Microsoft Names New CEO

Microsoft has named the new CEO. Nadella is the third CEO of Microsoft. He's been with the company since 1992 and has been running the company's enterprise and cloud divisions.

"Our industry does not respect tradition – it only respects innovation," Nadella said. "The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must move faster, focus and continue to transform. I see a big part of my job as accelerating our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly."

He replaces Steve Ballmer who has faced criticism over the less than stellar launch of Windows 8 and the company's struggles to become a player in the tablet and phone market. The company also replaced Chairman Bill Gates with John Thompson. Gates will now be known as the Founder and Technology Advisor.

XP's Share of Market Actually Grows

Even with the end of security support for Windows XP coming in April, the operating system actually managed to grow its share of the operating system market in January, adding a .25% jump in users to put XP on 29.2% of all computers around the world. XP is still on a third of all Windows PCs.

Adobe Issues Critical Flash Player Update

Adobe has issued an emergency update for Flash Player due to a vulnerability that can allow an attacker to remotely take control of a system. This vulnerability affects the program on Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems.

Microsoft has addressed the issue with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 and 11 updates. You can go here to get the latest version of Flash.

Amazon Could Hike Prime Fees To $119 Per Year

Rising fuel costs could cause Amazon to hike the price of Amazon Prime by up to $40 a year.

Right now the company charges $79 for Prime, which includes the Instant Video library, the Kindle Owners Lending Library and free two-day delivery on selected items. The Prime program has tens of millions of members, but that's translated into rising costs for the company, due to the rising cost of shipping. Users could pay closer to $120 a yer for the service, though the amount of the increase has not yet been determined.

Amazon has already raised the minimum for free shipping for non-Prime members to $35 per order.

Computers 101

Robert from Arizona writes:

A MS tech said that using a dual startup with two hard drives, one with Windows 7 and the other with Windows 8 would cause the computer to become unstable, have you had information that bears that out. Some websites say that it can be done. Thanks

Hi Robert!

I think, in most cases, a dual boot with Windows 7 and Windows 8 is possible. It would depend on the hardware and specifications on your system, but it can be done. In fact, I currently am running a dual boot system of Windows 7 and Windows 8 on my Worldstart computer right now.

There are two options to set up a dual boot computer – using two separate hard drives, or using partitioned hard drives. Windows 8 requires at least 20 GB, but I would plan on 30-50 GB in any partition or hard drive you plan to use. If you are partitioning you would need to plan on saving at least that much. You can find the process for partitioning in this article, which also discusses dual booting with Windows 7 and Windows 8 developer preview. In my case, I have a partitioned hard drive. As you can see from the image below, I have a drive C:, titled New Volume, and a drive D:, title OS. Windows 7 is on the OS partition, and Windows 8 is on the New Volume. I primarily use Windows 8.

Using two different hard drives functions in pretty much the same way. There may be a few different settings you will need to change when using two hard drives when installing. However, in either set up, when you boot up, you will get an option to choose which OS you would like to load into.

An important thing to remember when installing a dual boot system is to be certain you start with installing the older system first, then install the newer OS. The newer OS will update any files needed. If you try to go from new to old, the system may load at all, as the older system may corrupt the newer files. You should also be sure to backup any files you have before setting up the dual boot.

Finally, take note that dual boot only allows you to run one of the operating systems at a time. In order to switch to the other OS, you have to completely restart the computer and boot into the other version. If you are looking to run two operating systems simultaneously, you would want to look into virtualization.

Paint 101 - Brush & Color Selection

I can't think of many things I've written that have brought as much positive feedback as my Paint 101 tutorials. Paint often sits unnoticed and unloved on Windows computers, but it can actually be a very useful tool. So far, we've learned how to crop and re-size images and how to work with shapes.

Today we'll look at how brushes and color selection work in Paint. We'll start by opening Paint and making a new file.

The size of your canvas will either be full-screen or default to the last size you used in paint. But you can always adjust the size by choosing resize.

You can then adjust the size of the image by pixels or by percentage.

You'll find the pencil tool on the Tools menu at the top. I'll get to the other useful tools in a later article. Right now, select the pencil icon.

Choosing pencil enables you to draw freehand by clicking and dragging your mouse or, if you have a touch screen by using a stylus or your finger.

If you select the Brushes option, you can vary what those lines look like.

Choosing brush will get you this line.

There are two calligraphy brush options, that will give you lines that look similar to this.

You also have the option of Airbrush.

Oil Brush

Crayon

Marker

Art pencil

Then, finally, Water color brush.

By choosing Line size, you can adjust the thickness of the brushes.

Here's what the Marker brush looks like in various sizes.

To select a color for your brush, just click or tap on it in the palette.

Select edit colors to see additional choices and to create custom colors.

To create a custom color, either type in value or use your cursor to create a color you like. Then choose Add to custom colors.

The color will then appear in your palette.

