He's filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General, the director the NSA, the Secretary of Defense and the CIA Director. He wants nearly $60 million in damages. Gmail Will Now Automatically Display Images In the past, Gmail has always asked before displaying images in emails in order to protect users from unknown senders. But the company says thanks to improvements in the way it handles images, users will soon see all images automatically displayed in Gmail messages on computers and mobile devices. Users who don't wish to see images automatically can change their settings back to "Ask before displaying external content." Apple Users Complain About Mavericks Syncing Changes in the way contacts are synced with OS X 10.9 Mavericks have some Apples users complaining about privacy concerns. With Mavericks, there is no longer a choice to manually sync contacts between Macs and other iOS devices. Those contacts now have to be stored in the iCloud. Each time I open my computer the same thing happens. Can you show me the solution of this problem, please? Hi Nishat! Unfortunately, there is not a fix for this problem, unless you talk to your domain administrator. It sounds like the administrator has set up accounts that reset at each log in, generally called "roaming profiles". The main reason for this is for security: if someone changes something that causes problems, it would be erased as soon as that person logs off. Many businesses and schools choose to have user profiles and computers set up this way to prevent any changes that can affect the performance of the machine, especially if there are multiple users of the machine. Windows 8.1 File History: A Realtime Backup Tool One of the cool features of Windows 8.1 is File History. Once activated, it archives older versions of your files automatically. Now it's not a total system backup, but it does archive your documents, photos, music and videos. Here's how to use it. You'll need to have an external drive of some kind hooked up to your computer to do this. You could also use a flash drive. Either just start typing control panel on the Metro/Modern Screen or open the Search Charm and type control panel. Select Control Panel from the results. Then choose Save backup copies of your files with File History. Turn File History On. You can start the backup right then or you wait until later. Using Select drive, you can choose another drive as the backup destination. Exclude folders allows you leave out folders you don't wish to back up. Advanced settings will let you manage several features, including how often you you want to do the back up. You can select lengths of time ranging from every 10 minutes to daily. You can also change the size of the offline cache and determine how long you want the saved versions to be stored, ranging from forever to until space is needed. Should you ever need to restore your files, just type restore your files in the search charm and click or tap Restore your files with File History. You'll enter the name of the files you're looking to restore. You will be offered different versions of the file. Select the once you want and choose restore. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version -- Michael from Kissimmee, Florida writes: I want to read the Tech Tips Monthly newsletter, but want to print it out. The problem is, I don't want to print out a repeat of the daily tech info, only the new exclusive stuff. Printing out the whole month's info is too much to print. Michael, you're kind of defeating the idea of an eMagazine here by printing it out. But if you want a hard copy, we'll get you one. Fortunately most PDF readers will allow you to select exactly what you want to print. Here's my Tech Tips Monthly for December opened in a PDF reader. From looking at the table of contents, I know that the new articles are on pages 1 through 13. So I can click on the print icon or select print, depending on the reader I'm using. I can choose to print the entire document, only the page I'm looking at or select a range of pages. Here I've selected pages 1 through 13. I will be able to print off only the articles I want. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!

