Tech Giants Form Mega-Lobby

A group of businesses and organizations has banded together to form the WifiForward Coalition, a group that says it wants to find a solution to the WiFi spectrum crunch by finding more unlicensed spectrum to use. What it sounds like is they are creating an incredibly powerful group of lobbyists.

The group lists its goals as protecting and strengthening existing unlicensed spectrum and freeing up new spectrum for a variety of frequencies. Among those on board are Microsoft, Google, Best Buy, the AMerican Lbrary Association, Comcast, Motorola and the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband Coalition.

The group plans strong lobbying efforts in Washington. About 57% of all mobile data traffic in North America is currently carried by Wi-Fi, and by 2018 that figure is expected to increase to 64% according to figures from Cisco.

For Google and Microsoft, improving Internet access through Wi-Fi allows more users to access their online services, such as Google search and Bing, thus driving more ad revenue.

FireFox To Put Ads On Directory Tiles

Mozilla Firefox has announced that it will start placing advertising content on the browser's new tabs page. Now, when you open a new tab in Firefox, you see a page like this:

Soon you'll see sponsored content from advertisers among the choices. Mozilla isn't calling it advertising, instead the company calls it "an exploration to transform the user's content experience." which will offer "sponsored content from hand-picked partners to help support Mozilla's pursuit of our mission. " Which basically means, they're putting in ads.

There's no exact date on when the ads will start to pop up.

Molly in Tacoma Park, Maryland writes:

I have a Samsung Digimax L85 camera that I've used for several years with a memory card. Unfortunately, I lost my memory card a few months back. I've purchased two different SDHC San Disk memory cards and neither one of them will work with my camera. I've tried formatting the cards as instructed and nothing happens. The camera was working find before I lost the card. What should I do next?

Molly, I did a little checking around online and discovered that our camera uses SD memory cards and is not compatible with SDHC memory cards. SDHC cards have a greater storage capacity, but are sometimes not compatible with other devices.

You'll have to look around to find an SD card 2 GB or less that is compatible with your camera.

Paint 101: Hidden Tricks Stamp/Clone Tool

Paint – Microsoft's free image program that comes with Windows- has a few tricks that Microsoft doesn't want you to know about. Well, at least it seems that way because these functions aren't on any of the tool menus. But I'm going to show you where they are.

Now, we've already covered a lot of tips and tricks for using Paint in previous articles. If you haven't read them yet, click here to learn about all that Paint can do for you.

We'll start out assuming you already know how open or create an image in paint. If not, check out the previous tutorials mentioned above. Now let's learn a few tricks.

1. Stamp Tool

This trick allows you to take pixels from one part of the image and copy them somewhere else. Let's begin with an image I took of a country church on a visit to my hometown in Southern Ohio. I've opened this image in Paint.

What I'd like to do is remove the power lines in front of the church. First, we'll zoom in on the image by selecting the magnifying glass icon from the menu at the top.

Then select the area where we wish to zoom in.

Left-click on the mouse button once to begin to zoom in.

And just keep clicking to get as close as you want. To Zoom out, right-click.

Choose the select tool from the top menu.

You can choose either rectangular or free-form for the shape.

Here, we've chosen a rectangular shape from the siding of the church to cover up the power lines.

Now, hold down the Ctrl key, left-click the mouse and move the portion of the image you've selected to where you'd like to paste it and release the mouse button.

You can paste a selection multiple times as long as you keep control depressed. You can select other portions of the image to copy as well.

The power lines are gone from part of the image here. I'll admit this is not the best stamping job. If you really took your time and were selective about which portions of the siding to clone, it would look a lot sharper.

It's also a useful tool for taking people you'd rather forget about out of photos.

You can also use it to add images.

I copied a bat with the free hand selection tool and stamped it in other places in the image.

Enjoy experimenting with Paint!

