Quick Tip

Why Stop XP Support?

I have about 17 questions in the WorldStart inbox that are all variations of "Why is Microsoft stopping support for XP?" Many go on to answer the question with "Because they are evil, greedy #%$! who are out to get me."

But I suggest looking at it another way. How long would you continue to spend millions of dollars and thousands of man hours a year supporting a 13-year-old product? If you sold something, would you be willing to extend a warranty on it beyond 13 years?

http://imgsrv.worldstart.com/images/ct-images/2013/08/xpinfection.jpg

Especially when you have people actively working to sabotage your product every day. What you need to do in order to support that product changes on a daily basis. This is also a product that you stopped selling 6 years ago. So you aren't bringing in much revenue for it. XP has proven to have a lot of security vulnerabilities with a virus infection rate more than double that of Windows 7 systems, so keeping it safe is a whole lot of work.

And supporting this product won't lead to new purchases of software or hardware since the users are people who are pretty much content with what they have.

Your answer might be yes, but Microsoft's is a definite "no."

Well, guess who's part of "everyone"? Thieves.

Credit cards and debit cards can be scanned by all sorts of devices.

Heck, there's even new electronics you can attach to your phone to let you process a credit card payment anywhere you are, right on your smartphone!

You better believe it that thieves know how this stuff works.

According to recent articles, using nothing more than the same tools a payment processor uses, thieves could potentially make a tool to scan your card in the time it takes them to walk past you on the street!

Even an ordinary laptop can utilize radio waves to copy and clone cards - that's a scary thought!

Do YOU know what kind of information your credit card has stored in it?

But guess what?

Protecting yourself is just as easy!

This RFID-resistant credit card holder encases your cards and prevents anyone from just walking by and causing you to be a victim of "wireless identity theft" (look it up, it's real!)

Whatever color you get, it'll look great! Just check 'em out!

And honestly, it's just a great way to protect your cards, too!

If you've ever had a credit card break or get damaged, you know why that's important! You're stuck having to call and inform them to cancel it, that you need a replacement, and then you have to wait WEEKS just to get the new card!

Some of us rely on those debit cards so we don't have to walk around with all our cash 24/7!

Computers 101

Jack in Duluth, Georgia writes:

I will soon be purchasing a copy of Office 2013 (including MS Access) for a PC I am building. I've seen ads for $25 (keycard), for $120 (box), and at the MS site for $399.99. I obviously don't understand what they are talking about because there seems to be a big difference between $25 and $400 for the same piece of software. How do I make sure I am getting the software I want but at a competitive price?

A key card means you are purchasing the 25 digit code to activate either a version of Office installed on a computer or that you download. That $25 price may be an offer made in conjunction with purchasing a new computer that would allow you to unlock the program for $25. Otherwise that sounds incredibly low and pretty suspicious. That $399 price point for Office Professional 2013 with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher and Access is the suggested retail price for a licensed version the products you want. Usually you won't see too much wiggle room on this price, though some good discounts are available fro time to time. Just make sure you're buying from a legitimate vendor. You don't want to end up with a product that won't activate.

The $399 price is for a 1 PC/ 1 user license.

Another option for your new PC is a subscription to Microsoft Office 365. This includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access and Publisher. It costs $9.99 per month or $99 a year. But you use the service on up to five devices in your household.

The disadvantage is that you have to keep paying the subscription, the advantage is that you'll always have the latest version of the service and the convenience of multiple devices. An Office 365 subscription will work with PCs, Macs and even on your Android device.

I have the Office 365 subscription on multiple devices and I have been quite satisfied with it.

From The Archives

Mary from Phoenix, AZ writes:

Help, when my husband was signing into our email account, he accidentally put the password along with the email address. So when I go and sign in a box comes up with the email address and password, how do I delete this, or do we need to make up another new password?

To delete it once, you simply need to highlight the text, hit delete and then enter the correct information. But to keep the wrong password from popping up every time, you need to stop your browser from remembering the incorrect information. If the log-in field offers you the option of remembering your password, make sure to un-check it, because that might just solve your problem. You don't say which browser you're using, I'm giving the instructions for Internet Explorer and the process would be similar for Firefox.

You start out with the familiar settings menu and choose Internet Options

Choose the Content tab and then in AutoComplete select Settings.

Replace XP With Linux Ubuntu: Part 3

With the end of support for Windows XP just a few weeks away, many of you are looking for alternatives that don't involve spending hundreds of dollars on a new operating system or perhaps thousands on a new computer. For many of you, the free Linux Ubuntu operating system could be just the ticket. In this article, we discussed the advantages of Ubutnu.

