NetFlix Plans To Split Service Into Pricing Tiers

In a 4th quarter letter to shareholders Netflix revealed plans to split their service into three pricing tiers. The popular video streaming service says they have been testing 1-stream and 3-stream variations as well as standard definition and HD price points. This seems like a polite way of informing consumers that their bills are likely to go up.

The company assured current subscribers that they would offer a "generous grandfathering of existing plans" and that they likely wouldn't raise those consumers rates unless they made some type of change in their plans.

The company also said it will continue to expand its original program offerings. The company currently has nearly 32 million paid subscribers, adding nearly 2 million in the last three months of 2013.

Computers 101

Forget Windows 7 & 8, Replace XP With Linux Ubuntu

You may not be familiar with Linux. It's an operating system for computers, like Windows. And while the argument could go on forever over which system is superior (both systems have their pros and cons), I think Linux could be a particularly good choice for users forced to switch from Windows XP because Microsoft is ending security support on April 8, 2014. It can be a particularly good choice for those with older computers.

In fact, it's a superior system to XP. XP is user-friendly, but a lot has changed in the 12 years since XP was launched. And now that Microsoft is ending support, XP is highly vulnerable to external threats such as viruses and malware.

If you're looking for a change from Windows, consider trying a brand new experience with the Linux platform. Now compared to Windows, Linux doesn't have a large percentage of users, but in my experience it's a much better system. It will give you much more than you get from Windows XP or even from Windows 7 or 8.

Let's talk about why you should consider switching from Windows XP to Linux Ubuntu.

Security: Ubuntu claims to be a virus free OS, and has indeed has been so far. You won't hear users complaining about malware or viruses slowing out their PC's while using Ubuntu. On the other hand, as we discussed earlier, Windows XP is no longer supported by Microsoft. In others words if you are using Windows XP, then you are more likely to be to be affected by malicious software.

Speed: If you have an older computer Running Wndows XP, then you have probably experienceed lagging PC speed. The reason behind that is because XP utilizes a huge portion of your system resources and begins to slows down your PC after awhile. But a fresh install of Ubuntu runs for a long time without any lag. You can experience a smooth running system even years after install since it uses a lesser amount of resources and boosts performance in older machines.

Cost: A very important point is that Linux is free, while Windows OS cost hundreds of dollars. You do not need a product key to activate Linux after installing. It's a great option if you're not looking to spend any more money.

Space: Ubuntu occupies much less hard drive space than XP. Other versions of Ubuntu such as Xbuntu, take up even less space and provide almost the same functionality.

Drivers: There's is no headache of installing drivers for audio, video and graphics from external sources in Ubuntu. The OS automatically detects your hardware and installs the latest drivers. Even if you have lost your drivers, you can still acquire sound and video drivers automatically while using Ubuntu.

Software: Ubuntu comes along with a cluster of useful software absolutely free with no catches or hidden charges. Software like Firefox, Chrome, Libre Office, Open Office and many more can be found at Ubuntu Software center. Another special software, Wine, helps you run most of your Windows based software without any trouble at all.

Customization: Ubuntu users have full customization options. You have the choice to change your desktop colors, task bar sizes and make custom side bars.

Please note, I'm not against Microsoft or Windows. But the Linux OS offers some great options and a free alternative for upgrading. Do not that you may not be able to run every Windows program with Linux, but if you've got basic needs like e-mail, browsing the Internet and simple word processing and spreadsheet work, this is a great free alternative.

Package Tracker Lets You Track Multiple Deliveries

I came across an interesting app for Windows 8.1. Normally, I highlight free apps, but I'll let you know up front this one costs a whopping $2.50, though there is a free trial available. It's called Package Tracker. Now if you're someone who receives or sends a lot of packages with multiple carriers, this could be a great resource for you.

This tool checks in on the delivery status of your packages. No more having to visit the Fed Ex site, then UPS and then the Post Office. Or trying to remember what service your package is arriving by. In fact, this app supports more than 60 carriers.

It also pushes live updates right to your live tiles. So if you happen to be using the Metro/Modern screen, any updates in delivery status will pop right up there if you'd like.

From The Archives

David from Minnesota writes:

Is there a way to translate a OpenOffice Writer document to Spanish? Thanks.

Answer:

There are over 6800 distinct languages and more then two dozen used by tens of millions of people. There is no built-in way for OpenOffice to translate documents to other languages. There is an alternative solution on the web, which is pretty simple to use and it even has a plug-in for Microsoft Office users to translate documents.

Bing Translator allows you to type in or copy the text from a document. Simply...

Photography Jargon Buster

If you've recently bought a new digital camera or if you're planning on buying one in the near future, these technical terms will help keep you better equipped. The best buyer is one who is better informed and nothing is a better beginning than knowing what some of the terms mean when it comes to understanding the basic settings on your camera. Let's begin!

Pixel

The word "pixel" stands for picture element. What you see on the LCD viewfinder of your camera or on your PC monitor is a bunch of pixels. A general rule of thumb is that the greater the pixel count, the better and sharper the image. A greater pixel count means the image can be viewed at its native resolution. That is, the resolution it was captured at, with less loss in visual detail.

Megapixel

The megapixel (MP) rating of a camera represents the resolution (in millions of pixels) that the camera is capable of producing. A six megapixel camera's CCD sensor would be capable of capturing an image containing up to approximately six million pixels.

Amanda's Coolsite

Mystery IQ Test

Whenever I get addicted to something I love to pass it on to all of you! Well that's exactly what today's site is! I am super addicted to this Mystery IQ Test game.

It's so addicting that my roommate often ends up behind my chair watching my progress through the levels. The premise is that your character wakes up in a strange room, reads a note, and discovers that there are 30 puzzle rooms he has to make it through in order to get back home. You don't know where you are, who put you there, or why they are testing your IQ.

Navigating the game uses the arrow keys, space bar, mouse, and keyboard.

Once you get to the site press play, and then read the note in the room, after that you'll have to pick the level of difficulty you want to play the game on. The difficulty levels are Safe, Casual, and Challenging. I'm working through the Challenging level. The levels are the same, the difficulty is just increased for taking hints or getting a solution.

If you absolutely get stuck, and don't want to lose points for a taking a hint or solution, you can always check out the walk-through video below the game. It's almost eight minutes long, but walks you through the entire run of Casual difficulty. I noticed when watching it through after beating it, that some boards (mainly the ones with tiles you walk on) have multiple solutions.

Well are you ready to test your IQ in the Mystery IQ Test? Who has abducted you and why are they testing your puzzle solving skills? Find out by beating the game!