Paint 101 - Hidden Tricks - Trails

I've been showing you the basics of Microsoft Paint – the free image editor that's included with Windows – in a series of articles. To learn more about the basics of Paint, click here. We've also moved on to some hidden tricks that aren't on the Tool menu. We've learned all about the stamp/clone tool and now we'll move on to making trails.

We'll start out assuming you know how to open or create an image in Paint and have a basic understanding of the function of each of the tools pictured on the menu. I'm going to show you a trick not pictured on the menu.

We will start out with this basic image.

I'll use the Select tool to choose the square.

Simply left-click and drag over the image you wish to choose.

Now hold down the Shift key while you drag that selection and you get a trail.

Or we could use this photo of bats and the moon

Let's choose the freehand selection tool.

We'll zoom in on a bat with the magnifying tool.

Then we'll outline a bat. You'll do a much nicer job than I managed.

Then hold down the shift key and drag that bat wherever we'd like it to fly.

Have fun playing with Paint!

On The Move

Teresa asks:

I have my WiFi set up. I am trying to connect my tablet, and it has shown me the name of my router, but I keep getting a notification of an "authentication problem" when I try to connect. What am I doing wrong?

Hi Teresa, thanks for the question.

Whenever you get an authentication problem or error, it often (but not always!) means you have made an error in entering the security password.

Usually, when connecting with a device, you have the option to show the password when typing it in, as shown in the picture below. Just make sure there is a check mark in the box. (This isn't recommended to do for all passwords, but as you are typing it in, it is very helpful.)

Remember also that passwords are case sensitive. Another thing to try is to tap...

Online Shopping With Computer And Phone: Which Is Safer?

Throughout the world, more and more people are making online purchases with their mobile phones. In 2012, $25 billion was spent on purchases made from mobile devices, which is an increase of 81 percent from 2011. It's easy to understand the reasons why so many people have begun to shop via their smart devices. After all, a mobile computer offers the selection of internet buying while also allowing the user the freedom to shop while on the go. However, despite the convenience of mobile-commerce, there are still those who are hesitant to take their first steps into smart-device shopping. Especially in the international community, there are those who believe that using a mobile device to make purchases is essentially unsafe.

But is it?

Unfortunately, that's not an easy question to answer, mostly because online security—whether it be through conventional desktop and laptop computers or mobile smart devices—chiefly depends on the user. Let's take a look at some of the similarities and differences between Desktop and mobile security.

Where Do I Get News For My Android Tablet

I just got a new Android tablet as a Mother's Day gift. My kids said it would be a great way to keep up with the news (They call me a news junkie) without having to turn my computer or TV on all the time, Where are the best places to find news that I don't have to pay for?

There is a wide selection selection of news and information apps available for Android.

Programs for tablets are called "apps" (short for applications), and the largest resource for Android apps is the Google Play Store. There are apps for every purpose you can imagine, and many of them are free. I'm going to highlight some free news apps you might want to try out.

I'd start out by checking for your local newspaper. Many newspapers offer apps and a lot of them are free. Your paper may feature a link to their app on their website or search for it by name in the search box.

Below is the app for my local paper. If there was a cost associated with the app, it would appear in the gray box. Since this is free, I can simply click INSTALL if I'd like the app and it will download and install on my tablet.

Many papers with national distribution like USA Today and The New York Times also offer apps.

Sylvia from NY, NY writes "I used a 512 MB flash drive awhile ago to back up my computer. Since then, there is more to back up so how do I know how full that flashdrive is and how does it know to start backing up from where it left off before? I'm an 83 yr old lady and not too technical. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks."

Hi, Sylvia.

First off, congratulations on even knowing terms like "flash drive" and "backup". So many people that I know who are my age or older (I'm pushing 50 up the hill) use their age as an excuse not to be technologically literate. I have to tell you that you are MUCH more technical than a lot of other people your age. The great Douglas Adams, technophile, humorist and environmentalist once said "Anything invented before you're born is a part of nature. Anything invented between the time that you're born and the time that you're thirty is an amazing technological advancement and you'll probably have a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty is obviously the work of the devil." Bravo to you for not using your age as an excuse to fall into that trap.