In part one of this article we showed you how to download Ubuntu for free and in part 2, we began the installation process. Now, we will finish up that process.

We have already backed up your XP files, burned an ISO DVD or made a bootable USB drive, download Ubuntu and selected the option to replace Windows XP with Linux Ubuntu.

Now, you will start the installation. Select the drive where you want to install Ubuntu. Click on "Install Now" button to start.

Note: Generally Windows XP files are installed on local drive C. So to remove the existing one and install fresh Ubuntu, select the drive where you have your existing XP files.

Choosing your location is next. If you are connected with Internet, then it will be selected automatically. If not, then you have to manually select your current location.

Press "Continue" after successfully selecting your location.

Next comes selecting your preferred keyboard layout. You can manually select from various layouts provided by default, or also you can use "detect keyboard layout" for Ubuntu to help you select your desired keyboard layout. Click on "Continue" after completing this step.

Next comes you user account info...

Chordify

Chordify is an awesome site! It transforms music from YouTube, SoundCloud or your private collection and converts it into chords. that you can play along with on a guitar, ukulele, or piano. It's a freemium service – meaning that there is a free level and a premium (paid for) level.

The free version includes 3 songs in music storage, maximum song duration of 10 minutes, maximum file size of 10 MB, and .PDFs of the chord diagrams. To compare that to the Premium, check out this link.

When you arrive you'll notice there is a navigation strip along the top of the page with the options: Home, Library, More, Create Account, Login, and then social media buttons. In the center of the page you'll find the field were you can either upload a song from your collection (you'll need to create an account to do so) or the field below it where you can paste in a URL to the song you want to convert.

To create a free account, click Create Account at the top of the page and then fill out the form with your name, a working e-mail address, and create a password. Then click the Create Account button on the form. You'll be automatically signed in.

I put in the YouTube link for my favorite song at the moment, Noosa's "Walk on By", and it generated this page. When I press play it starts the song, and the chord field also starts playing. The free version allows you to play, pause, download, and get diagrams on how to play the chords.

I think this is a pretty cool way to experience your favorite songs if you play the guitar, ukulele, or piano. Check it out today!

One More Big Deal

You Can't See Anything In This Weather!

Windshield Wipers Can't Do The Job Alone!

Repel-It Windshield Treatment Clears Things Up!

Convenient Wipe Lasts For Up To Six Months! No Streaking!

Car Dealers Charge Outrageous Prices For This Treatment

We've Got It For Under $5 !

You know how it is, you're driving in the rain and it looks like someone is throwing buckets of water right onto your windshield. Your windshield wipers are doing the best they can, but you still can't see a thing. IT IS DANGEROUS!

And it's not like those wipers are falling apart, you just bought them. And if you're out driving on the highway with big trucks throwing water back at you, it can be pretty darn scary.

The solutions is Repel-It Windshield Treatment. It makes your windshield hydrophobic. That means water (and the grime and gunk that can splash up on your windshield with it) will bead up and make it much easier for your windshield wipers to swoop it away.

It's not just rain that will stay away... Dust and bugs are much easier to clean off.

EVEN SNOW AND ICE will be easier to take off.

Where I live, there's a saying. If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes. We get it all. Rain, snow, ice, sleet... We'll go from 70 degrees and rain on Wednesday to 20 degrees and snow on Friday. And let me tell you, I end up doing a lot of driving not matter what the weather is like. This treatment is absolutely perfect.

Look at the difference it makes!

TREATED UNTREATED

You could have it done at your car dealer, but look what they charge you! I grabbed this shot from an actual car dealer's website. the price starts at $29.95 and you know how they love to tack on extras.

Repel-It Windshield Treatment is only $4.97 !

This durable treatment can last for up to six months! Plus it's a wipe, so it's super easy and convenient to apply to your windshield.

Not only will this improve your vision, your wipers will last longer because they'll have a lot less work to do.

There's no bottles or applicators to fuss with! Just open the convenient package and apply the treatment with the disposable wipe for streak-free protection!

We managed to get a special deal on these, so we've got a limited quantity and at $4.97 , they won't last long.

And if your order is over $5, you get FREE US Shipping!

So click the store link below and get yours now!

This was captured in the last hour of Polar Bear photography we had up near Churchill Canada. We had spotted this guy while he slumbered in a snow drift and we were lucky all the way around. After all, it's not every day you see a guy with three extra legs (tripod) and a huge extra eye (camera / lens). I could see... (More)
