Quick Tip

Victor writes:

I have two computers one windows 7 that I use to get on the internet, emails etc.. The second computer is a Windows XP that I plan to use only off-line for preparing, storing, and printing lessons, (Microsoft 2003), backup for docs., doing Artwork etc. QUESTION: Do I need a router for either of these two machines?

A router is a device that will plug into your modem and allow you have WiFi in your home. If you want a wireless signal available for your Windows 7 PC or any other devices like a tablet, you will need a router. Or you could choose to have a wired connection and connect your Windows 7 PC to the modem.

Since your XP device is not going online, it would not require a router. Unless you decided to link it to a shared server in your home.

Computers 101

Nellie from Waite Park, Minnesota writes:

Is it possible to download your emagazines in a flash drive? How do I do It? Would I just insert the flash drive to search for a tip? Or is this a bad idea? Would it be better to download them on an external hard drive? Should I keep the external hard drive plugged in all the time or would I be taking a chance of it becoming infected? I appreciate your advice.

Nellie, if you've downloaded any of our eBooks or eMagazines you can easily move the PDF to a flash drive if you choose.

You may not have the option to download the file directly to the flash drive, but you can just drag and drop or copy and paste like any other file. The same would be true for an external hard drive. As long as you have a PDF reader installed, you could just select the e-publication from the storage device and it should open on your computer.

An external hard drive is also a good storage option. There's no need to keep in plugged in all the time. You can just connect it to the computer when you wish to access the eMagazines. If you anticipate accessing them often, you may want to leave them on your hard drive and put other less frequently used material on your external drive.

You would open the e-Magazine from the drive much the same way you open it when it is stored on your computer.

As long as you have proper security software installed and updated on your computer, there's no reason to believe you would have any issues with malware on your drives.

On The Move

Malissa from Kentucky writes:

I've been using a computer for a long time, but I just got my Galaxy phone and my Kindle tablet last Christmas. Everyone says that you get programs for them in the app store. I was not sure what that was, but I always just let my daughter get things that I needed for me. Now, we've switched to a new Windows 8 computer and everything is in an app store now, too. But I feel like a dummy asking – just what is an app store and how do I use it?

An app store is just an online store where you can purchase applications for a particular operating system. Fortunately, they are easy to get to, just by selecting an icon on that device. For example, an Android Phone or tablet would use the Google Play Store.

You access it by tapping the icon that resembles a shopping bag on your Android device.

From The Archives

Sylvia from NY, NY writes "I used a 512 MB flash drive awhile ago to back up my computer. Since then, there is more to back up so how do I know how full that flashdrive is and how does it know to start backing up from where it left off before? I'm an 83 yr old lady and not too technical. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks."

Hi, Sylvia.

First off, congratulations on even knowing terms like "flash drive" and "backup". So many people that I know who are my age or older (I'm pushing 50 up the hill) use their age as an excuse not to be technologically literate. I have to tell you that you are MUCH more technical than a lot of other people your age. The great Douglas Adams, technophile, humorist and environmentalist once said "Anything invented before you're born is a part of nature. Anything invented between the time that you're born and the time that you're thirty is an amazing technological advancement and you'll probably have a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty is obviously the work of the devil." Bravo to you for not using your age as an excuse to fall into that trap.

On to your question.

For the first part, how do you know if your flash drive is full, is fairly easy. The hard way…

Paint 101 - Hidden Tricks - Trails

I've been showing you the basics of Microsoft Paint – the free image editor that's included with Windows – in a series of articles. To learn more about the basics of Paint, click here. We've also moved on to some hidden tricks that aren't on the Tool menu. We've learned all about the stamp/clone tool and now we'll move on to making trails.

We'll start out assuming you know how to open or create an image in Paint and have a basic understanding of the function of each of the tools pictured on the menu. I'm going to show you a trick not pictured on the menu.

We will start out with this basic image.

I'll use the Select tool to choose the square.

Simply left-click and drag over the image you wish to choose.

National Awareness Days

Have you ever wanted to know when the national awareness days, weeks or months are? I got really curious about it after watching the Google logo change for National Awareness Days, and wondered if there was a listing of them where I could see what was upcoming for the month.

This site has very easy navigation. You can select the month you want to view from the side menu on the left. So for example, you can click February and be whisked away to all the National Awareness Days for that month.

They will appear as a listing, and are not in chronological order, but rather alphabetical order. Click on the link of an awareness day, and you'll discover the day it is celebrated or observed, and a history of the day with suggestions of how you can be involved.

I've bookmarked this site for handy reference, I bet you will too! However, if you don't want to bookmark the page but still want to be kept up to date on awareness days, you can register your e-mail address to receive an Awareness Days Alert. Just type in your e-mail address and your First Name (optional) and click the subscribe button!

King Of The Arctic

This was captured in the last hour of Polar Bear photography we had up near Churchill Canada. We had spotted this guy while he slumbered in a snow drift and we were lucky all the way around. First, we were lucky he decided to stand up at all – they can happily lounge around for hours and hours. A bit like my kids in fact, but I digress…(More)

Doe's First Winter

had been out tromping through the snow all morning at a local park and was heading back to the 'ol truck when I spotted this little gal. She was a bit shy at first, but it didn't take too long for her to start to get a bit curious about me and come over to investigate. After all, it's not every day you see a guy with three extra legs (tripod) and a huge extra eye (camera / lens). I could see... (More)
