

In part one of this article we showed you how to download Ubuntu for free and in part 2, we began the installation process. Now, we will finish up that process.

We have already backed up your XP files, burned an ISO DVD or made a bootable USB drive, download Ubuntu and selected the option to replace Windows XP with Linux Ubuntu.

Now, you will start the installation. Select the drive where you want to install Ubuntu. Click on "Install Now" button to start.

Note: Generally Windows XP files are installed on local drive C. So to remove the existing one and install fresh Ubuntu, select the drive where you have your existing XP files.

Choosing your location is next. If you are connected with Internet, then it will be selected automatically. If not, then you have to manually select your current location.

Press "Continue" after successfully selecting your location.

Next comes selecting your preferred keyboard layout. You can manually select from various layouts provided by default, or also you can use "detect keyboard layout" for Ubuntu to help you select your desired keyboard layout. Click on "Continue" after completing this step.

Next comes you user account info. It will ask for your name (remember not your username, just your original name), your computer's name, your Username (this is where you have to insert your PC's username to login), your password (twice). It will also ask for automatic installation or if you would need password to login. Choose your desired options and click on "Continue".

Now finally we have landed on our final step. This step is for your Ubuntu account or Ubuntu One. If you are creating a new account then select "I am new Ubuntu user" and enter your email address and password. If you are an existing Ubuntu user, then follow the same step and just select "I am returning Ubuntu One user and my password is:" and provide your existing Ubuntu One password, then press continue.

After the last step, Ubuntu will start to install.

You will be given several tips and tricks for Ubuntu while it installs. As soon as the installation is done, you will receive a dialogue box asking for "Continue testing" or "Restart now". Click on "Restart now" to complete the installation.

There you go. You have successfully installed Ubuntu on your system, absolutely free of cost. Your PC will not boot dually i.e. run XP and Ubuntu together (which affects the performance crucially), rather it will now only run the latest version of Ubuntu as its default OS. Do enjoy it and don't forget to comment if you have any questions or click here.

If you have been using a computer for any length of time, you will probably have become accustomed to accessing your files with a traditional folder management system in Windows or OS X. You create, or download files, and then store them on your desktop or in a folder somewhere so that you can get to them when you need them. However things are not quite as simple on an Android tablet. At least, not at first.

Apple takes a different approach from what you're used to on a computer. The iPad has no visible file structure, and any files that you have are really only accessible through a compatible app. So, if you create a file on your iPad, it will really only be immediately accessible from the app that you created it with or an app that you send the file to.

Question: Hi! I would like your help on how I can set a timer like they do at the Public Library with their computers so that when my kids turn on the PC it will shut off or prevent them from using it after a certain time. Can you help me?

If you're using Windows, you can control a variety of settings for the kids. First go either to the Start Menu in Windows 7 or the search function on the Windows 8 Charms Bar and start typing "Parental." Windows 7 should show you Parental Controls while Windows 8 will bring up Family Safety.

You'll be give the option to start a Windows Live Family Safety Account. This is a free service. You will have to log in with a Windows Live ID or create a Windows Live account. I'm not going to walk you step-by-step through the entire process as the set-up process for your family account does that pretty effectively. Once you're set up, you can choose which users to set parental controls for on that device.

Among your options:

Web Filtering – which will control what sites your children can visit.

Time Limits – which control when and how long children can use the computer.

Windows Store and Game Restrictions – which can prevent your kids from playing games by either title or rating.

App Restrictions – which control what apps are allowed on that device.

Help, when my husband was signing into our email account, he accidentally put the password along with the email address. So when I go and sign in a box comes up with the email address and password, how do I delete this, or do we need to make up another new password?

To delete it once, you simply need to highlight the text, hit delete and then enter the correct information. But to keep the wrong password from popping up every time, you need to stop your browser from remembering the incorrect information. If the log-in field offers you the option of remembering your password, make sure to un-check it, because that might just solve your problem. You don't say which browser you're using, I'm giving the instructions for Internet Explorer and the process would be similar for Firefox.

You start out with the familiar settings menu and choose Internet Options

Choose the Content tab and then in AutoComplete select Settings.

Greatist

I think if you were to guess what some of the most popular New Year's Resolutions are that you would find among them the goal to lose weight, get fit, and become healthier. I know I've made that resolution before, and all my friends have too.

However, we're well on our way to March and how many of us have fallen off the "get healthier" wagon? I know I have! My goal wasn't even terribly complex – I just want to drink more water. And I do great when I'm not at home. It's easy to drink water on my commute and at school. But at home I tend to fail. So I was looking for some inspiration.

I found Greatist. And I'm taking you directly to their About page because I think it is important that you get their mission message frontloaded. This site takes all the prescriptive, fat-shaming/skinny-shaming, fad preaching and tosses it out the window with the message that they celebrate what means healthy to you.

Your next stop should totally be this page where you'll discover even more about the site, and how they source their content. It also answers the question What is a Greatist?

After that I fully encourage you to run free all over the site to find the inspirational – get healthy content that makes you happy. I like the emotional health content a lot! One of the featured articles is about celebrating friendship on Valentine's instead of love. What a great way to deepen the bonds of friendship between you and your circle of friends!

I also think it is really cool that they highlight a Recipe of the Day and a Workout of the Day. It totally exposes you to new things you might want to try.

Go discover this site that puts the inspiration back in getting healthy.

Chordify

Chordify is an awesome site! It transforms music from YouTube, SoundCloud or your private collection and converts it into chords. that you can play along with on a guitar, ukulele, or piano. It's a freemium service – meaning that there is a free level and a premium (paid for) level.

The free version includes 3 songs in music storage, maximum song duration of 10 minutes, maximum file size of 10 MB, and .PDFs of the chord diagrams. To compare that to the Premium, check out this link.

When you arrive you'll notice there is a navigation strip along the top of the page with the options: Home, Library, More, Create Account, Login, and then social media buttons. In the center of the page you'll find the field were you can either upload a song from your collection (you'll need to create an account to do so) or the field below it where you can paste in a URL to the song you want to convert.

To create a free account, click Create Account at the top of the page and then fill out the form with your name, a working e-mail address, and create a password. Then click the Create Account button on the form. You'll be automatically signed in.

I put in the YouTube link for my favorite song at the moment, Noosa's "Walk on By", and it generated this page. When I press play it starts the song, and the chord field also starts playing. The free version allows you to play, pause, download, and get diagrams on how to play the chords.

I think this is a pretty cool way to experience your favorite songs if you play the guitar, ukulele, or piano. Check it out today!