Now go have some fun experimenting with colors and brushes!

On The Move

Robots Have Already Taken Over: Part 1

Robots are everywhere!

Most people are not aware that robots are all around us and they already control many important aspects of our everyday lives.

Here's a definition of a robot from Google:

This definition would include:

  • Traffic lights
  • Rail road crossings
  • Office printers
  • Microwave ovens
  • Motion detection cameras
  • Programmable thermostats

All these devices have one thing in common they are mechanical machines that someone programmed to complete a specific task.

Now people want to do more "stuff" and they want robots to do the heavy lifting.

Here's how to get in on this growing trend:

Robots Have Already Taken Over: Part 2

Robots are everywhere!

Most people are not aware that robots are all around us and they already control many important aspects of our everyday lives. In part one of this article, we looked at how robots have taken to the skies and can help you manufacture objects at home. Today we'll look at more ways you can take part in the robot revolution.

#3 – Build your own

The coolest trend in the robot industry is the opportunity to build your own robot.

This allows you to be a modern day Dr. Frankenstein if you will.

You can also get young people involved too here's the most popular option to get the youth interested in Robots:

LEGO Mindstorms EV3 31313

This entry level programmable robot features:

  • Wi-Fi Internet connectivity
  • USB and microsd card reader.
  • 4 motor ports, 3 interactive servo motors
  • Remote control
  • Color sensor, touch sensor, infared sensor

Then when your youth or you get more advanced you can discover what's happening in the world of Raspberry Pi robotics.

Upgrade to the Raspberry Pi Starter Kit which sells for less than $100 and then add the components that your robot needs like a Peristaltic Liquid Pump, a Raspberry PI 5MP Camera Board Module, or a BrickPi Basic Power (which is also compatible with Lego robots).

#4 – Buy one off the shelf.

When I was growing up the only robots we could buy were the useless talking dogs or baby dolls that moved and said stuff.

They were about as interesting as dirt.

Fast forward to today and the robots are actually doing important things, like chores.

One of the most popular consumer robots available now has to be the iRobot vacuum cleaner:

Hilda, A Chromebook is more of an Internet appliance than a laptop. It is designed to run web-based applications. You don't buy and install programs as you would on a traditional laptop computer. It's a Linux based system, so you can't run Windows applications or programs. Google Chrome will be your web browser. You can find apps for your Chromebook in the

Can I Play Facebook Games On A Tablet

John from Canada writes: I am looking at the Nexus 10 but would like to be able to play Facebook games Cafe World and Fairyland. Can this be done with a Nexus 10?

The Nexus 10 Tablet uses the Android operating system. To find out what games are available go to the Google Play Store at googleplay.com and search for your games by name. If there is an Android app for that game, it should show up. If not, then you're out of luck unless your game decides to develop an Android app.

Even through you may be able to play your game without issues on your computer's browser, if you attempt the same thing...

Cloud Convert

Well, I just recently confessed to you all my love for conversion sites. Well here's another, but this time it's file conversions!

At Cloud Convert you can convert anything to anything. Meaning if you want to convert documents, ebooks, audio, video, spreadsheets, images or other files that you can do it all here at this one site! I think that's super bookmark worthy!

They support over 178 different formats, to check if the format you want to convert is supported head over to the Formats page to find out.

When you're ready to convert a file it is so easy to use. Just click Select Files (or use the drop down next to that if you want to snag the file off Google Drive or Dropbox), then select the format you want it to output to, and then select how you want to receive the file once it is converted (either via E-mail, Dropbox, or Google Drive). All that's left then is to finalize it by clicking the red Start Conversion button.

It's free to sign up for an account which will net you more daily conversions, consecutive conversions, conversion time, and storage time. To do so click Sign Up at the top right of the page. You can use the registration form or you can connect via Google +, Facebook, or Twitter. I typically use the Facebook F-connect option these days.

This is an excellent site. I hope you'll bookmark it for all your future conversion needs!

Make It Right

A friend of mine brought this organization to my attention in a Facebook chat. After checking out the page, I thought that their mission – "to build safe, Cradle to Cradle inspired homes, buildings and communities for people in need" – was very noteworthy! I like the emphasis on community that this organization espouses.

When you arrive at the site, I'd recommend checking out the How We Build, Where We Work, What We've Learned, and How to Help sections first.

My first question, was what exactly did they mean by Cradle to Cradle inspired homes? Never hearing the term before I was most enthused to find it defined in the How We Build section, if you click Cradle to Cradle in the first paragraph it whisks you off to a page that explains it and offers you an embedded TED Talk on the subject.

The next place I'd suggest you check out are the navigation options near the bottom of the page: News, See, Learn, and C2C. Learn and C2C - you may have already checked out by this point. But News takes you to the blog and See whisks you away to photos from their various projects and the communities they've helped, as well as design materials and elements, and let's not forget all the volunteers.

I hope you'll check out this great non-profit organization today!
