Shayne from Elkhart writes: Question, I've got an older XP laptop that I've been using to convert VHS tapes to digital. I've got tons of them and I've also been doing it for my friends and family. The gadget that plugs into my VCR and coverts the stuff, won't work on my new Windows 8 computer. What I want to know, is would it be safe to just keep my old computer for making these files and burning them to DVDs or sticking them on an external hard drive to move to other computers? If I keep the old computer offline, should everything be copasetic?
First of all, Shayne. Thank you for saying copasetic I love that word. Secondly, that's an excellent use for your XP machine. So the answer is like, totally copasetic. Since the only new data it is receiving are those converted VHS files, you should be fine. I'd also suggest taking as many other programs off your XP machine as you can manage in order to make sure it is devoting its full attention to the video conversion process. That may speed things up. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Greg from Jupiter, Florida writes: If I was to download Linux, will my files in Microsoft still open without having Microsoft windows? With the end of Windows XP, many people are thinking about switching to the Linux Ubuntu operating system. You can find programs similar to most Windows applications to run on Ubuntu, but many people still miss there favorite Windows programs. But there is a way around that. In part 1 of this series, we showed you how to download and install Wine, a program that will enable you run many Windows programs on Linux Ubuntu. In part 2, we'll show you how to run an application using Wine. If you haven't read part 1 yet, go back and learn how to install Wine on Ubuntu. As soon as you installed wine successfully, you will be able to run Windows applications with .exe or .msi extensions. Simply go to the Windows application you have installed on your computer and right click on it to see some options. Left click on "Open With Wine Windows Program Loader" and you will be able to access the application just as you used to do with Windows.
Wine Application Compatibility Wine is still a work in progress, so each and every Windows application won't run through it. The best way to check, weather an application will work, is to search for the application in the Wine database. You can see the ratings and comments of previous users and that should give you a good idea which ones will work and which ones won't. Applications are also rated according to Wine compatibility.
Applications are also rated according to Wine compatibility. Applications that would definitely work thorough Wine are rated as "Platinum." Applications that won't run through Wine are rated as "Garbage".
Wine Utilities Wine comes with a set of utilities such as "Configure Wine", "Uninstall Wine Software" and "Winetricks". While configuring Wine you will get a lot of options such as choosing a driver, audio and graphics option and also your desired Windows version thorough which you wish to install a particular software like Windows XP, Windows 7 and etc. "Uninstall Wine Software" let's you uninstall any previously installed Windows software through Wine. Simply click on the required application from the given list and click on "Remove" option to uninstall the application. "Winetricks" helps you automate some tasks. It is sort of a guide that helps you while installing some popular Windows applications. Instructions are given for specific applications, not for all.
Wine's Virtual File System Wine uses virtual file system, but it is kept hidden. To see it, go to .wine folder through Home folder and click one View > Show Hidden Folders. Now you can see a hidden folder named "Drive_C" which contains all Wine's content. You will also find a lot of help available in the Wine forums where you can ask questions and learn from other users. ~Nelson Gomez Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Joe from Nova Scotia writes: I really like your daily news letter and find many useful tips. I may have missed an article on this but I would like to know what is the best gadget to turn your TV into a smart TV. I heard apple made one that was really good but you need an I tunes account. In previous articles, we have covered how to turn your TV into a Smart TV you can check them out here and here. But what's the best way to turn your TV into a Smart TV? That depends on your needs, what types of streaming and music services you might already be using and what type of equipment you already have on hand in your house. If you have an Xbox, Play Station or certain Blu-ray players with built-in capabilities, you already have the capability to use streaming services. And while the quantity and quality of content may vary according to device, an option where you don't need to purchase an additional device is always a great option.
