Cheri from Ohio writes: My question is about this cloud that all the computer systems seem to be going to. I know nothing really about 'the cloud' but I do know it's like a server system that all your stuff goes to but where is this cloud really located at? Here in the US or some foreign country. I don't trust it and would like to know more about it.
As we explained in our Cloud 101 Special Report: The cloud refers to the network of computer servers that store, process and share information for a computer program or service. It's not much different from the old-style computer mainframes that used to take up huge spaces. But these servers are connected to the Internet and each other and have the ability to sync information between all connected users. Those servers could be down the street or in another country. The complexes that host these servers are called server farms. Google spent $1.1 billion to build a 57-acre complex in Council Bluffs, Iowa and Apple has a huge data center in North Carolina. It's estimated that there are millions of server farms worldwide. Ali Mohammed from Qatar writes: Hi guys I have Windows 8 & I want to change my Windows startup sound. I want to put my own voice. I tried but it not possible for me. Thanks. Hello Ali. This requires an edit to the Windows 8 registry settings. If you don't feel particularly confident in your computer skills, I wouldn't suggest doing it. But if you feel comfortable, here's what to do. Just make sure that you are very careful. Press the windows key + r, and type regedit in the box that comes up.
Navigate to the following folder: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\EventLabels. You should see lots of folders, but when you scroll down, you will see one for WindowsLogon. Click on it, and in the panel on the right, double click on ExcludeFromCPL, and change the value to 0.
You can do the same thing in the Registry Editor for the WindowsLogoff, WindowsUnlock, and SystemExit sounds, just change the ExcludeFromCPL value to 0, if you would like to change those sounds. Close out of the Registry Editor. Now, open your Control Panel, click on Hardware and Sound, look under the Sound link (has a speaker by it) and click on Change System Sounds, and then make sure you are in the Sounds tab at the top of the window. Scroll down and you should have the option to change Windows Logon sound.
Assuming you have the voice file saved on your computer, click on Browse.. and navigate to wherever you have the file you would like to use saved. That should allow you to use whatever sound you would like as your Windows Logon sound. ~Audra Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Samantha from New Straitsville, Ohio writes: I've been reading your articles along with questions and responses about what will happen to Windows XP in April. For those who are having a difficult time letting go of XP, I wanted to write with my experience. I just recently switched from XP to Windows 7. I will grant you, I really didn't want to. I had been using XP for almost 10 years and was quite comfortable with it. In face, it's the only system I've ever known. I'm 65 and not all that tech savvy so switching was a little scary for me. Well, ladies and gentlemen, I'm here to tell you, "It ain't that bad!" The similarities outweigh the differences. It's still easy to use. It sill has a start button (which helps making the change so much easier.) I admit, I miss the look of XP, but it's really not the nightmare I thought i would be. So, if an old gal with meager tech skills can make the switch, I know the rest of you can! Samantha, you're wrong in saying that you have meager tech skills and that you aren't tech savvy. The most important tech skill of all is being open to learning new things and not being afraid of them. Computer operating systems are much like your TV or your car, you don't need a great technical understanding of how they work to operate them, you just have to figure out which buttons to push and in what order.
Tech savvy people are those who know that times and tech change and that you have to always be willing to learn and never be afraid of new technology. Let me tell you, I've never awakened in the morning and said, "I hope they change out all of our operating systems at work and I have to learn all-new programs." Want more? Sylvia from NY, NY writes "I used a 512 MB flash drive awhile ago to back up my computer. Since then, there is more to back up so how do I know how full that flashdrive is and how does it know to start backing up from where it left off before? I'm an 83 yr old lady and not too technical. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks." Hi, Sylvia. First off, congratulations on even knowing terms like "flash drive" and "backup". So many people that I know who are my age or older (I'm pushing 50 up the hill) use their age as an excuse not to be technologically literate. I have to tell you that you are MUCH more technical than a lot of other people your age. The great Douglas Adams, technophile, humorist and environmentalist once said "Anything invented before you're born is a part of nature. Anything invented between the time that you're born and the time that you're thirty is an amazing technological advancement and you'll probably have a career in it. Anything invented after you're thirty is obviously the work of the devil." Bravo to you for not using your age as an excuse to fall into that trap. On to your question. For the first part, how do you know if your flash drive is full, is fairly easy. The hard way the way that you DON'T want to find out if your hard drive is full, is that you get an error that looks something like this:
The easy way is to look at your drive. In order to do this, you first click... Go to WorldStart for the rest of this helpful tip!
Bill writes: I have installed Ubuntu on my XP netbook. However, I didn't go through the elaborate steps in your two-part tutorial. I just downloaded the Ubuntu installer using Windows. I now have a dual-boot set up when I turn on the computer, I have a choice of booting XP or Ubuntu. Did I miss out on anything by not using your approach? Many readers are wondering if, after they install Linux Ubuntu, if they can still keep XP on the computer. You can run a dual boot with both operating systems. However, you will still leave yourself open to the same security risks if you leave XP open to the Internet.
You could, however, set it up so you disable your network card when using XP, if you only want to use XP for programs and games that you can use offline. That way, when you want to use those programs you just reboot into XP and start to work. Here's how you can disable your network card. First, go to the Start menu and click on Control Panel. Americans Have Less Energy Than Ever This infographic came up in my Stumble Upon Feed and I thought it was cool enough to share with all of you. You'll need to click the image to make it appear full size, or at least I had to in Chrome. It looks at the possible reasons Americans have less energy than ever, but I think that some of these things (like technology use) apply all over the world. It would also be interesting to see world statistics on these categories. First up is that people are Working More Than Ever, which provides statistics on how much people are working, stress levels, and chronic fatigue. Next is Spending Time Online. I'm 100% guilty of this. While my roommate is out of town, I've been away from the internet trying to catch up on some school work while listening to The Graham Norton Show in the background and it feels really odd not to be plunked in front of my computer. Or the panic attack I had when my Windows decided to give me a blue screen of death and I couldn't get it to repair itself even with the disk. I solved the problem by upgrading to Windows 8.1 but it was nerve wracking not to know if I was going to be able to get the computer back up and running. This section looks at time online, social media, and even offers global statistics. After that you'll explore how Connectedness Affects Relationships and after that How Being Healthy is Hard. Both of which look at how our being connected online and sat in front of computer are affecting our health and relationships outside of the internet. I just thought it was a neat look into being online.
