Quick Tip

Helen from Morrisville, PA writes:

Is there any possible way to get information from an old 3 1/2″ disk?

It's possible. You'd need to purchase an external floppy drive that's compatible with your computer.

Your disk will also still need to be in good enough shape to be read, which can be an issue, since they have a limited life span.

The other challenge is that the data you wish to retrieve must be in a format that's readable by your current system. For basic text and image files like jpg or tiff, you should be fine. But if the information was saved in a format that's proprietary to a particular program, you may have an issue. If you only have one disk that from which you need to retrieve data, you might consider checking with a computer store to see if they offer that service. They may be able to retrieve your data for you for a fee.

Good luck!

Computers 101

Gerald writes:
I installed Ubuntu on a desktop computer with little trouble, I'm using Win XP on the same computer 90% of the time. If it would run more XP programs I'd continue using it instead of XP. I guess I do have a question, where can the program Wine which you mentioned be obtained. It may be all that I need to make better use of Ubuntu.

Folks who have changed their operating system from Windows to the Linux platform are probably missing some of the Windows applications and games that were important to them. Although Linux provides an ample amount of applications that substitute almost all Windows software, it's still quite hard to overlook some of Windows games and applications that were used and enjoyed on a regular basis by a long-term Windows users. Fortunately, Linux has invented a simple solution for it, Wine.

Wine is a free and open-source software application that allows applications designed for Microsoft Windows to run on Linux operating systems. It can be also termed as a translation layer capable of running Windows applications.

Advantages of using Wine

Wine comes with some advantages and benefits such as:

  • Using Wine enables you to take advantage of Unix strong points such as stability, flexibility and remote administration, while using your favorite Windows application.

  • Wine makes it possible to call Windows application from scripts which fall under Unix's features.

  • Wine lets you connect Windows application remotely.

  • Wine is an open source software and thus you can customize its features according to your needs.

How to install Wine on Ubuntu

While searching for instruction of installing wine application over the Web, you'd find a lot of complicated guides that features installing Wine through Ubuntu terminal, that can be quite hard to understand and implement for a not-so-savvy computer user. So lets try the simplest of all Wine installation:

  1. Go to https://apps.ubuntu.com through your browser or open up "Software-center" from applications.

  2. Search for 'Wine" through the search Bar.

  3. Find "Microsfoft Windows Compatibility Layer"

  4. Click on install and you are done.

Four easy steps and you have Wine installed on your Ubuntu. Wine has two versions, stable and beta. Stable version are highly tested ones. On the other hand, beta versions are used to run newer applications but are tested less so you might experience some issues with beta version. Some applications only work on the beta version, so download keep that in mind when choosing which version to use.

In part 2, we'll look at the process of running an application using Wine.

On The Move

Robert from Mississippi writes:

Like to know if I buy a 32″ or bigger TV monitor can I keep my computer speaker hookup to my computer or do I have to hook them up to TV monitor?

Robert, if you are planning on using the large screen primarily as a computer monitor, you'd be better off actually purchasing a 32″ or larger computer monitor as opposed to a TV. A monitor will give you a much better image. The difference between a TV and a monitor is that the television is set up to receive over-the-air broadcast signals and will probably have inputs that work with your cable or satellite provider and devices like game consoles and DVD players. A monitor is specifically designed to work with a computer.

Also, on a television your screen may be bigger, but the resolution may not increase. On a 32 inch TV, certain things may not look legible. Large format monitors offer more resolution and what you see on the screen will be easier to read.

From The Archives

Lucille from Ky writes: Have trouble getting my Outlook.com address book. I mean the whole thing. When I want to forward something, it just shows a few.

I've had quite a few questions about getting to your full Outlook.com address book. Here's how to do it.

When you go to send, forward or reply to an e-mail, many people complain they can't see the complete address list.

Click on To in order to see a list of contacts. Click once to see your favorite contacts (most often used) and double-click to see your full list of contacts.

A step you can take to make it easier to find people you've communicated with, but who aren't necessarily contacts, is to click on the little gear symbol to the right and choose More Mail Settings from the drop-down menu.

Panning With A Digital Camera

You have umpteen photographs from wildlife and motorsports photography enthusiasts. The ones where the subject (in this case, a car or a bird) is beautifully in focus while the background is all blurred to convey motion. Now compare that to the same picture where everything is in focus. That's too drab, you might say. Here is where 'panning' comes into the picture. It's the art of trailing your subject with your camera's lens and shooting him just before or in the middle of action. Like a car in motion or a bird in flight. Here are ways to capture motion in photography, the 'panning' way. And you don't even have to be a professional to be an expert at that. Happy panning!

image

Definition first

Panning is the horizontal movement of a camera as it scans a moving subject. To accomplish that, you have to switch your camera's focus settings to 'continuous' shooting mode. This will ensure your lens is constantly focusing on a moving subject, so you can click anytime you want and still get a subject in focus while the background blurs, like the subject has moved from one place to another at lightning speed. While keeping the shutter half pressed, you follow your subject horizontally for a small distance before pressing it fully and capture the motion in the image.

image

Two ways to do it

Just as there are two sides to the coin, there are two sides to panning. And here is where you can be creative.

Pattern Review

I've been debating buying a sewing machine and learning to sew. Like I need another expensive hobby or have time for one, but the desire is still there. It's born mostly out of a desire to make cute project bags to carry my knitting around, and the thought that maybe it would be easier to make clothes that fit properly than find them in the store.

So, my sister recommended I check out this site, because you can find reviews of patterns there. They also have a huge sewing knowledge database, and offer a free class when you join. I told her I'd check it out, and when I did decided it was an interesting resource to share with all of you.

The first thing I checked out were the sewing machine reviews, as that will be the first large investment I'd make in this hobby. I'm definitely looking for something computerized (I feel like I get along well with computers, so surely I'll be more successful with a computerized machine than one that isn't) but I don't want to buy too much machine for a beginner.

What I like about navigation for this site is that you can basically get at anything you are looking for from the featured content sections on the main page. Looking for a specific pattern review? Try the search field beneath the text field to register for the newsletter and press go!

If you sew or know someone who does check out this site and then pass it along!

That means if you set it up in your bathroom, hallway or kitchen - ANYWHERE - it's gonna turn on right when you need it!

It's not going to flip on some blazing light that blinds you and wakes up the dog, the kids and your spouse.

And you won't waste energy keeping it turned on when it's not in use. I mean, we all need night lights for safety's sake, but who wants to pay for electricity you aren't using?

Not with the price of utilities these days. I don't know about you, but we had a horrible winter where I am and I don't want to spend a penny more on utilities than I need to.

Carter Shield's Cabin & Dogwood

This is Carter Shield's Cabin in the Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove area. I snagged this shot one spring evening when I was out looking for bear. I drove by and just couldn't resist the dogwood tree blooming with the cabin. Even though it was starting to get late, I parked and ran back for the shot. I shot from…(More)

Miner's Beach Starburst Sunset

We went down to Miner's Beach for a sunset shot and as we got to the beach, we noticed another photographer setup. So, we went around the corner trying to decide just where to shoot (he was there first and we wanted to stay out of his shot). So we found this cool little area and weren't 100% sure about it. We were about to leave and head back towards the beach when...(More)

I had been driving back and forth through the valley, not really seeing anything of interest, and decided to "settle" on a male and female pronghorn that were, for the moment, just lying around in the sagebrush. So, with nothing better to do, I... (More)