On to your question.

For the first part, how do you know if your flash drive is full, is fairly easy. The hard way… the way that you DON'T want to find out if your hard drive is full, is that you get an error that looks something like this:

The easy way is to look at your drive. In order to do this...

Artsy

I love art! And I love finding new ways to discover art – in that sense Artsy is amazing. I've discovered so much since I found this site.

When you arrive it will ask you to sign in, your options are to sign up with Facebook, Twitter, or your E-mail. If you want to explore the site before you sign up just click the X button in the top right corner of the sign up pop up. I chose to F-connect with Facebook.

When you sign up it then asks you if you buy art. Your choices are Yes, I buy art.; I'm interested in starting.; and Just Looking and Learning. I chose the last one. Then it will ask where you live, your favorite gallery name (or you can select galleries to follow), your favorite museum (or you can select museums to follow), and your favorite artists. You can use the skip button to click through any of these options, and then the done button when you've finished step four.

Now all that's left is to to browse all this amazing art! I started by browsing the featured art. Then I clicked Browse at the top of the page, and started browsing via the categories I was interested in. You have a lot of categories to choose from!

Contemporary – Chinese Art, Color Fields, Conceptualism, Emerging Art, Figurative Painting, Graphic Realism, Portrait Photography, Contemporary Pop, and Ceramics.

Modern/Historical – Art Nouveau, Bauhaus, Post-War American Art, Post-War European Art, Renaissance, Greek and Roman Art and Architecture, Arts of Africa-Oceana-and the Americas, Minimalism, and Impressionism.

Design – Contemporary Design, 20th Century Design, Glass, Jewelry, Lighting, Objects of Vertu, Seating, Storage, and Tableware.

I headed off to Impressionism and then wandered around the site from there. When you find art you like you can click the Heart button to save it to your online collection where you can view it later.

This is an awesome way to explore and enjoy art. Check it out today!

Yummly

I was really hungry when I started researching sites to share with you, and I had limited options in my pantry, so I figured I'd look up food sites that allow you to exclude items. I found Yummly! Started in 2010 because the site's founder Dave Feller couldn't find a way to search for recipes and exclude mustard.

When you arrive there will be a pop up that asks whether you'd like to sign up with Facebook or Google, you can click the X in the top right corner of the pop up to make it go away. Then you can check the site out and see if you really want to sign up. If you do decide to later, just click the Create an Account button at the top right of the page. I choose to F-connect with Facebook like always. I immediately received a welcome e-mail that explained the yum button, how to set my taste preferences, and that I can easily share the things I find via Yummly over Facebook, Pinterest, or e-mail.

There are two things I really love besides the ability exclude ingredients from search.

The first is the yum button. When you're browsing the mouth-watering pictures of these recipes you can just click the yum button to save the recipe for later perusal. In order to see what you've yum'd, click the yum button at the top of the page on the navigation strip. After you've yum'd five recipes, you'll start getting recommendations for other things you'd like.

The second thing I love is that I can customize what I see by my Taste preferences. To set your taste preferences you need to be logged in, and then you'll click on the drop down arrow next to your user name at the top of the page. Choose Taste Preferences, and you'll be whisked away to the page where you can set them up. You can add ingredients you dislike. For example, I added mushrooms, capers, and a long list of seafood. What's really nice is that it will bring up all the options of that ingredient so you can weed it all out!

You can also select a diet you follow (Lacto vegetarian, Ovo vegetarian, Pescetarian, Vegan, and Vegetarian).

You can also exclude foods you're allergic to (dairy-free, egg-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, seafood-free, sesame-free, soy-free, sulfite-free, tree nut-free, and wheat-free). This will allow you to start seeing only recipes that will appeal to you.

Well, are you reading go collect scrumptious recipes? I know I am!
