Robert writes: My printer won't work with Windows 8.1. Well Robert, neither will mine and I found that out at the most inconvenient time possible, when I needed to print something off and deliver it signed somewhere that very day. Here's what I did to take care of the issue. You can head on over to the Windows 8.1 compatibility center and search your printer by model number. Lucky for me, mine was compatible.
Then it was time to head over to the HP site and find the driver and select my operating system, then download and install.
If it turns out that your printer isn't compatible with Windows 8.1, unfortunately it may be time for a new printer. But first, make sure to check with support for your printer's manufacturer because new drivers may be available. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Jim from Florida writes: Since only Microsoft has the knowledge to correct the problems in XP, and since Microsoft is the one withdrawing the support for XP, why doesn't Microsoft provide that knowledge to the security companies so that they can correct those problems that Microsoft previously corrected? Microsoft too selfish and greedy? I don't know that keeping proprietary information about your business a secret is necessarily selfish or greedy. The company invented and developed Windows and makes their money running it. If they were to share that information with multiple security companies and authorize them to use it, that information would get around. There is plenty of open-source software out here, Windows is not one of them. You won't see Apple sharing that kind of information either. They don't even allow other companies to make devices that run their operating system.
If KFC stopped offering a spicy chicken, they still wouldn't give out the recipe. But here's the thing, even Microsoft were to share that information, it is actually unlikely that any of these companies would put a team of security professionals in place researching and developing security patches for a 13-year-old operating system that has a lot of security vulnerabilities. That would cost millions and millions of dollars and you would imagine that each security company would want their own team of professionals on it. Up to this point, these companies received that information for free from Microsoft. They would not only have to research new threats, but come up with programming solutions to permanently patch them. That's a whole lot of effort and that expense would be passed on to the consumer. The cost of security software could jump up prohibitively.
With the diminishing market share for XP, that's not going to make a lot of financial sense. And security companies make security software for the same reason that Microsoft makes an operating system, they want to make money. If you'd prefer an open-source operating system, you could always check out the many flavors of Linux. Because most of your other choices for operating systems from Microsoft to Apple to Google are in it for the money, are proprietary about their knowledge and can upgrade it or pull any kind of support for it whenever they choose. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Facebook Buys WhatsApp We've told you about WhatsApp an application that allows you message friends around the world before. With the 99 cent app you can send texts, pictures or videos to anyone with the app installed on their smartphone. You can send those message without paying the standard rates for a text messaging plan. The service is very popular with 450 million users around the world and Facebook wants in on the action, shelling out $16 billion dollars for the five-year-old company.
The move is seen as Facebook's attempt to get in on the real-time messaging market. That's when messages show up and are answered in pretty close to real time on your phone like a the. Facebook is paying $16 billion dollars for WhatsApp. Now you can chat on Facebook, either in the Facebook App or by using Facebook messenger. But the company has noticed that people tend to treat Facebook messages more like e-mails and reply to them later during time they've set aside for checking their social media. What is Bluetooth? What is it used for? Answer: When looking at specifications for computers, phones and tablets you may see the word Bluetooth but what does it refer to? What is it used for?
Bluetooth is a wireless communication standard built in to many electronics, which allows you to connect peripherals like headsets, keyboards, mice and speakers. Bluetooth is popular because it requires very little device power and requires no special adapters outside of the Bluetooth chip built into the devices. The principal downside of Bluetooth is that it only works over short range. The range is 30 feet at maximum, though in most situations you can expect a reliable working distance of about 10 feet.
The primary use of Bluetooth is to... Just click WorldStart to find out more!
Recover Deleted Files With PhotoRec If you've accidentally deleted a file, formatted a disk or your hard drive crashed, you may think your files are gone forever. PhotoRec is a free application that searches your media (hard drive, SD card, CD, USB drive, etc.) for any recoverable files. It searches for numerous file types including photos, video, audio and documents. As long as you can still connect the media to a working computer, you can use PhotoRec.
When files are deleted, they are still stored on your hard drive or other media. They aren't completely removed until another file is written over them. The moment you realize a file is missing, you should stop using the drive to increase your chances of recovering your files. PhotoRec even uses read-only access when scanning for files and stores recovered files to a different location. Getting Started Connect the media you want to recover files from now. This must be connected before starting PhotoRec. Download the latest version of PhotoRec for your operating system. Do not download the Beta versions. Please note that PhotoRec is bundled with TestDisk which can used to analyze disk partitions. You won't need to use this software for recovery, but the two programs will download together. You don't need to install anything. Locate the downloaded file... Head on over to WorldStart to learn more! Mary Ann's Marvelous Menu I love recipes sites. And I don't know if you could tell, but I must have been very hungry when I was researching sites to write up lately with the influx of recipe sites. I like this site because it features a menu of recipes that can get you through a lot of different occasions. Need something to take a to brunch? What about a potluck? Or even a barbecue? Well you'll find plenty that fit the bill here. When you arrive at the site, all you have to do is scroll down the page and click on the recipe you want to check out. They're organized into categories like Appetizers, Special Sauces, Classy Breakfast and Brunch, Accompaniments, Salads, Entrees, and Desserts. I like that there is a such a variety, and that a sauce section is included. It seems like sauce sections get left out a lot. I also really want to try the Easy Crescent Reuben Roll-ups. That looks like a really delicious way to enjoy a Reuben sandwich.