AppleTV is another option, but it is part of a closed iTunes system. Now if you already have a Mac or an iPad or iPod and have purchased content in the iTunes store, this may be the best choice for you to easily access you content. Now if you have an Amazon Prime membership, you'll want to make sure to choose a device that offers access to that content. I frequently watch Amazon content on my Xbox 360. Bruce from Sydney Australia writes: XP Saga: I read somewhere recently XP users should change their browsers from Explorer to Google Chrome as it will stand by XP users for a further 12 months after April 8th 2014. Is this possible? My understanding is that Microsoft are the only ones ale to send updates and patches to protect XP users, as no one else has them. Is this just another ploy to get people onto Chrome. If it is, it's just going to give people a false sense of security. Your understanding is correct. Without the information from Microsoft the ability of anyone to protect XP is going to be limited. And news like Microsoft extending the period of time that WindowsSecurity Essentials will be given anti-malware signature updates does offer false security to those hoping against hope.
Here's the bottom line straight from Microsoft: As a result, after April 8, 2014, technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date. (If you already have Microsoft Security Essentials installed, you will continue to receive anti-malware signature updates for a limited time, but this does not mean that your PC will be secure because Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates to protect your PC.) Bullet Journal I have been so anxious this semester. It feels like things are rocketing out of control sometimes. My brain behaves like this I often turn to list-making to impose some order on the situation. I'm a natural list-maker: grocery lists, chore lists, work lists, budget lists, scattered all over the place. Well no more! I've discovered Bullet journaling and now I want to share it with all of you. I'm sure you can find tons of applications that will do list making on your favorite device, but I've often found I download them and then don't use them. I still make lists on post-it notes, and on my computer with sticky notes. I think with list-making part of the helpful part is physical making myself sit down, be still, and compose a list. I practiced with scrap paper for the end of February, while I waited for a moleskin to come from Amazon, and I found that this methodology was very helpful to me and was decreasing my anxiety by a ton. So how does it work? I think it's best if you click the link and then watch the short video that explains how a bullet journal works to get that answer. Then check out the rest of the site via the back button and Get Started or the Close and Get Started button on the video. There you will find tips about Logging and Sorting your Bullet Journal on the left side of the page. Each is succinct and most have a visual example so you can see what it would look like in your journal. I think my favorite part is going to be migrating tasks forward into the next month. I start feeling really guilty if I have tasks left undone (I often can't sleep because of it), and I feel like knowing I can migrate them forward (provided they weren't deadline specific) allows me to let go of that guilt. I've also noticed that this is a great way for me to keep track of all the things I need to do for the multitude of things I do (work, school, ga position, homework, conferences, housework, animal care, etc.) and helps me find time to do things for relaxation and enjoyment like knitting and spinning. Downtime I desperately need to be a balanced human being. I hope that this becomes a habit that I can build up and use long into the future! I even bought a cheery moleskin journal in a sunny yellow and fancy pens that won't bleed to make myself want to stick with it. Wish me luck! ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
Stop Wasting Paper Towels - Stop Wasting Your Time! You Know What's Just Foolish? Using paper towels to clean or dust your electronics! You'll use one on your computer monitor, then one on your television screen. Later on, you'll use one on your cell phone screen and to clean off your iPod. This creates a couple of HUGE problems... To start with, you're not doing your expensive electronics any favors. Paper towels are rough, and their abrasive surface can and will eventually leave little scratches on your electronics. This TOTALLY defeats the purpose - why even clean 'em, if you're just going to ruin 'em? It's also VERY WASTEFUL! It's the ANTI-DIRTY: Lint & Static Free! Some materials attract the worst - it's like dirt, dust and lint are magnetized to them. And really, they are due to the static electricity they create! All you're doing with those are wiping dust right back onto what you're trying to clean off. Talk about counter-productive! BUT NOT THIS ONE! The material is actually anti-static and will not attract lint or dust - it'll just eliminate it from your electronics for a clear, clean finish! No Soap - No Solution - No Residue! Again, inferior cloths are coated in some chemical that stays on no matter what you do. What is thIS mystery chemical? Who knows...but it couldn't be good for you, or your devices. This cloth is 100% FREE of any chemicals or solvents, so it won't leave some greasy, streaky residue. Use it once, and you'll see: it's the BEST cleaning cloth EVER! And It's REALLY Cheap!