Returning Electronics The Right Way It's a sad fact of life that some items we purchase or receive as gifts, just aren't going to work. Or perhaps they won't meet our needs for other reasons. That means it's time to return them to the store or mail them back to the online retailer where you purchased it. With expensive electronics, it can be especially tricky. Most places are far more picky about $300 items than they are about accepting $10 returns. So here are some tips for getting a refund or a replacement with as little pain as possible for both you and the retailer. I've been using it on my Galaxy S4 for a few months and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed. I will admit that I don't use my phone as my primary productivity advice. I have a Surface Pro tablet that I use for running the full version of Office 365. Office 365 differs from the traditional Microsoft Office model in that you pay $99 yearly or $9.99 monthly for an Office 365 Home Premium subscription that includes Word, OneNote, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher and Access that you can use on up to five computers and five mobile devices. Office 365 for Android is a pared down version that offers, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. OneNote is available as a separate app for Android and I highly recommend it. So what does Office 365 for Android offer? You can create, edit and view both Word and Excel documents. And I have to say that both types of documents look pretty good on my phone. Here's an example of a Word document: I've found that type styles and formatting stay fairly true to the original. Tapping the pencil icon at the top will allow you to edit the document. An onscreen keyboard will appear and you can immediately start typing. Go to WorldStart to learn more! Letting Kids Play With Free Apps Could Cost You A Bundle A five-year-old British boy managed to rack up $2500 in charges in just 15 minutes playing Zombies vs. Ninja on his parents' iPad. He did it with "in app" purchases of add-ons to the "free" game. The worst part, his dad punched in the password to unlock the iPad and handed it over to the child because the little boy said the game was free. Apple refunded the money, but this is a good reminder of why it's not a good idea to just hand a mobile device over to a child and let him or her play. Most devices that use apps are tied to to a store with your account information (Google Marketplace, Amazon App Store, iTunes Store etc ) and if a child starts buying things, you'll get stuck with the charges until you can straighten it all out. A friend had the experience of handing a child a Kindle Fire to watch cartoons, but in addition to watching the free cartoons, he decided to buy a few. Check out WorldStart for more on this tip! -- John from Yuma, AZ writes: My Grandson loaned his Acer laptop to a friend and he somehow changed the password in the BIOS. I am somewhat computer savvy and have tried everything that I know, all to no avail. Acer will fix the problem for a couple of hundred dollars and the place where it was purchased (Best Buy) will not touch it even, though it was still under warranty. How can I access the BIOS and change the password or even eliminate it all together? Answer: I've got some bad news for you: it won't be simple few clicks to remove the BIOS password. You will need to remove the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS password and that requires a skilled technician or someone comfortable with disassembling laptops. The good news is that any local PC repair technician should be able to perform the surgery your laptop needs. When you contact local computer repair shops, ask what the charge will be to clear a CMOS password for an Acer laptop. Comparing quotes from a few companies is a good idea but expect to pay for roughly one hour of labor. The price should range anywhere between $40 and $100. If you feel comfortable disassembling the laptop yourself...Head on over to WorldStart to learn more! For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.

Protection That SAVES You Money?! WOW! The Only Surge Protector That Saves You From Wasting Electricity! 1080 Joules of Surge Stoppin' Power! It's Even An Outlet Multiplier! YES! Two "Always On" Outlets... ...And Two That Shut Off When Not In Use! Prevents Surge Damage & Wasted Electricity! This Is Gonna Save You A TON!
You use surge protectors, right? I certainly hope so. Whether it's your computer, your TV, your stereo system, or outlet you charge your mobile devices on... you NEED a surge protector. The LAST thing you need is for a little power surge or a lightning strike to turn your entire home into a graveyard for fried electronics. Expensive electronics turn to gigantic paperweights. Your computer goes from having all your photos, videos, and documents to having NOTHING... it's not pretty. 1080 Joules of Protection - WHOA! That's one MONSTER surge protector! Most of the time, it's recommended to have a surge protector that's at LEAST rated for 200-400 joules. When you get to the 600-joules rated ones, you're considered "well protected" THIS ONE IS RATED FOR 1080 JOULES! I think the numbers speak for themselves on this one! So, I could go on all day about the benefits of surge protection... but I'm pretty sure you get it! Your stuff is expensive, this isn't, and it protects your expensive stuff. It's a no-brainer! Plus, it turns a pair of outlets into four, so you're not just protecting stuff - you're getting yourself more outlets! But Here's Something REALLY Cool! Two of these outlets are "smart" outlets. You know how you hear about "vampire" energy drain? If you leave a charger in the outlet for anything (laptops, phones, MP3 players, etc) the charger will KEEP drawing power even after the device is fully powered! That's a waste of electricity. And that means it's a waste of money. THIS THING AUTOMATICALLY SHUTS OFF WHEN YOUR DEVICES ARE FULLY-CHARGED! Yep. The two smart outlets are capable of sensing that they don't NEED to be drawing power anymore and will turn off until they do. That makes this a PERFECT surge protector to keep nearby your computer area. Plug your normal devices in the "always on" outlets, and your chargers or other devics that you don't use all the time in the other ones. It's BRILLIANT! No surges, no wasted energy, more money in your pocket. That's not the ONLY reason this saves you big. YOUR PRICE IS ONLY $16.97 with FREE US SHIPPING! If you think this is going to sell out fast, you're right! So get to the store quick! http://store.worldstart.com/product/9316 PS - $24.97 is what these go up to Saturday!!
