Tim from Louisville, Ohio writes: If I have Ubuntu and my correspondents do not: if I sent them an attachment using a word processing or spreadsheet program, will they be able to open it? As long as you save it in a file format their computer can understand, there should be no problem. If you use a program like Office Libre to create documents or spreadsheets you will be able to save it in a file format that Windows or Mac systems can read. Check out this informative article on Office Libre to learn more.
The same would also hold true for image files. An image saved as a jpeg, tiff or gif on a program like Pinta, could be opened in any other program that can read those files. Pinta is a free program that is very similar to Paint.net. Office Libre and Pinta are good examples of the variety of free program available for the Linux OS. They will do many of the same things that programs costing hundreds of dollars do. And with a free operating system and free programs, the cost to you is basically the time you've spent installing Linux and setting up your system. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Paint 101: Hidden Tricks Stamp/Clone Tool Paint Microsoft's free image program that comes with Windows- has a few tricks that Microsoft doesn't want you to know about. Well, at least it seems that way because these functions aren't on any of the tool menus. But I'm going to show you where they are. Now, we've already covered a lot of tips and tricks for using Paint in previous articles. If you haven't read them yet, click here to learn about all that Paint can do for you. We'll start out assuming you already know how open or create an image in paint. If not, check out the previous tutorials mentioned above. Now let's learn a few tricks. 1. Stamp Tool This trick allows you to take pixels from one part of the image and copy them somewhere else. Let's begin with an image I took of a country church on a visit to my hometown in Southern Ohio. I've opened this image in Paint.
What I'd like to do is remove the power lines in front of the church. First, we'll zoom in on the image by selecting the magnifying glass icon from the menu at the top.
Then select the area where we wish to zoom in.
Left-click on the mouse button once to begin to zoom in.
And just keep clicking to get as close as you want. To Zoom out, right-click.
Choose the select tool from the top menu.
You can choose either rectangular or free-form for the shape.
Here, we've chosen a rectangular shape from the siding of the church to cover up the power lines.
Now, hold down the Ctrl key, left-click the mouse and move the portion of the image you've selected to where you'd like to paste it and release the mouse button.
You can paste a selection multiple times as long as you keep control depressed. You can select other portions of the image to copy as well.
The power lines are gone from part of the image here. I'll admit this is not the best stamping job. If you really took your time and were selective about which portions of the siding to clone, it would look a lot sharper.
It's also a useful tool for taking people you'd rather forget about out of photos.
You can also use it to add images.
I copied a bat with the free hand selection tool and stamped it in other places in the image.
Enjoy experimenting with Paint! ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!

Anne from USA writes "Hi Steve. I have rather a bizzarre problem, that happens when I try to play Canasta (and other games), in Pogo.com. I have recently reinstalled Windows XP, so my Java is up to date. I'm using Virgin Media Security, no bugs etc reported. This is the only problem I'm experiencing so far! Any ideas what I can do to resolve this? I know it's a long shot, but I live in hope. ;o) Thanks. Anne
Hi, Anne. Thanks for the great question. I apologize that we didn't get to your question in time to help, but, as I'm sure that you've figured out, this problem has been resolved. But I am going to go ahead and address it anyway so that people who don't know what was going on will and you'll be armed in case it ever happens again. First of all, what is Java? And yes, it is the cup of coffee sitting to the right of your mousepad, but it's also the number one programming language in the world right now. In addition to powering Pogo games, Java (or Javascript as it's also known) runs many of the applets that bring life to the websites that you look at. According to the Java website, there are over nine million developers working with Java. But it's not just computers Java runs on tablets, mobile phones, Blu-Ray players, gaming consoles and smart TV's. And therein, really, lies the problem... The Most A-PEEL-ing Kitchen Tool Ever! Say Goodbye To Sore Hands Hello To Perfectly Peeled Vegetables and Fruit Every Time
Durable Stainless Steel Blades! Rubberized Comfort Grip! Faster... Safer... More Comfortable! 2 Fantastic Hand Peelers...1 Low Price This hand peeler has got to be the most a-PEEL-ing kitchen helper I've ever seen! You have to HAND it to whoever came up with this one. Okay, enough with the CORN-y jokes... Sorry, sometimes I can't help myself. But I want to tell you about this totally cool little kitchen device that has changed my attitude in the kitchen. Now, doctors say we're all supposed to eat five servings of fruits and veggies a day, which fortunately isn't a problem for me because I love fruits and vegetables, as long as they're fresh. What I hate is prepping them. I hate peeling! Ever since I was little kid and my mom handed me a vegetable peeler to take care of some potatoes. I nicked my knuckles with the blade and holding the handle in my hand for so long made my fingers stiff and sore. Not to mention that I was initially holding it by the blade when I tried to peel...but that's a whole different story. (One my mother loves to tell people) When it comes to veggies and fruits, if I can avoid peeling it, I do. But that doesn't always work. You don't want a carrot with the peel on it or an apple pie with apple skins inside. (YUCK!) And if you want really smooth mashed potatoes, those peels have to come off. Meet my new best friend! This amazing hand peeler slides right on your finger and rests against the palm of your hand. You have TOTAL CONTROL while you're peeling. And that means that peeling goes FASTER. I mean way faster... You'll be matching the speeds of those TV chefs. Grab a potato and start making a back and forth scrubbing motion. ZIP... BOOM...BAM! You are DONE! Check out the durable stainless steel blades. They only take off that thin layer of peel and leave your expensive fruits and vegetables intact. And if you want paper thin slices for salads, quick-cooking soups or kettle style potato and vegetable chips... this is the tool for you! Oh and let's not forget the COMFORT FACTOR! If you're starting to get a little arthritis in your hands, (and eventually we all will) you will really appreciate how much easier this is to use that an old-fashioned peeler. The SUPER-SOFT rubberized top makes it so easy to grip and the finger grips are completely adjustable to fit almost any hand. Faster... way more comfortable... Plus completely compact for easy storage in a drawer! Peel mountains of potatoes in a flash, zest oranges, lemons and limes, zip through a bushel of apples at record speed! And you won't be too tired to eat all that good food! Plus your hand will still be able to hold a fork. So how much would you be willing to pay for the PERFECT Addition to your kitchen? What if I told you that you get TWO of these outstanding hand peelers? How about I throw in FREE U.S. SHIPPING on any order over $5? How does $4.97 sound? You're probably already clicking on the store link below to buy a set. While you're at it, grab more than one. Believe me, you will thank me when Thanksgiving rolls around again. http://store.worldstart.com/product/7503 These will be gone faster than you can peel a potato with one of them. Grab them before Wednesday , because if any are left, the price jumps back to $10.97 !
